Why can't the local council pay for it given they seem more than happy to advertise the town as "The Home of Northern Soul"?. Which is a little ironic given they spent most of the 70's trying the shut the place.

Your time was my time. Remember very well being stood by the dancefloor watching you stomping and wishing I could do the same. Interestingly, last year I seen one of the 'kids' doing that 'Windmill leg' thing you used to do, clearly they'd been watching the outakes as well. You should start some dance classes........ be nice to have some who actually CAN dance teaching all these newbies.

Would this even be possible given the scene's already been dumbed down to such a level it's pretty much unrecognisable from the one most of us signed up for back in the day. Northern Soul (which is what it is to me) has never had a 'wider appeal', indeed it's one of the things that attracted us in the first place. I wonder how many of us would have even bothered getting into the music back in the day if the scene had been like it is at present?....

I don't think any of us have a problem with those venue's that set out to just be your A typical 'Motown & Classic Soul' type nights aimed at the Social Crowd. The problem is many of the longer running 'Northern' nights which were never exactly 'Rare', BUT would at least try and introduce their punters to something a little different, have now been forced to abandon this policy in favour of a VERY rigid Oldies playlist for fear that their 'Handbag' contingent will just disappear off to one of the countless other venues offering the 'Same Old'... Like it or not the handbag/fancy dress scene is pretty much THE scene at present!.

Agreed it's not a secret society, but we want people to come out first and foremost for the music, which isn't always the case at many venue's...

Countless people have been encouraged to join the scene in the last 10 years or so (which is a good thing). Trouble is many have joined for the social 'Friendly' and 'Welcoming' side of things rather than the music, meaning many nights are now little more than a teen disco for 50 somethings loosely based around a few dozen Northern soul records. What comes out of the speakers should be welcoming enough.....

If anything I'd say the scene has been TOO welcoming in recent years, These days it seems more about the social side than the music.
