  1. There are two possible explanations: It is simply a shorthand way of people who like their "modern" done traditional (anything that's not 60s, but no chart hits) to get together to share their perverse interest It is a trap laid by the soul police special branch divi detection unit to lure recent converts to all things rare &/or northern into displaying their ignorance of the playlists of various DJs at Wigan/Stafford/wherever "back in the day"
  2. The way I see it, there are no soul songs about the internet, so it can't be any good.

  7. Jimmy McGriff died last Saturday of multiple sclerosis. There's a great page on the man at Jimmy McGriff on Wikipedia. I thought it might be appropriate to pay tribute to him through a Hammond thread - not just Jimmy, but anyone playing in his style. He is brilliantly described on wikipedia as "a fiery blues-based organist, well-versed in gospel soul and fatback groove." So there it is: Gospel Soul Fatback Groove on a Hammond B-3 A few to start with .......
  8. Hi does anyone out there have one of these that they would be prepared to part with? Thanks Funky Si
  9. So its the orange copy of this that's the original release? I had assumed it was the red/black/white on the grounds that it "looks earlier"! Or are they Both original releases from East Coast/West Coast?

  12. Still looking for this - anyone got a spare?
  13. I think they had a bit of a spat recently - chucked a few people off for general bad behaviour - and might be being a bit careful at the moment. Fryer who runs it is motherfunk on here, so you could try contacting direct.
  14. Looks like first album Dexy's Midnight Runners if you ask me .....
  15. So there aren't actually all those collections "worth in excess of 100 grand" - its just that if you add up the book values of the records, the number you get is at least six digits long. The values could never be realised, so its pointless thinking of them in that way. Just look at the sales section on here every day and see what actually sells, or watch all those records not selling on eBay or Gemm or anywhere else. Value and asking price are two completely different things. Look at the actual size of the rare soul market (total money is spent a year on rare soul 45s - my guess is £15m a year tops worldwide - £30k a week) compared to the supposed collective values of all the records we all own (my guess - £500m based on 10,000 collections with an average value of £5k). That's why it doesn't make sense as an investment. Bloody good hobby though!
  16. To quote Sir Henry at Rawlinson End "If I had all the money I'd spent on drink .... I'd spend it on drink" You can't really put a value on the enjoyment that this wonderful music provides and has provided, but if you want to cash in on the boom in record prices, you would be best off doing it sooner rather than later - or that's what I reckon anyway. Me? Well I spend my spare money on records and I'll leave them to my kids - if they want to sell them, good luck to them, but I buy them to keep not to get rid of.
  17. I agree Moggy. I say, don't spend £100 on a record if you can't afford to spend £100 & are prepared never to see that money again. Steve Woomble's point about Hamilton Movement assumes his £1000 tune might be "only" worth £100 in a few year's time. I say it might be worth pennies or nothing if there's no collectors left. Music's not like bricks & mortar or gold - there is no intrinsic value in a lump of vinyl (well, until someone finds a way of converting it back to oil that is ...). The only value is in the perceived rarity of a record and the desire of collectors to own it - that's just the whim of a few fanatics really ...
  18. Well they ought to ask a financial adviser whether they think it's a sensible investment and be prepared for the worst then! People who bought 45s in the 60s/70s/80s did so because they were collecting as a hobby surely? The fact that their collections are now worth (on paper) perhaps 10-20 times what they originally cost provides a potential windfall (so long as everyone doesn't try to sell at the same time). This does not suddenly turn them into wise investments.
  19. If anyone seriously collects soul 45s as an investment/nest egg/pension, then they need their head examining. It's a hobby, and an expensive one, serviced by a few people who make a living from buying & selling. If everyone starts selling to "cash-in", then it will be bargain basement time IMHO.
  20. Happy New Year to all, and thanks for tolerating my taste for the funky side of the street! I'm already looking forward to all the fantastic tunes I'm going to hear for the first time in 2008 thanks to SS. May your threads be followed, may your sounds be heard, and may your calls for information lead to fascinating revelations. All the best for 2008
  21. Superfly? Surely it has to be Superfly ....
  22. Fair enough! Its the funk that gets me listening to CC, not the chance to hear the finest rare soul .... That's why I hang around on Soul Source, after all. So thanks to you & all the other regular posters on here for the fantastic tunes you have introduced me to this year.
  23. While it is of course very flattering to be mistaken for Craig Charles, he is not me. Anyway, I know there's a lot of Maconie-ites out there, but how can you support a man who has a prog-rock show as his main output on Radio? And just look at his BBC CV - Stuart Maconie BBC page If he is such a big Northern Soul fan, why doesn't he mention it? Kraftwerk???? Nick Drake???? Russ Abbott???????????? Not exactly the choicest cuts of rare Detroit soul of the mid- to late- 60s is it ..... Mind you Craig's CV doesn't exactly ooze NS credentials either I suppose .... Craig Charles BBC page. At least he didn't pack his Xmas show with Stockhausen and Steeleye Span though .... and his show from last Friday is well worth a listen - the first thing he mentions in his review of the year is what a great one it has been for Kent, and he even plays a bit of rare soul.
