  1. Agreed. Have that CD and I think the bonus tracks are excellent. "Do You Love Me" (´85) is one of my favourites by Timeless Legend. Melismo
  2. I´ve always been a collector of LPs. More so than 45s actually. Why? Well, quite simply because on the LP there is much more to choose from. More tracks. And I love to find that obscure deep soul ballad hidden as the last track on side A or B. I also love the cover art, which you don´t get with many 45s. More to read and look at. More details about the recording given on the LP sleeve. Whenever I find a great 45, my follow-up question will always be: "Is there an LP? I want to hear more!" If there is no LP, then my follow-up question will be: "Are there more 45s by the same artist?" So, I normally buy the 45 only if the tune I want is NOT on an LP. On the other hand I collect mainly 70´s and very early 80´s and am aware that many (most?!) people here collect 60s or early 70s stuff, i.e. from a time before the LP became an established format. 3. Here in Sweden we are quite amazed and amused by the interest shown in Sven Zetterberg´s music. We are just not used to this kind of `attention´. Reminds me of when well-established (well, in Sweden, that is) pop/soul star Eric Gadd was included on one of those soul collections featuring rare/specialist soul tunes. ATB Melismo
  4. "20 years after Soft Cell did it", was what I intended to write. Lately every time I post something - Soul Source disappears, so just when I was going to edit my mistakes the forum was down again...
  5. Yes, you´re right. Also it was even 20, not 10 years later, that Marilyn Manson introuced the song to a younger audience That song never dies it seems.
  6. Yes, the original version of "Tainted Love" was recorded by Gloria Jones, Marc Bolan´s girlfriend. Soft Cell were the ones who achieved mainstream success with the song some 15 years later. Even 10 years after Soft Cell had a hit with it, Marilyn Manson turned it into a heavy rock number and gave it renewed exposure. Ed Cobb, the composer of "Tainted Love", sadly is no longer alive, he passed in 1999. He´s best known for his contributions to the world of rock and pop, but he also composed for instance "Every Little Bit Hurts" for Brenda Holloway, a true soul classic.
  7. Gloria Jones "Tainted Love" is also included in 2-CD Rediscover The 60´s & 70´s - In The Midnight Hour, the Old Gold collection featuring 24 soul classics from 1962-76. Nice compilation for newbies, i.e. people who want an introduction to soul. Soft Cell´s version of "Tainted Love" was sampled by new R&B sensation/novelty act Rihanna on her "S.O.S.". This has resulted in new interest also for the 1965 Gloria Jones recording. If you want an mp3 of the track - pm me. Melismo
  8. Actually I think El B & T feat. Leroy Burgess - "Barely Breaking Even" is getting a UK release already next week! I also love this remix Melismo
  9. Leroy Hutson or you mean Leroy Burgess???? /Melismo
  10. For me it is more a question of liking his vocals. If you ask me to hum any of his tunes I couldn´t do that, but I like his singing style, if you know what I mean... /Melismo
  11. Gavin Christopher has penned songs for artists such as Chaka Khan ("Life Is A Dance") and Charles Jackson ("Gonna Getcha Love") and provided lead vocals on jazz/fusion/funk albums by Herbie Hancock, Jeff Lorber and Tyzik. Gavin Christopher has also put out a number of solo albums. I´ve uploaded a track from the 1988 Gavin set: "Love Don´t Get No Better Than This". Avoid the album, this is the only quality track IMO - a duet with Brenda J. Nelson, a lady who has done session work with, most notably, Will Downing. The latest I heard from Gavin Christopher was last year when he sang on Ian Martin´s album The Way on a track called "Brother". BTW, Gavin is the brother of dance music diva Shawn Christopher who did "Just Another Sleepless Night": https://www.singingfool.com/player.asp?cust...LISHEDID=877434. Avoid the above link, if you don´t like 90s dance music!!! In the next post you´ll find the modern soul cut!!! Best Melismo
  12. As has been pointed out, the Coke Escovedo track is on his LP Comin´ At Ya! which is extremely easy to find (often factory-sealed unplayed copies) and dead cheap too. More and more people seem to discover the LP, but it is still a cheapie. It keeps turning up all the time at record fairs and flee markets, at least around where I live Eon track from LP Eon on Scepter Records, 1975. But beware, the group did another self-titled LP for Ariola in 1978! The Eon LPs shouldn´t be very expensive either. I have the 3 albums mentioned in this post, so if you want more info about them feel free to ask. Ta Melismo
  13. I take it you mean your playlist in the Refosoul player?! However, I am a newie here, so I can´t really help, but I hope some else will come to your (our) rescue
  14. Well, handbags are more sophisticated than pistols 2 votes against 1. Does that make it ´68? Yes, I know it is a cheap item, but me likes it Cheers Melismo
  15. I´m at work now so don´t have access to the actual 7", but I need some info: I have a Sam Hutchins AGP 45 with "I´m Tired Of Pretending" on one side. When was this 45 released? It doesn´t say on the label. I need to know the year this came out - 196? Has it beeen reissued or can I be confident that this is the original 45? And I final question - this is Sam/Sammie Hutchins who sang with The Masqueraders, right? Cheers Melismo
  16. For me it has happened several times. I used to be a dj, which meant that I searched for uptempo danceable music, but personally, for homelistening purposes I have always preferred ballads or midtempo tunes. So many a time I bought a 7" with an uptempo A-side, but discovered an, in my opinion, far more interesting slowie tucked away on the B-side. Melismo
  17. I remember including Hot Chocolate (the UK act) and their "Call The Police" on a soul mixtape I did back in the day, and then regretting it! Quite simply because it was the only non-soul tune on the tape. But still that song has some sort of ghetto-funk feel to it I have the reissue of the LP by the US band Hot Chocolate. A nice album, the original LP is expensive, though I have come across it a few times. /Melismo
  18. Sometimes when I buy a record the year of release is not stated, and I will have to trawl the Internet in search for that info. Personally, if I were to publish a book or release a record, I would most certainly state the year of publication/release. For me that would be all natural. So how come that on many records the year is not stated? Possible reasons: 1. The record company didn´t consider it essential information. 2. Everybody buys the record new and knows what year it is when they buy it. 3. They want to make the record timeless. With no year stated the record will not be considered old unless the music sounds dated. Otherwise, if you put out a record in Dec 1972 it will appear one year old after only one month. ? Melismo
  19. Yes, by then the group had gone from being a trio (Epsilons) to a duo (Talk Of The Town) and then they stopped hiding behind group names and just became "themselves". Bunny Sigler was covering things up for a while. He recorded as a solo artist using alter egos. For contractual reasons or just for fun? /Melismo
  20. It happened to me a number of times that by mistake I bought records that I already had. To avoid this I made a list of all my records, however, it has not been updated during the last few years, so now I am taking risks again. With really expensive items, I double check. When finances are low I´m extra careful. When I buy over the Internet I take time to check. When at a record fair or in a shop, you sometimes rush into things. Find it hard to memorize the titles of records. But for LPs, I find it quite easy to remember (visualize) what the LP looks like, the cover art (only problem when there are different versions/issues of same album with alternative covers). /Melismo
  21. What about male vocal group Talk Of The Town - what was their finest moment(s)?
  22. Apart from all the artists mentioned so far (Betty Wright, Sundray Tucker, Latimore, David Hudson, Gwen McCrae...................) - I also like Smokey 007. Both his solo work and together with The Exciters. Melismo
