  2. Remember finding my Claytown promo in Rob Smiths shop for £6, maybe 15-20 years ago. An accidental find, of course; you cant be too specific in Robs.
  3. From the Post by Brigid dated 29th November 2009, the ther girl on this photo with Chris from Birmingham in the yellow jumper is LIz Fernandez from Corby - my old home town. Gill
  4. Hello Christine and Brigid - Gill here...... 5. A rather hip shing, Julie
  6. Until Rod put that link up I had not heard the Copper n' Brass version for nighe 40 years......and even then it had only been in a club context. I have never suggested it is the superior version but I had assumed, wrongly I admit, that it was a "soul" record. I have every respect for you afficienados but my God, you're so easily wound up. PS. I have nothing against Southerners...............so long as they live North of Chesterfield.
  7. OOPS! Yes but.........................................................................Yorkshire goes a long way down.
  8. Clearly you're another one. I'm a Northerner and I am aware of the track's origins. Now surely, even though you dont get Northern, you must consider that as PROGRESS!!
  9. Obviously you're a Southerner. We've got a lot more street cred up North.
  10. Well thanks there MSS---------------------but how is it that every time Ive asked you in the past you've never come up with an answer????? Point 2---------------------Modern innit?
  11. Yes, the soul version of the Chicago tune. Its still stuck in my head after all these years. "As I was walking down the street one day..........................." Many thanks in anticipo
  12. Heres my top 3:.................................. 1 Lovin Spoonful----------Do you believe in magic 2 Norman Greenbaum----------Spirit in the Sky 3 Steam-----------Na na hey hey 4 Titanic-----------Sultana Werent they?
  13. OH! You still around? Happy christmas then from The Soulful Duo (one more soulful than the other)
  14. Hi Swish ( also Bri Phillips) Now I can completely concur with you Swish that Rufus Lumley was discovered at the time of Up the Junction--or maybe just before but certainly after the demise of The Wheel. I recall vividly sitting in the Clarkes Arms in Hyde discussing records with my old mentor Dave Slater. He told me about it and I remember telling him about what I thought was my latest discovery---I'll Try-- Sam&Bill. He knew it, however (yawn). We thought we knew it all, didnt we? But I've recently had some fascinating discussions with Brian and have been gobsmacked at his depth of knowledge and what actually was played at The Wheel and contemporary venues. And how sounds got played, then were forgotten and then were "discovered" anew by the a newer generation. In those days I guess that the average Wheeler was only around for 2 or 3 years before getting married and settling down to family life. Not like us "Northern Soulers" eh? Another thing. I doubt anyone will take this seriously but Dave Slater insists that Frank Wilson was played at The New Elizabethan, Belle Vue circa 1970. How can that be right? But I can assure you Dave knows his onions and he aint no bullshitter. Erroll Dixon on Rainbow-------Had this ever since my early prenighter days. Great record but labels definitely reversed. Everyone referred to it as I need someone to love and I always thought that that aint right. Circa 1972 I found a copy of "I dont want"on Direct on Shudehill stalls. Bought it on the strength of "I want". The other side is "The Hoop" which I dont rate at all. "I dont want", however is a great record, the official "A" side and the side which should have got the plays imo. More R&B than "I want", though. Confused?? Wish I could write effortlessly like you, my old pal. RICH

  17. Could I pop my head above the parapet and suggest it is their BEST ever record? Particulary sublime is the slower cd version.
  18. He had 2 or 3 releases. One on UK Polydor I recall. Dont think this was one of them. Is it any good?
  19. UK recording released on Page One. Not great dont you think? £15 ish I'd say.
  20. Thought Chris Jackson-Since theres no doubt was also due for release on 444? Steve How come no -one mentions bustaids? did it for me a few times
  21. OK Ive been itching to join in. Was it 444 and Black Mother Goose, Sam Nesbit? -- played early UTJ Crewe? Also was another scheduled by some bird ? Memory's failing me now but I can remember 7r&bs kick 8 g&cs into the long grass! Another great thread incidentally Swishy
  22. I looked at this and thought I read "Croasdell set to transform the West End" !
  23. Great Record Surprising its as rare as it is. Before I was into Northern I remember it being played on the pirate radio stations quite frequently when it first came out.
  24. HOW INCONVENIENT!! Just because of a slight hike in the rent i'm gonna have to walk an extra 150 yards there and back. I make that 300 yards. More or less half a mile. I just wish these soul shops showed a little more respect for their customers. My God the last time I was in there I spent good money ( over £10). Once I spent nearly £30. And having to endure constant ribbing by the likes of Derek, Carl and the Chief of Police ( who always looks at me funny) , makes me wonder is it worth it all? Course, on the positive side, the extra journey will take me past some interesting shops. Should be able to get the wife something to keep her sweet, at least.
  25. Ive got it but dont rate it. Don Charles' version on Parlophone is a different matter......
