  1. As said he does have a point but I dont think many of us will be rushing out to buy 'Mods79' on Casino Classic's!.
  2. LOL..... and a 'Hard' act to follow!!.
  3. Great Idea!... Another one could be 'The Viagra's'
  4. True Winnie but the guys you mention dont do every local Fri/Sat soul night in the Country, many of us are left with the usual 'safe' nights, so if we want to hear some of the lesser played stuff you need to go to a Niter!. Also as said the Niter crowds tend to go more for the music, not just the social scene and a late drink like many people at local nights, so they perhaps demand more 'choice' on the turntables, also jocks have a little longer on the decks to play this lesser known stuff!. I have heard stuff at Stoke for Eg that wont get played at many local nights because again it would not be deemed 'safe'....... sadly! In some ways its a bit like the 60s/70s with the 'Youth club' Soul being different to the Wigan, Torch, Wheel type soul!.
  5. If by this you mean the type of 'soul' these Niter people want to listen to, then I agree with you to a point!. You get more of a chance at niter's to hear the lesser played, more hardcore 'Soul' that does not get played at many ordinary Soul-Nites because it is not deemed 'Safe', and of course a lot less people who consider a soul nite a 'Social scene` go to niters so there is less pressure to play the 'Usual stuff'. Trouble is not everyone who wants to listen to this lesser played stuff can get to niter's, therefore to a degree missing out!
  6. Winnie. IMHO the above is a typical 'type' of playlist that many venue's seem to follow nowadays, I would agree that the one's you have highlighted are not played everywhere (With the exception of Al Wilson), BUT if the likes of WCF were played at my local venue I doubt my reaction would be "Oh here's a great under-played oldie, I'm off for a dance"......... my reaction is more likely to be "OH-NO not again", I dont think thats being unfair, its just how many times have we all heard this stuff down the years. I, like you think the 'Gone with the wind track' is a cracking piece of Northern Soul, but along with 'Stormy' (even more so) this was played out a few years ago in our area (N/W). As said I have nothing against the above tunes, its just they are nearly all the usual 'Safe' sounds that we all know only to well, remember most venue's are only monthly so again using the above playlist as an example how many months would you have to wait?, and how much 'Same old' sounds would you have to listen to before getting to some of the better stuff?. Why cant WCF, Al Wilson etc be replaced with a few 'under-played' sounds from Wigan, The Torch, The Wheel etc, etc, etc thats all I am asking!! Or am I being unresonable?.....
  7. Played out Oldies?? The link below is for 'Mary Fox's Northern Soul and Motown Show' on Radio Stoke Have a butchers at the playlists!....... it reads like a Blueprint for many 'Soul-Nites' nowadays.... https://www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/content/article...w_feature.shtml Nothing against the records (or radio station) but its just a perfect example of "played out oldies"
  8. I recall the one at the end of the 70s, early 80s, ie the old Dance floor 'shift change'.... Must have been off sick for the late 80s, early 90s one though???
  9. Without wishing to start 'another' newies v oldies arguement this is what I have noticed in recent years........... Around 4-5 years ago there were less venue's than now, but we were going to a least one, sometimes two every week. Yet today we have More choice yet we only go to around one or two a month.. It seems to me that many of these venue's try to appeal to a wide an audience as possible in order to get as many punters through the door as possible........ many newer people have been encouraged onto the scene with lots of nice 'safe' music, ie the usual New/old tracks that everyone knows only to well, it means Mr + Mrs blogs can go to a nice little soul night, Mr can have a few late drinks, while Mrs has a dance round her handbag with her mates........ AND if MR has had a few to many Stella's he get up and show us all his 'Northern' dance to 'Out on the Floor'..... Meanwhile countless 'quality' sounds, both new and old have little chance of every seeing a turntable because of this ultra 'safe' policy. Some venue's seem little more than Teen Disco's for '40 somethings' ..... There is a lot more to Northern than Frank Wilson and Sid the bloody Snake, in the same way as I imagine there is a lot more to modern than Angie Stone and Drizabone!. All of course IMHO!
  10. Never thought I would say this but I think there is now to much soul about........ to many venue's chasing to few punters means we have the Quantity!, but do we have the Quality??.
  11. A definate 'Marmite' sound!!.. TBH its was the same 'up Norf'.....ie, big at the youth clubs, but frowned upon at the bigger venue's.
  12. Proof (If it were needed) why the two scene's will never fully co-exist!.
  13. Around 10-15 of us to to get the last bus from Runcorn shopping City to Warrington, then sit in the Pattern Arms for around an hour until the the last train to Wigan from Bank Quay station. Last train allways got into Wigan around kicking out time for the local piss heads so allways ended up getting chased through the town centre to Station Rd!. It was then just a case of sitting on the Cinema steps freezing your nads off till the place opened!. Went the Baths a couple of times on the Sunday morning to kill a little time before the first train home!......... allways good for a laugh watching people still 'barbed' up from the night before trying to swim!!. Dont forget your swiming 'gear'..
  14. [quote name='Russ Vickers' date='Oct 14 2006, 08:21 PM' post='362967' wonder why this kinda dancin is out of favour, Russ
  15. Interesting view!!........ 'Ungainly' in not a word I would use. Some people have said that the little guy thats on after `Mr Funk' was a better Stomper, but to me he has no rythem and just looks like Tigger on Speed.. One thing I did notice at Wigan, and in the many venue's since is that there are a lot of different dance style's depending on where in the country you are from. most of us were influanced or copied the people we went with, so perhaps what someone from one side of the country thinks is good dancing, someone from the other side thinks is crap!!..
  16. They only use the intro to 'Out of my mind' so no lyric's........ perhaps thats what confusing Neo Its the 'Harpsecord' bit I think he means (Spelling??)
  17. The first real bit showing people going in, the intro to 'Out of my Mind' (Rain) is playing,..... If thats what you mean??
  18. I think Goldmine have 'another' Compilation CD out!.......... its has the same tracks as all the others but the 'Niteowl' label now has a Digitally remastered Beak. For a decent non-soul read, and a little bit of social history I have just read a book called 'Casuals' (Phil Thornton), its about the football factories of the 70s/80s and thier fashion culture's........ interesting read!
  19. Thats what I used to say at Wigan!!!
  20. This England.. Slightly off topic...... at the end of the dancing 'outakes' bit below is a guy all in black with P-Funk on his T-Shirt, never saw anyone at, or since Wigan who could 'Stomp' like this Guy!........... is he still around??. This England (Outakes 1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tqBPloMCw4
  21. Ditto!.... I think sometimes the divide is made worse by many venue's 'Safe' music policy........ There is doubtless a lot more to modern Soul than Angie Stone!, in the same way as there is a hell of a lot more to Northern soul than Frank Wilson!...
  22. I think that goes for many of us....... well in my case anyway! Did'nt have much to do with the scene in the 80s due to kid's and mortgages etc, allthough TBH I had become a little p****d off with the scene towards the end of Wigan anyway. I have also not noticed any big influx of `young blood` but have noticed more people around our own age at venue's who were perhaps never into the Music first time round as it where, but have joined of late because its a night out with people their own age, more than a night out listening/dancing to Northern Soul!!.
  23. I took part in the making of the `In the Club` vid above............. The Wigan episode was part of a Series of shows about the Northern Club scene down the years, Northern being the location, not the type of Music as it was only meant to be shown in the Granada TV region.. The First was about the Cavern, the Last about Creamfields, the Middle one being about the Casino........ It was not meant to be a video about the soul scene as such, just a `Punters` point of view of going to the above Clubs. I agree with you to a point as it is just 'another` Wigan Video and if you never went, then it doubless gets a bit boring, but at least this programme asked a few `Different' people a few 'different' questions about the old place, instead of just digging up the 'Usual Suspects' in Searling, Roberts and co just to tell us all (again) how wonderfull they all were. The Casino was THE place that got me into the music, a love I still have some 30 years on, doubtless you may feel this passionate about one of your venue's, but love it or loath it, would there be anything like the `Northern' scene we have today without it??.
  24. Nice one!.......... will take you up on your kind offer! Fantastic Wigan tunes that rarely, if ever see a turntable these days!
