  1. Not under the banner of Northern Soul, but to some that fly another flag..... Remember all the posts on SS, 5-8 years ago, on how to attract young blood on the scene? The answer is upon us, you either continue as always or whore your DJ arse on the crest of the wave. Remember when cupcakes were just fairy cakes?
  2. If the acetate is damaged, all future presses will have that initial damage from the stamper.
  3. Bobby Hebbs-You want to change me suffered the same fate. A rushed press? Too late to withdraw so pressed up again with better quality press, I assume.
  4. Keep the Fiat One for the dyslexics, usually goes with other words like "viynl", "mowtown" and "rythm'. Probably more lazy than dyslexia.
  5. Half an hour plonked in front of the box ready to criticise..... I couldn't, it was well put together and flowed from old footage to new. It was never going to have all the elements that everybody enjoys or remembers from the scene. Individually they are all your memoirs, no-one can portray that unless the programme is by you. On the screen we were watching the fruits of Paul Masons experience and his time in that world, he showed how the scene pulled him in, and how it still has a certain effect on his life. I, for one remember my personal fixation on finding a world of escape, knowing that others had that same wanting. Watching tonight, made me remember some early days of how the scene began for me. Well done, the youngsters are going to have a ball when the film kicks off!
  6. Wasn't too shabby, more of a journal of Pauls experience on the scene. Worth a watch for the young 'uns H
  7. I have just spent the night in York and saw a few fliers around advertising a new night, Roots. Looked a great flier with the ad stating there would be funk, boogaloo, ska etc played on the night. Back to the basics it says, from Desmond Dekker to The Specials(?) Small print even stated that you can bring you're favourite 45's and they would play them for you. That's great that collectors of quality music can get there most sought after records played for them, and the DJ will get the praise for playing your record. Sounds like they are onto a winner there. No initial outlay or knowledge needed, who the fak is running this one? Alan Sugar?
  8. For the real side ;)
  9. they do....when I've had a pint lol
  10. Methinks he doth protest too much!
  11. Orange tabard woven into suit with "45" embroidered into left lapel. Black shirt ala gestapo style, long sleeves with French Cuff and "record centre " cufflinks. And a strawberry goatie beard. Because you're worth it!
  12. It makes perfect sense to me how CT was discovered and released as genuine. Why is this made so hard on these discoveries? It was unreleased and Ady made it so. And gave a second chance to own it at a later date, albeit a reissue. Jeez!
  13. How much truth is there in the ballast story as I have heard about this on a couple of occasions. I do believe that the 60's bands had access via UK releases, and once they had mastered certain tunes the chords that they had learnt was at their disposal. Cue shifting order of those chords to bring a new song to life. Motown had a routine where if they produced a song that was a hit, the same chords were used but in a different sequence. Sometimes it worked.
  14. Never seen this or heard of it either. Galaxy one been in the collection for years, if I had seen evidence of the DAU one, I would certainly have been curious of more info.
  15. I dj'yed by default as I had already amassed a collection through my love of the music. Will always have the occasional oldie/crowdpleaser in the box if I feel the floor is needing that oomph! A dj (?) asked me for my input around a year ago.... A big tune was played out by a guest dj, storms the dancefloor with this tune. The tune is around 500 sheets to buy, but was pressed on lookalikey to satisfy demand. The resident dj buys the lookalikey to play to the knowing crowd at future gigs. Giving him praise as a dj for filling a floor or in his words (because nobody else in the area plays it) I have no qualms of parasitical plays, that has been going on since playlists were printed. Its the audacity to pull the wool over customer and fellow dj's eyes that get my goat, just to get an audience on your side for playing favoured tunes, on an ego that never has been earned. I still question to this day, why not put the money out and have the admiration of knowing you played a real one, Or do some folks just want the backslapping in an instant. Needless to say, the door didn't hit my back as I left the room. The ones that bleat on about, (which is used completely out of context and detracts from an initial meaning) "don't keep the faith, share it" are the ones that are quite happy to play anything, in any order to get crowd recognition for a wee rub of their c#ck. Walking about wi their chin sticking out sayin "am the man" Throughout 30 years on scooter/mod/ soul scene, I have listened to liars, opportunists, con men, and many other also rans, none of which have any real history in my books. They weren't around contributing in the lean years and cast the things that meant most to my way of living, to the side. In the past couple of years, they've came back cos its "in", and they know it all. Of course you do!
  16. Have sold a few things to Spain since, the name Ruiz sounds familiar though. Maybe "The Count" has the right idea lol
  17. The scene is fractured beyond repair anyway, am sure most won't lose sleep over the feature Most folks will continue doing what they like and also cherish what they know. Retro is a circus for a few scenes, not just the soul scene. And we always know that the media never "get it".
  18. Am sure as buyers/sellers we are all in the disgruntled boat. I sell/buy very little on Ebay due to all the hassle. Folks want something for nothing and will try hook, line and sinker to do just that. The last time I had a customer complaining from Spain saying the item hasn't turned up, it was only in the postal system for two days, there is no way it was gonna be instant. An email nearly every day talking about refunds etc. If I do sell on Ebay now, I include my postal costs in the price of the item, I still charge for recorded on top of that, and Ebay takes the cut from my final sale. Is there a site where I can just give stuff away to save working through the middle man? Oxfam are making a good profit out of the stuff I can't be bothered listing
  19. A message from my sister in law who is a producer in various BBC programmes, informs me of this...... THE CULTURE SHOW: NORTHERN SOUL: KEEPING THE FAITH, Presented by Paul Mason TX'D Wednesday 25th September on BBC 2 @ 10pm. Let your pals know and let me know what you think of it! Am sure it contains the footage from Nuneaton and will have footage from Elaine's film.
  20. Unpitched..... Pitched......
  21. Am in the same boat. Foreign labels that look the dogs doo daas. Where you bought the record and the memories that came with it. It's sometimes better to just leave them there lol
  22. Am guilty of a pitch Example for me is some popcorn stuff, but never till its distorted. Surely a good ear tells you that it isn't happening.
  23. If it is any kind of scale, I bought this at same time as Jay Player Love is the Answer around 2002. I had heard both played around that time.
  24. Heard the instrumental played out, both versions on the 12". Can't say I heard it until later though, well into 2000.
