Loads & Loads Of Events
Never thought I would say this but I think there is now to much soul about........ to many venue's chasing to few punters means we have the Quantity!, but do we have the Quality??.

Tim Tam And The Turn-ons
A definate 'Marmite' sound!!.. TBH its was the same 'up Norf'.....ie, big at the youth clubs, but frowned upon at the bigger venue's.

Will Things Be Better When We Die

How Did You Get To 70's Venues
Around 10-15 of us to to get the last bus from Runcorn shopping City to Warrington, then sit in the Pattern Arms for around an hour until the the last train to Wigan from Bank Quay station. Last train allways got into Wigan around kicking out time for the local piss heads so allways ended up getting chased through the town centre to Station Rd!. It was then just a case of sitting on the Cinema steps freezing your nads off till the place opened!. Went the Baths a couple of times on the Sunday morning to kill a little time before the first train home!......... allways good for a laugh watching people still 'barbed' up from the night before trying to swim!!. Dont forget your swiming 'gear'..

This England Tune?
Interesting view!!........ 'Ungainly' in not a word I would use. Some people have said that the little guy thats on after `Mr Funk' was a better Stomper, but to me he has no rythem and just looks like Tigger on Speed.. One thing I did notice at Wigan, and in the many venue's since is that there are a lot of different dance style's depending on where in the country you are from. most of us were influanced or copied the people we went with, so perhaps what someone from one side of the country thinks is good dancing, someone from the other side thinks is crap!!..

This England Tune?
They only use the intro to 'Out of my mind' so no lyric's........ perhaps thats what confusing Neo Its the 'Harpsecord' bit I think he means (Spelling??)

This England Tune?
The first real bit showing people going in, the intro to 'Out of my Mind' (Rain) is playing,..... If thats what you mean??

Any New Books / Cd's Etc?
I think Goldmine have 'another' Compilation CD out!.......... its has the same tracks as all the others but the 'Niteowl' label now has a Digitally remastered Beak. For a decent non-soul read, and a little bit of social history I have just read a book called 'Casuals' (Phil Thornton), its about the football factories of the 70s/80s and thier fashion culture's........ interesting read!

Guess Every One's Out Tonight?
Thats what I used to say at Wigan!!!

This England Tune?
This England.. Slightly off topic...... at the end of the dancing 'outakes' bit below is a guy all in black with P-Funk on his T-Shirt, never saw anyone at, or since Wigan who could 'Stomp' like this Guy!........... is he still around??. Modern Versus Northern. An Irrelevant Debate?
Ditto!.... I think sometimes the divide is made worse by many venue's 'Safe' music policy........ There is doubtless a lot more to modern Soul than Angie Stone!, in the same way as there is a hell of a lot more to Northern soul than Frank Wilson!...

Northern Soul In The 80's (back To The Underground ? ?)
I think that goes for many of us....... well in my case anyway! Did'nt have much to do with the scene in the 80s due to kid's and mortgages etc, allthough TBH I had become a little p****d off with the scene towards the end of Wigan anyway. I have also not noticed any big influx of `young blood` but have noticed more people around our own age at venue's who were perhaps never into the Music first time round as it where, but have joined of late because its a night out with people their own age, more than a night out listening/dancing to Northern Soul!!.

In The Club (wigan Casino)
I took part in the making of the `In the Club` vid above............. The Wigan episode was part of a Series of shows about the Northern Club scene down the years, Northern being the location, not the type of Music as it was only meant to be shown in the Granada TV region.. The First was about the Cavern, the Last about Creamfields, the Middle one being about the Casino........ It was not meant to be a video about the soul scene as such, just a `Punters` point of view of going to the above Clubs. I agree with you to a point as it is just 'another` Wigan Video and if you never went, then it doubless gets a bit boring, but at least this programme asked a few `Different' people a few 'different' questions about the old place, instead of just digging up the 'Usual Suspects' in Searling, Roberts and co just to tell us all (again) how wonderfull they all were. The Casino was THE place that got me into the music, a love I still have some 30 years on, doubtless you may feel this passionate about one of your venue's, but love it or loath it, would there be anything like the `Northern' scene we have today without it??.

Long Time, No Hear
Nice one!.......... will take you up on your kind offer! Fantastic Wigan tunes that rarely, if ever see a turntable these days!
-
Is Northern Soul Killing Off Soulies?
Agreed!....... . I still want to 'Dance the Dance'.......... trouble is to many venue's music policy tells me I cant!!
-
Soul Police
As long as they are not whistling 'Haweii 5-0` otherwise they will have to arrest themselves!!
-
Soul Police
I think they were all sacked after taking Goldmine compelation CDs as bribe's..
-
Is Northern Soul Killing Off Soulies?
Likewise confused by your 'comment`........ but we all have different views on what 'you' say is Soulful........ I just happen to prefer the less produced, more uptempo 60s 'Northern' sound.......A sound to which the type of dancing this thread is about was designed for!!. I will agree with you that there is to much soul about now..... to many venue's chasing to few punters has watered the scene down to a facimile of its former self in an attempt to appeal to as many people as possible........ I also agree with you about the 'Soul Police`.......Perhaps if we had them 30 years ago this disscussion would not be taking place!!

Long Time, No Hear
A couple of tracks I have never heard at any venue's since Wigan closed its doors! 1, 'Music with Soul', The Pallbearers. 2, 'Do what you wanna do', The Michelles Downloadable would be nice!!

Is Northern Soul Killing Off Soulies?
I would say it's the other way round!..... ie 'Soulies' killing of Northern soul!. Many Venue's have now replaced the Wigan type 100mph stomper with more mid-tempo commercial sounds and 'Safe' Northern which hardly require the body of an athlete to dance to!!.. The only real chance of injuring yourself on the dancefloor these days is if you trip over a Handbag!!!
