Imagine this, You've got your own 2 by 2 on the floor, a splash of beer hits the back of your neck, you turn round on your heels to idley see whats going on and some dafty burns you on the elbow wi' a fag. In the past 3 years my shirt collection has dwindled due to fag burns, what posseses folk to dance with a burning ember in their hand blinding some poor swine that has the audacity to keep to their own space. It's fine if you are dancing next to me and catch my heel, a nod or a wink is suffice,but in scottish terms. "wan o' these days, ahm gonna go aff ma heid" The DJ's have got it right when the sounds stop and the fags & beer are ejected, there is a fire burning on the inside without the scars on the outside. True Chalky, and when we all spend a lot of time and money chasing the good sounds, the occasional ear-turner crops up. It is all to do with personal ear and that showed when Gene put the thread up about pre '64 soul which then turned into a sort of mix & match of tastes of the so called "cowboy" variety,lol How many times have people lifted a bundle of mixed singles to buy and they sound good on the turntable but sound terrible when the business is needed on the dancefloor. I know I have and there will always be somebody there to tell you that they wouldn't have dared to play that. There are still some great sounds to be brought to the fore on the scene and the dancefloor will always dictate what is THE sound, in that area, in that country. If i want to collect all chess catalogue because of it's history, I am hardly going to knock back Ramsey Lewis with his Jazz or Chuck Berry because of his style and RnB. It's a buyers (and listeners) market and what rocks ones boat......... H

I look at RnB as a welcome addition to the scene Yes, some sounds may be a bit of a burden to the ear but if I don't listen- I miss out. The amount of times in the early days that i shrugged a lot of good tunes because "it wasn't my bag" at the time, just to find that i missed out on a big sound that people would encompass. It is true about classing it in with Northern but try classing the so-called RnB scene today in America which probably sounds all Hip-hop to others. Good point though!!!!! Get me coat, hat AND scarf!!!

Not a great Stax fan but there were some classy sounds, just been listening to Newcomers- Keep an eye on your close friends, nice!!!

well, nuff said, I do agree with you mischief there is so much happening in the scene nowadays to really bother about what source the sound comes from unless you are dancing and feel the difference. But then again it doesn't always have to end in a slanging match about labels,cd's etc. H.

To be honest, my gripe is probably something to do with the wave of KFC and the like. If i went out to a local pub or club for a drink, i knew the type of stuff that would end up making my ears bleed would be playing and nowadays there are young in-house DJ's that throw a smidgeon of Northern and Modern into there sets. I have nothing to fear with the rare sounds as they probably won't latch on to them, but to freely download onto a blank CD and throw it off as their discovery after we have lived the life is a bit much. I am all for free movement of the scene but not if it means the fag and beer brigade, edging me off the maple-sprung. cheers Haydn.

Bit of shady ground here for some but would like to hear any info on this, let me explain.......... As a pub dj in the '80s, i was under the impression that the playing of music anywhere had to be licenced by some authority or another or you weren't allowed to play the sounds to the public, now.... While national radio stations et al are paying to play certain sounds, how do the small time dj's stand? We can all have a private party and listen to music in our own homes but is there any do's and donts about having a publicised night without the aspect of copyright rearing its head. Every day you hear that such and such plays cd's but some folks don't even have the decency to buy an original cd, it is usually a copy, bought for cheap and discarded when the sounds are "out" It just seems to me nowadays that with the advent of technology ie CD's, anyone can copy or download a tune that some DJ's have sold their skin for top notch sounds then to find that some small time downloader is playing the same sound and getting the credit for finding it, pah!!! I only think of this because our scene revolves round the"hard to find" and most of us quite rightly travel to hear a DJ's particular sound, "what's the point of going to hear it? wee Bill's got a d/load of it". I know myself that in the '80s , boots and re-issues were in abundance but being nieve, i wasn't in the position to find the good stuff. Now that i am older and hopefully wiser, i can pick and choose. I know some folks who would say that it's alright to be playing this stuff but if some DJ's are doing it and getting away with it, then i am missing out on loadsomoney. Throwaway music??????? Not my bag!!! H.

Paul, There must be thousands of those albums knockin' about too, a record shop in London had about 40 of them for sale at 50p each in '88. I bought one at the time and still see them kickin' around up here in the charity shops of Scotland!!!!!!!

My copy not too good but sounds likesomeone has pulled out the vocal to give an instrumental, any news of it?????

Yes, i remember Richard Domar, his list just went on and on. I found a lot of good sounds in there about '87/88. Volcanoe-Laws of love on Arctic,Rosey Jones-Have love will travel and the like came from Domar. Bought a few Night Owls too. I used to love phoning him outwith the hours written on his list, it was funny to hear him go apeshit when you inquired about a £1.50 reissue, you could imagine him turning all sorts of colours.
