Remember hearing this for the first time at Wigan and thinking 'WTF?'. Even by some of Station Rd's more bizarre plays this seemed a tad weird. I think 'Very ahead of it's time' is a good description. Fab Shuffler though'.

Ok, taking it on from the 'other' thread... So you've got a spot at 'Local Soul' next week. What 'not so tired' Oldie would you play to introduce the locals to something other than the Top 50 that's a good Dancer?. Mine. Not rare - just Quality!.....
-
There was an Old DJ from Splott... Who crashed on the way to her Spot... Her Scooter got Bashed.... Her Box of Oldie's got Trashed.... No problem, ebay will replace the lot.

No need to apologise for me Ste, although I do seem to have a habit of upsetting people of late!. The OP's Poem was having a go at DJ's who WONT just play the same old - same old. My 'poem' was having a go at the DJ's who do.

No, and have never been a DJ OR collector in the past either. I just got fookin' fed up listening to same 20 records on the hour, every hour, every week, every month, every year. Some people REALLY do need to understand that Northern Soul does not Start and End with Ruby Andrews and Moses Smith.... HONEST!.

I've made a few changes (if it doesn't offend anyone) And given it a title. GROUNDHOG DAY WHEN WE GO OUT TO A NORTHERN SOUL NIGHT, ITS NOT JUST FOR THE TUNES OF OUR YOUTH THERE'S A LOT MORE THAN 500 RECORDS , AND THAT IS THE TRUTH BUT SOME PUNTERS DONT SEEM TO KNOW, THAT IS WHAT NORTHERN SOUL IS ABOUT ITS NOT JUST A PENSIONERS DISCO, OF THAT THERE IS NO DOUBT WE DO WANT TO BE RE- EDUCATED, ABOUT THE TUNES WE'D FORGOT AND REMINDED HOW GOOD THEY WERE, AND WHY THEY WERE TOP DANCEFLOORS ARE OFTEN EMPTIED, WITH A TUNE THE DJ NEEDS TO SHARE BUT EVERY RECORD WAS NEW AT SOME POINT, SO WHY NOT BE FAIR?. DOESNT TAKE LONG TO GET THE FEEL, OF WHAT IS POPULAR IN A PLACE AND THE DANCEFLOOR WILL FILL, LEAVING HARDLY ANY SPACE ALWAYS IGNORE THE DANCERS WHO LEAVE FOR THE NEW TUNE YOU PLAY IT MEANS THEY WONT OPEN THEIR EARS, AND HAVE HAD 'THEIR' DAY HOW MANY “CAN’T DANCE DJ’S”, THINK ITS ALL ABOUT “ME” SOME PEOPLE JUST THINK THEY'RE JUKEBOXES, HOW WRONG CAN THEY BE PLAY THE TUNES THAT GET THE PUNTERS, ON THE FLOOR SO IF YOU WANT A WEDDING DISCO DJ, THEN HEAD FOR THE DOOR WITHOUT THESE DANCERS, NORTHERN SOUL WOULD NOT BE AND DONT THINK THAT THIS POEM, IS ONLY THE THOUGHTS OF ME DJ’S PROVIDE A SERVICE, ABOUT THEM IT IS NOT BUT BECAUSE THEY PLAY THE TUNES, A RESPONSIBILITY TO THE SCENE THEY ALSO HAVE GOT AND FINALLY WE DO NEED SLOWIES, AT THE END OF THE NIGHT WE ARE OLD AND FRAIL, AND WILL DANCE TO ANY OLD SHITE MOST THINK THEY CAN DANCE AFTER A FEW DRINKS, THAT IS TRUE TO SAY SO I NEED TO GET TO THE BAR, LAST ORDERS IS ON IT'S WAY!! SO KEEP THE DANCERS DANCING, ITS WHAT YOUR PAID TO DO BUT THROW SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN, WHILE THE PI55HEADS GO THE LOO WE DO SOMETIMES NEED EDUCATING, AND TELLING WHATS GOOD JUST DONT PLAY THE SAME OLD RECORDS, THAT'S WHAT YOU SHOULD..... DO

Frank Wilson Test Press Stays in Detroit - Jack White & Record Store Day News
Zed1 commented on an article in News Archives
Likewise, but for many it's more what the track represents rather than the record itself, which is hardly FW's fault. I'd think Ruby Andrews is now comfortably ahead and is easily the most overplayed track in the scene's history. There must be as yet undiscovered tribes in the Amazon rain Forrest who could recite the lyrics to 'Just Lovin' You'. -
What’s the biggest track playing out at the moment
Zed1 replied to Jazz's topic in All About the SOUL
Don't get out much these days Ste as you know, but on the odd time I do I get the overwhelming impression that to go forwards we need to go backwards and bring everything back under one roof. This would also have the added benefit of bringing about cull of the Party Northern DJ's and weekly Pensioners Disco's... Sadly, I doubt it'll happen as I think we're just too far apart and never the twain shall meet. -

I just watch with the sound down. -
One of the few occasions when price reflects quality.

I think it's Fab that there is a younger generation getting into the music but I have to be honest and say it does puzzle me a little why the 17/18 year old's of today would want to spend their evenings hanging around with a bunch of half pi55ed pensioners dressed in badly fitting fashion from 45 years ago.... no matter how good the music. I think I speak for many of us that back in the day part of the attraction was the 'Scene' itself, ie a cool underground music scene that most people didn't know even existed. Travelling to unknown towns on public transport late on Saturday nights with pockets full of tablets designed to avoid a Restful nights sleep only added to the kudos. Hair and waistlines aside, the biggest thing missing from today's scene for me is that Energy we had back then when first discovering this music. Personally I think the 'Kids' should have their own events and find their own way and anyone over 25 should be banned.

If I'd have turned up at Station Rd in 77 to be greeted by a room full of people old enough to be my Grandparents, I'd think I'd have very quickly found another genre of music to follow.

..... and this weeks winner of the 'Wigan went shit in....' competition goes to. 1st prize is a pair of 40" Spencers (2nd prize is two pairs)

Seen lots of posts from buyers complaining about high prices. Interestingly though I've never seen a seller post yet saying 'Just sold one of my collection on ebay and because it made way over what I thought it was worth I've given some of the money back'...... cant think why?.
-
And sadly Ste there are a fair few of those no longer with us.

Usual route for us on the right side of the bridge was the last bus to Warrington, hang around in the Patten Arms for an hour then jump the last train from Bank Quay to Wigan. We did (Debs & me) go on my RD250 one week and left it parked in the high Rise over the road fully expecting it to have gone the following morning.

Shamelessly nicked this podcast with many of the big sounds from 75ish just to show it wasn't all doom & gloom (hope you don't mind Pete). We all might be well used to them now, but just imagine what it must have been like hearing them for the first time......
-
This was Widnes remember - there were no Cars, and the only other local transport available had a nosebag and if he'd have nicked that no one in the town would have got their Coal.
-
In many ways I envy you, just imagine being able to listen to some of these fantastic tracks through fresh ears. I can still remember hearing Uncle Dickie playing CW for the first time in late 78.... an almost life changing experience. Enjoy the Journey.

No 'Rose tinted" here, and for many thousands of others as well, don't take one VERY bias playlist from one month in one year and come up with all the Sweeping generalisations that others have posted on here. For many of us Station Rd was the start of our Northern soul journey and despite just being referred to as 'Divvys' we were actually able to filter out the crap being played and what was left was some of the finest music ever played on the scene. Don't take my word for it, there are plenty of Northern Soul years playlists on here covering this time so instead of believing all the second hand bollocks, take a listen and I'll think you'll actually find that Wigan wasn't 'just' 8 weekly hours of "Pop music" as you put it. Also, I've been to every type of Nite in 40+ years on the scene from the VERY same old-same old to the Rarest of the rare and you'll just have to trust me on this, but they ALL play crap, even if some Willy Waving DJ tell's you his latest overpriced rare ebay purchase is total quality and the next best thing.... so arriving late really doesn't mean you've missed the Shite..... honest.

Don't need me to tell you this is a fantastic forum, the depth of knowledge about our music is truly amazing. But as soon as anyone mentions a certain Town just off the M6 in Lancashire, suddenly out come all the Scene 'experts' who are only to happy to tell me that actually my 3 years at Station Rd were in fact Crap, and It turns out I was actually a card carrying tourist Div who just turned up on a coach once a week to Shuffle about to a load of white pop crap disco tunes. in some 10+ years on this Forum I've read that Wigan 'Went Crap' in 73, 74, 75, 76, 77. 78. 79. 80 & 81. In other words it turned shite every year the place was open. Maybe if I was Born a rare soul Fan like the resident experts on here I'd have known this and not bothered making the fookin' pointless trip every week!. When I come on here and read Mel Britt described as 'Garbage' I think It's time to move on given the Chin Molesters have finally taken over the asylum. Keep Well Ste and Stay in Touch. '

Never in the Field of All-Nighters has so much Shite been written by so many without a Clue. Apologies to Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill.
