  1. I keep reading that we need to "encourage" kids onto the scene so it can survive (strangely nobody 'encouraged' me back then - I went out and found it) yet the scene has had huge success in recent years in 'encouraging' peope to join, trouble is to get them to join (and then stay) you have to put on your typical 'Local Soul' type nite so we've just ended up going backwards. The music was and is always going to be a sub-genre with limited mass-market appeal, try to give it more appeal and you'll just be swapping a disco full of pensioners (like we have now) for a disco full of kids.....
  2. I'll admit that a full head of hair, a flat stomach and a set of 'pins' that don't look like a piece of prime Stilton makes the clothes look a tad better but why oh why does someone in their 50's feel the need to dress up like we're still living in the 3-day-week?. It's fair to say much of the scene is now little more than a retro disco for 50-somethings and that I assume people see the dressing up as part of this - trouble is we're now getting past 'Retro' and getting into the realms of parody with these ever increasingly bizarre outfits that some seem to be wearing, Looking through the galley pic's see's outfits that would have looked silly at Wigan in 1977 let alone on someone pushing pensionable age in 2012. It reminds me of someone going to a fancy dress party as Elvis, they never go dressed like him when he was a good looking 21 year old, they always do the comedy hair/sideburns thing with the big collars and sequined jump suits. Is this REALLY how we want to be seen?.....
  3. If only the same could be said for all those 'pensioners' there who feel the need to dress up in what are getting increasingly bizarre period costumes......
  4. Sadly lots of people if you look through 'The Gallery' Pic's..
  5. The King George Hall Dance Floor... The Bar scene from Star Wars....
  6. Never that keen myself back in the day but I now love it.. Bit like the track below, when this was big at Wigan I thought it was disco shite, yet now it sounds fantastic and as fresh as if it were cut yesterday....
  7. Used to adore Burning Bush and Black Power back when - 35 years have not been kind to them though IMHO... Back in 78 I bought the track below (on the very same Blue Bell) 'cos I thought it was the best Norvern track ever - cost me nearly a weeks wage at the time but I didn't care 'cos I HAD to have it.... It sounds fooking awful now!!.
  8. Black Power - James Coit. The Burning fooking Bush.
  9. I've seen loads of people who've clearly been to every venue on the scene because they've got the patches on their Adidas bags to prove it....
  10. Bet that pleased him...
  11. I dont think any of us would advocate bringing in prohibition but it is pretty clear that many nites are now little more than Teen disco's for 50 somethings with the prospect of listening to a night of Northern Soul Music not exactly being high on their reasons for attending.
  12. No..... but it's replaced THE music for many..
  13. 1: Just Loving you - Ruby Andrews 2: Just Loving You - Ruby Andrews 3: Just Loving You - Ruby Andrews The Ruby Andrews track is a new entry at number 3 with Ruby Andrews moving up from number 3 to number 2. The Ruby Andrews track 'Just Loving you' is a new entry at number 1 (replacing Ruby Andrews).
  14. ....... pass the roast beef, then!.
  15. Mary Love - Lay this burden down Vicki Baines - Country Girl CW & the Group - I don't like to lose DD Barnes - Do what you wanna do Herb Ward - Strange Change Sapphires - Slow Fizz Joe Tex - Better Believe it Baby 7 Dwarfs - Stop Girl Luther Ingram - If it's all the same......... Larry Santos - You got me.....
  16. Even if you could dance to it, would you actually want to?.....
  17. Kin'ell Barry. you've just released the playlist for our Local soul nite for the next 3 years....
  18. Fantastic track which sadly along with many others of this tempo rarely see's a set of decks these days. Most local soul nite type punters would never have heard it and even if they had wouldn't have the first clue how to dance to it!.......
  19. Pass the iron lung......
  20. Always thought the saturday after the friday oldies nighter was the best - less full but more people interested in the newer stuff.
  21. Agreed Barry..... I always enjoyed Wigan more during the 'supposed' crap years as there was always more room...
  22. Lou Pride - I'm coming home.
  23. Now't wrong with 'Old Folks' doing the gymnastics if done well - the problem is most can't and clearly NEVER could... The guy below can still give a good account of himself (6.24 in) helped me thinks by dancing to one of the finest Northern soul records ever!!..
  24. And another Wigan monster.......
  25. RIP Frank....
