  1. Mike's got copies of the book as far as I know, so all I can assume is people trying it on. Stuart
  2. According to his autobiography BW played on Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds, although according to the Elvis Sessions site it was Reggie Young. Womack also says he played on Sam Cooke's Twistin The Night Away but this is unlikely as the Valentinos had only recently met up with Cooke. The RCA studio log lists Sam's long term guitarist Clif White and veteran session man Tommy Tedesco (who played on Frank Wilson's DILY) so perhaps BW is being a little economical with the truth? Still think he's one of the greats though... Stuart
  3. Hi Tony, Dennis Coffey played on that session so I e-mailed him to see if he'd remember. His reply is below. Not conclusive, but interesting all the same! Stuart Hi Stuart. The record was probably recorded at Tera Shirma studios in Detroit. Go on www.soulfuldetroit.com and ask Ralph about it. He may remember. Bob Babbitt may also remember. It was the same guy who ran those sessions. I just don't remember his name. He was from Texas I think. Dennis
  4. Hi Tony, The Action single of 'Competition' credits William Webb and Louise Hiram if that's any help. Detroit 'nut' Keith Rylatt reckons he has a copy of Shout magazine with a full Backbeat discography which might yield more information... if he can find it. Cheers Stuart
  5. Sent you a message. Cheers Stuart
  6. Hi Harry Finally found the mag. Sorry for the wait. I've photocopied the whole mag, so let me have your address and I'll send it to you. Cheers Stuart
  7. Hello Harry Tim Ashibende produced a fanzine about Paul Kyser including an interview. I'll try and dig out my copy. Cheers Stuart
  8. I'll have to ask Keith. I have a vague recollection of Ian Levine wanting to use it for his Strange World video and not being able to get it. I'd like to see it myself too! Stuart
  9. There is Super 8 footage of the Wheel shot by Ken White, who was a member of Jimmy Powell & The 5 Dimensions. This is of the Brazenose Street club. There are more details of this in Keith Rylatt's book Central 1179. Chris Burton had no recollection of any film of the Torch when Mike Ritson and I interviewed him for The In Crowd. Cheers Stuart
  10. Carl Weathers who did You Ought To Be With Me on Mirage was a pro footballer. Jackie Wilson was a Golden Gloves boxer and didn't Joe Frazier cut a record for Motown? Stuart OOps Just noticed you've got Frazier already!

  16. It did come out on Ruby but it was a boot. I'm sure I've seen the Columbia 45 on here in the last few days. Stuart
  17. Technically speaking not a ballad, as Dave 'Baby' Cortez doesn't sing more tell a story, but "Unaddressed Letter" is worth a listen. I seem to recall John Abbey loved this and mentioned in his US imports reviews in B&S. It's on the flip of "Funky Robot" and also on the Soul Vibration LP. Both on All Platinum of course. Stuart
  18. Phil Perry was at Prestatyn a few years back. He sang two sets one in the modern room and did the Montclairs' stuff in the main hall. Great voice. Stuart
  19. Keith Rylatt (who was one of the contributors to the original fanzine) has just finished a book on Detroit's soul and R&B scene called Groovesville USA. It's being edited and designed at the moment and should be out before the end of the year. I can't say too much about it at the moment but I'll keep everybody up to speed on here. Stuart
  20. It's on the Soulscape CD 'South Side Soul Survey' which I've just reviewed for manifesto. Good version. Stuart
  21. Hi Chris, Excellent record which turns up in sales boxes and lists from time to time. Typical finger snappin' 60s Detroit soul. In the early 70s loads of copies arrived in the UK (from memory via John Anderson and Martin Koppell). I've seen it listed at anything from £75 to as low as a fiver. One of those situations where there are far more copies here than in the States. Stuart
  22. This has now sold. Cheers Stuart
  23. (Ignore the wants post!) I've a Paree copy of this for sale - it's an original bought from Martin Koppell around '73-74 and is in excellent condition having hardly been played. Pete-S let me know that he got £150 for this a few months ago, which sounds a more reasonable price than the £250 quoted in the guides. Anybody want to make an offer? Cheers Stuart
  24. This of course should be a sale not a want! Sorry Stuart
