  1. Hi Dave! Thanks for posting the link to the show, watched it yesterday. I like the Unsung series, have watched for instance their features on Donny Hathaway and the Clark Sisters on Youtube previously, and found them very interesting. Best, Melismo
  2. Cee-Lo Green´s very talented and has a very powerful soul voice. Among his other recent top tracks are "Is It" and "You Don´t Shock Me Anymore", which were doing the rounds early summer on free legal download. You can hear them here if you wish: https://melismo.podomatic.com/entry/2010-07-01T11_52_51-07_00

    Solomon Burke Rip

Woke up this morning, switched on the computer to read my local newspaper in digiversion and saw the news about Solomon Burke´s passing. Very sad. One of the first (earliest and best) soul artists. Had the pleasure of hearing and watching him in concert a few years ago when he visited a local venue in Sweden where I live, he was sitting down throughout the whole concert, sitting down on a thrown as a King Solomon, or King of Soul. He came across as a very warm and friendly person who liked to converse with the audience and he gave us a wonderful performance featuring both old and new songs. One of his many children (or was it grandchildren) was in the band, a very energetic fellow who looked like a smaller and much more athletic version of Solomon B. An unforgettable evening. And looks like today will be a Solomon Burke day, will have to treat myself to some of the man´s best music today. Solomon Burke...R.I.P. /Melismo
  4. Hi Barry! Done some backtracking listening to your last few shows and my top favourites from the most recent show must be this four-in-a-row string of pearls: Priscilla Price - Only Yesterday Geneva label... Lamont Dozier - Why Ain't My Love Enough Sony Records...1981 DEEP SOUL CELLAR Charles Wright - Man FromThe Sky Cat label...1973 Deceptions - Of All The Hearts Brooks label... Best regards, Melismo
  5. When this guy pulls out a record he puts his thumb/fingers on the vinyl in a way that I´ve never seen a proper record collector/dealer do! Don´t want any greasy fingermarks on the record that I´m going to play. Also, his record collection can´t be worth that much if nobody is willing to pay. The value is decided in the interplay between what the seller think it´s worth and what the buyer is willing to put in, so he either has to lower his price or donate the collection if it is the preservation aspect that is most dear to him.
  6. I have this box, bought it a couple of years after it first came out and got it really cheap. As a collector I also felt the necessity to have all those albums in original format of course, although admittedly as you rightly pointed out the box contains a booklet with original artwork and sleeve notes etc. Some of my friends bought the box at around the same time, but although I´ve been to many record fairs I haven´t seen it in a long while, even been told that it´s been pretty scarce during the last 20 years, but have no reason to believe that it should be valuable? If I´m mistaken I´m sure somebody will put me right. Collectors want the original albums, and the younger and/or unititiated peeps who want to discover Bobby Womack probably would go for some CD comp/box set or even download his catalogue in digiformat. Although me and most of my friends hold his earlier work in highest esteem, there is no denying that The Poet I and II albums were two notable exceptions, they rank among the best soul albums of the 80´s, and are not included in the box. So all in all, it is a great box you have, definitely great value for money for the buyer since there´s no denying the quality of the music contained therein, the box is also probably quite scarce, but I doubt that it´s a valuable item. Hope this helps. Best, Melismo
  7. Will your new record room be on the ground floor or will it be upstairs? In my first house I had my record room on the second floor and the floor sank about one centimetre during my years in that house. I am mainly a collector of LPs (also 45s and CD) and the weight of my massive collection was too much for the floor. Also in my third home, a flat, the floor sank a bit. Currently I am redecorating and refurbishing my home, so my records are in a disarray at the moment, which is why it would be unwise of me to take a photo and post on here. But I do have a large record room crammed with LPs and CDs stored (normally in strict alphabetical order) in bookshelves and on top of those bookshelves I have boxes (all the same colour) with my 45s in them. Used to also have other music-related items in there, such as music books/magazines/videos/DVDs etc. in the same room, but had to move them due to lack of space. Once it´s time for me to restore my record room again and get it back in perfect order I´m planning on placing my old computer in there too, I don´t even need to have it connected to the Internet, just planning on having it permanently connected with my USB-turntable, since I rip lots of vinyl as I often need it in digital format too and I can save it directly to my external harddrive, which can then easily be connected to my other computer which will be connected to the Internet for me to easily share some of my tunes with fellow net-based soulies. You can cram lots of records into a room and turn it into an archive, or can can make it a bit more cosy and welcoming, buy putting up curtains, some flowers, comfortable chairs etc, it all comes down to the size of the room, the size of your record collection and whether you want to spend a lot of quality time in that room, or just go there to pick up a record and then go into another room to play it. It´s always good to have some sort of listening facilities in the record room and some headphones as not to disturb your family members or close neighbours.

  15. Fair question(s), how many haven´t followed through? Who (names please) haven´t sent out their discs yet? It´s good to know considering there may be more CD swaps ahead... Might be a good idea to send PMs to those individuals to inquire whether we can expect a disc from them or whether it´s time to finally close the swap.

  19. Top names in soul music, such as The Supremes, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, recorded jingle songs for Coca Cola back in the day. Well, later on their main rivals Pepsi hooked up with Michael Jackson...lol...
  20. True, but I seem to remember that there is one particular album which is a bit harder to find than the others and thus a tad bit more expensive. Am I right and if so what is the title of that more elusive album?
  21. Maybe not exactly what you were driving at Steve, but similar to the Budweiser example brought up by Bob in previous post: In my latest podcast (see radio/media section of the forum) third track is a brilliant modern soul dancer from Marvin Swimpson played off a `black music´ album released by hamburger chain McDonalds entitled McRhythm, consisting of demos sent to the company from various aspiring artists. Best, Melismo
  22. It won´t, here´s another post bringing the thread back up to the top of the page again. I love this group too, definitely one of the finest soul-funk groups to come out of the UK. I revisit their albums from time to time, and a special favourite for me too of course is their wonderful rendition of the "Angel" classic. I actually thought they released three albums (the first AND the last one being selftitled?!), but not 100% sure and cannot check right now because my record collection is in a bit of a disarray at the moment. Best, Melismo
  23. Thanks for the kind words mate, glad you´re enjoying the tunes . Cheers, Melismo
  24. Thanks Garv, love that "Liberation" tune too, went straight to Youtube, so listening to that clip right now as I type Thanks for the positive comments mate - much appreciated! Best, Melismo
