I dj'yed by default as I had already amassed a collection through my love of the music. Will always have the occasional oldie/crowdpleaser in the box if I feel the floor is needing that oomph!
A dj (?) asked me for my input around a year ago....
A big tune was played out by a guest dj, storms the dancefloor with this tune. The tune is around 500 sheets to buy, but was pressed on lookalikey to satisfy demand.
The resident dj buys the lookalikey to play to the knowing crowd at future gigs. Giving him praise as a dj for filling a floor or in his words (because nobody else in the area plays it)
I have no qualms of parasitical plays, that has been going on since playlists were printed. Its the audacity to pull the wool over customer and fellow dj's eyes that get my goat, just to get an audience on your side for playing favoured tunes, on an ego that never has been earned.
I still question to this day, why not put the money out and have the admiration of knowing you played a real one, Or do some folks just want the backslapping in an instant.
Needless to say, the door didn't hit my back as I left the room.
The ones that bleat on about, (which is used completely out of context and detracts from an initial meaning) "don't keep the faith, share it" are the ones that are quite happy to play anything, in any order to get crowd recognition for a wee rub of their c#ck. Walking about wi their chin sticking out sayin "am the man"
Throughout 30 years on scooter/mod/ soul scene, I have listened to liars, opportunists, con men, and many other also rans, none of which have any real history in my books. They weren't around contributing in the lean years and cast the things that meant most to my way of living, to the side.
In the past couple of years, they've came back cos its "in", and they know it all.
Of course you do!
