  4. Ken Book value £12 each I'm afraid. Some of what I've heard on the Carnival label is kack but I really like the one you posted up. Personally I think a lot of Jamaican R&B is very under rated. Great tracks are Dolly Baby, Patricia, Jenny Lee, Mash It and Running Around (this is a take on More More Doggin by Roscoe Gordon) all by Owen Gray, I Wont Cry by Derrick Harriot, Railroad Track and Boogie In My Bones by Laurel Aitken. There's lots of good uns out there, I'll try and post a few up in the next few days - maybe not everyones taste but I'll give a few a go and see what you think.
  5. The Sugar and Dandy is Jamaican R&B, they listened to a lot of R&B from the States and tried to copy it in there own style. Some leading US R&B heros in Jamaica were Fats Domino and Rosco Gordon. The Islands style started to change in about 1963 as R&B was developing into a more soulful style in the States Jamaican producers continued with the more R&Bish sound from which they developed Ska. Probably the Ska you are thinking of Ken is a bit further down the line but early Ska is like an R&B/Ska crossover. Ska really picked up as the Island was heading towards independence and wanted to create it's own identity Listen hard and you can hear how it developed into Ska
  6. Baz, just checked JM's site and I'm mistaken I'll have to have a look in my boxes tonight as I'm sure I've got Love Brings Pain by Cookie Jackson as well somewhere

  16. Yes he's still alive at least he was when I last spoke to him It's my elder brother that's to blame, he was a 11 when I was born in 1965. He was into Motown and chart soul in the 60's and then was listening to Philly etc in the early 70's which hooked me at an early age. By the end on the 70's I was a little mod and while most of my mates were listening to Secret Affair and The Chords etc I was still listening to Motown, Stax and a bit of R&B. To be honest at that time I'd never even heard of Northern Soul, I was from East London and never knew there were such great tunes out there waiting for me to discover. Never once did I hear it mentioned. A year or so later Paul Weller started to talk about Northen Soul, so me and me mates started thinking "what's that all about then?". One of my friends Paul Curren lent me a tape of some Northern stuff and that was it, Chubby Checker - At The Discoteque was top of the record buying list
  17. My preference is Tuff Enuff, very nice good and loud Love Loving By The Pound and Look At That Girl, but I'm generally an Otis fan anyway
  18. I'm A Good Guy - The C.O.D.S I Can't Please You - Jimmy Robbins Both have everything I could look for in a tune
