Absolutely georgeous area. Had a great leisurely lunch in Ribasdella and some nice sunbathing on a gorgeous deseted beach at Easter a few years ago (we were staying in the nearby Picos De Europa (Potes, Cantabria).
There was a club there called SOUL - but there idea of soul didn't quite match mine! Got a photo somewhere at home.

Great thread
Some great quotes - love Simon's initial post and love Sean's 'i bought 60's in the 60's....' post - again, showing the quality of Soul Source and all who sail in her
Not going to repeat meself, as i've mentioned this on various forums and gone into (real) print about the 'third scene' BUT surely most of the records mentioned here are candidates for that scene? Thus they must have a chance of being played in 2007!
I think maybe a 'late 80's/90's' oldies scene will come along as a '4th scene' in years to come but most of the late 70's/early 80's stuff listed here can be heard (albeit infrequently for a few of them) at '3rd scene' venues?
Just been pulling 70's & 80's LP tracks out for a CD swap (from another thread) and at least half a dozen tunes have gone into my 'must play this at The Orwell this year' pile!!!!
Just an observation.....although i'll just go get me hard hat for any sarky replies that follow
Cheers

Confuses the hell out of me.
Didn't buy any 60s in the 60s cos couldn't afford a record player so taped Mike Raven & Rosko instead (suppose it was the records I couldn't afford really - not in the volume I'd want) but to me it's all soul music. When people start getting into "two step" scene and "boogie scene" start to get really confused and the borders between house and soul. Okay there are some clear obvious ones but for example what many call jazz-funk, I'd say was just good 70s soul.
God help someone who's new to it, when it confuses an old bugger like me who's been a bit of an anorak for 40 years.
(Baz, have you changed your email).
Wow, just got Real Love Radio on and on comes Womack's That's The Way I Feel About'cha, now that is SOUL!

I'm quite amazed that it didn't chart in the UK. It was massive at the places I went when I was 14 in 69. I would have expected it to chart at least in the lower reaches but consulting Guiness, no it didn't. I suspect it sold enough but not through chart return shops.

Mods - please move if in wrong section.
It was suggested I should post up about this new double CD which came out last Monday in the States. I'm suprised no-one had already posted but can't seem to find owt about it.
Anyway it comprises one CD of ex Motown artists recording Philly songs and a CD of Philly artists recording Motown. No Jerry Butler alas - he could have been on both, and Jean Carne is classed as Philly.
Thanks to Harry on WFM who played Jean & Bunny's version of Fire & Desire last Tuesday which put me onto it - straight on the phone to Diana to find out more then a bit of surfing.
Website for the project is https://www.soulfultale.com/
or direct to https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mofsab for the CD
My copy should arrive in the next few days so I'll post up a quick review when it comes.

I would recommend both the Creme De La Creme issues (there is a vol 2) and both the You'd Better Believe It volumes. They are all mid price and you may even find them in sales. I'm fairly sure they are available on double vinyl as well. Whether I'd call them Modern Soul is open to conjecture - I would when I first bought most of their contents back in the 70s but the Togetherness sets will give you more of an insight into what is really contemporary modern (bit a of a dimmma, referring to 30 year old music as modern, "modern jazz" is even older I believe).
You might find some reviews on my site - www.soulfulhorwich.org.uk
Another thing is that you should be confident about the recording quality and licensing of the Rhino (Warner/Atlantic) issues. I'm never too sure about some labels (Kent, Expansion and Grapevine also have a reputation for ensuring everything is pukka).
Just heard it on Richard's show.
Rest in peace, Linda.
I'm terrible for not knowing people's names as I didn't grow up in the Bolton area so am a bit of a newcomer, but I'm sure I will have met her at one of the local venues over the past 10-15 years. She may well have occasionally been at the RMI - makes me sadder that I don't know.
Condolences to all her loved ones.
