  1. ok I never wanted to know everyones ins an outs , I aint a census you know I meant soulfully threads run its course so gonna close it now. Chalkys last post absolutely sums up this thread thanks to you all, and we never managed to fall out once did we !
  2. Yes Andy agreed. I just want to know why so much aggressiveness sometimes I put my heart on the soul table I told everyone how I felt I told everyone my thoughts I am still as passionate as ever I still believe in this scene as it stands now I still love my music I still get the chill down my spine I still hope to be doing it for as long as I can this has gone completely off topic now, I asked a question no ones answered every body has posted something and put their view across but nobody has said what they did the week end , and if you think about it, this is to everybody, its a relevant question
  3. and still no body gets it
  4. like his hair
  5. look I asked a question. none of you have answered
  6. most likely my last post,But just as a matter of interest..what did you all do the weekend, woody drove back from London Friday , went to sleep, we then went up the motorway again, to Worcester (yes it was me spacehopper), listened to some great music, bought some tunage off Des, cos it 75% cheaper aint it. went to bed very late, got up, had some tea, up the motorway again, went an allniter , sold some records, traded, chatted, listened to more music, went home, woody says, we aint stopped, all weekend , cost us a fortune in petrol, knackered on sunday, slept some more. played some records, then he went back up the motorway to london to work on the sunday night. got twenty ponds to my name. better than watching the shite on TV though aint it
  7. YES but at least we still got Butch . he breaks the new stuff still.
  8. I actually like a venue with two rooms, for if I feel the musics not to my taste , I can always divulge my self in another room, although most times .I never seem to move from where the records are If I am right, going back to marks post, we have go go children In Bristol ? which is the same kind of format ,age range 18 to 50 odd year olds, all mixing to gether ect. I have not ventured there, but I believe that anything go,s including a bit of ska as long as its 60T,s But saying a small venue is the way to go, actually dont think these days , anyone really can get a full house in that format, from what I can observe , most people seem to go by where the crowd is, instead of making there own mind up, and will happily go to a certain venue, if their mates go, and they know it will be busy ect, and bypass, a better musically and forwards thinking soul nite. I really dot think there is an answer to this. however at least we have had a good discussion . put our thoughts to print, even if I , or others don't quite agree with what's been said. The posts on here have been excellent, but I think this thread has run its course, for I fear that we will still be chewing the soul fat this time next year.
  9. and dont you dare say anything its in the sales box
  10. Mark..its an entirely different kettle of fish in the states.. its still a young scene there at the moment , as it is in Germany, they are up for it all, and good on them, as you say Chicago..is developing... give it time , then come back and in a few years time and tell me the same. Were really on about the shameful tosspots who insist on doing there utmost to fook everything up, all I am hoping for this thread will hi-light to us all ,as we seem to sometimes forget what its all about..just a reminder as it seemed to be getting outa hand again, make us sit up and do sommat about it
  11. kev please bring back USOS..one of my favourite venues and I miss is greatly , even if you just did 4 a year say, think I am having withdrawal symptoms..go on you know you want to...
  12. As you know so have we, we still get asked, whens Disciples on again..theres just not a clear date its a nightmare, as some one said already, a lot of the problems are greed, and people with records, wanting to play their records so, they start a venue, and I really put my foot in my mouth last nite, but thats not usual for me as we was chatting about my posts, and I said, the trouble with where I live is yet another fooking motown nite sprouting..to the person whos doing it, went down like a heavy lead balloon of the biggest order. Sheridans, was fabulous when at Dewsbury , I can remember one particular nite, Tim Brown was Dj ing I was on the dance floor, and I was thinking, it dont get much better than this.Fabulous atmosphere...and it was a bloody long way for us to travel there, but many times we did, and it was worth it, but I ask you if it came back next week ,would it get that same support, I think not. As for people playing expensive records, there's nothing wrong with that , I guess all of us posting on here , we appreciate just how hard it is and how rare they are, and you can play a ten pound tune rite after it, if it follows, but what I hate is somebody playing what they think is the dogs bollocks, and if fact a load of tripe, thats when the selfishness comes into it, and that's down to the promoter, who really needs to look at who they are booking, instead think about the whole picture, think about your paying customers, do it right, so many times I see line ups that for me dont work, but its not for me to say is it, or is it?
  13. pete we would love a juke box, but I fear we cant afford one we could stick all those records we got that are crap lol
  14. yes Joan agreed..but I did not want to give anyone the wrong idea, that I have lost my passion and dedication, like most I have had my moments as everyone does, I still cant believe after all theses years, that I still cant wait for the week end to come round, with excitement and anticipation to get on that dance floor and strutt my stuff actually as you know , I do sometimes close my eyes and totally get into a particular record . I,m off into that soul heaven, some people think I,m drunk, sometimes I am , but certainly drunk with enthusiasm, feeling every instrument in a particular record. and its that what has prompted me to start this thread , for if I and many many other feel like this, then why are some people intent on bad mouthing ect , I just dont get it, I want I suppose the respect back that we all used to have.I know we cant be one big happy family, that's an in-possibility , but now we are all getting to the old farts club, lets make the best of it before its too late.
  15. yes have you not read the thread about sniping ect
  16. I have to just say, me and woody are not full of " doom and gloom " by any means, and we do go out and have a whale of a time , we go where we want, to all sorts of venues , and sometimes, some of the things that have happened to us would have you all falling off your seats with laughter, but that's for another thread me thinks.. as for being old and hip replacements ect...and being over 50 myself, let me tell you about a time when we did the Sunflower, small basement venue, dance-floor the size of a postage stamp, upstairs a bar with all kinds of younger folk shall we say, and some 20 year old,s heard the music and came down , with a quick U turn,,saying god this place is full of OLD people, and they smell FFS I cant tell you how we laughed after the shock However just how many of us have had hip and knee replacements, nowt wrong with that, at least it keeps on the dance floor a bit longer, and lets hope that out kids can still enjoy some kind of scene that they are into now, when they reach our age..thats something to think about.how often have all of us come home after a niter, and been greeted by our children asking us well the hell have we been till this time of the morning. As for the SOUL SCENE..its evolved as its meant to be , as we live in a completely different era now say from 30 years ago, media of all formats rules, so it is going to entice people, who if it was still an underground scene as it was years ago, most likely would not get into it otherwise, when I was a younger lass if someone asked you what kinda music you like and you said northern soul, they looked at you as if you were off your trolley..however ,to-day its a completely different game, commercialism at its best rules, and even the girls at work who really don't have a clue about what, I do or where I go, say there's a northern soul nite by us with great anticipation, waiting for me to say yeah yeah where is it I will go, I say, its crap and they play CD,s they just dont get it ..thank god, cos soul as I know it has saved me from many an awful works xmas anal party!!!!
  17. excellent post John I would expect nothing less from you..see you at rugby for a good old chin wag as we always do
  18. yes Billy, so do I, I do pick and choose where I go, I will always try to support my friends , but if it turns out to be dreadful then actually I wont, and please dont ever ask me what I think as someone who is not afraid in coming forwards I will say the truth, much to woodys embarrassment but of late or is it just me, the sniping is getting out of hand and going way too far!!!! and its this which is spoiling it for a lot of people.you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make em drink it up.I have some very dear friends on this scene, and will always go where I feel welcome thats as much a part of it as the music, the whole feel of it.the word that is lacking in everything which has already been mentioned is RESPECT..don't seem much of it about these days.
  19. Promoters will have to start showing some balls, introduce a few Dj's who can advance things, I'm not talking about new music all night or even a large part of the night but to strike a balance and freshen things up a little, maybe something different every 3 or 4 records, I mean 5 records in a set lasting an hour is f&ck all, dancers should show a little patience and realise not every record will be to their liking and that someone else might just be liking what they don't. I've been looking at playlists for several venues, boring boring boring....many good rare records but simply boring play lists, you hear them all the time. A Dj who spends a fortune will always get the bookings yet a DJ who plays good imaginative sets (I don't mean upfront either, oldies included in this) without resorting to the cheque book is always over looked. I fear though it is too late and that we are past the tipping point. A good point about DJ,s with imaginative sets ...one thing I always try to do, with honesty, is compliment some one I have listened to,who IMO played a great set of records to us the punter, all to often on lookbacks I see nothing said when it should be, I think the old green goddess gets in the way far to often.
  20. there's a lot of good good points made here!!! thank you, as I did have second thoughts about my post this morning But I must make one thing very clear.although some of the things I have seen and heard make me cringe just lately.both me and woody have not lost any of our passion, in fact, as record dealer's will tell you, as I have said.any record that we buy, be it now or what we have bought over the last god knows how many years, we see as dead money. For us it purely lust in a way, we really do love em, and if this scene ended to-morrow, and there was no where else to go, we would still keep on buying! Its a very addictive hobby, as really a hobby is in fact what it is, truth be told for all record collectors.and many times, I have witnessed, people with a big redundancy come...and then when it does not quite go there way..sell up. Over the years so many venues , so many ,I cant remember or I forget that in fact I have been there, but thats an age thing, and its a bad egg who cant be bothered to support other places but wants to raise there own.too much of that going on,I like to think of myself as some one with a very varied range of all things soulful, except funk sorry, I dont mind funk edged, and will attend oldies venues as well as rarer ones, and plopping in some unknown stuff along with more well known stuff is the way to go for me, however I personally not keen when when a DJ plays to himself, seen that a lot too, there's a place for that, its called a second room IMO. So you see when you put all those things to-gether that's when it gets really pitiful, and good well meaning and deserving venues get overlooked for the ones that really should knock it on the head. The desperate to run a venue brigade has a detrimental effect on this scene, and I sometimes wonder if alls true about attendance, but then a phrase I hear too often is, but there is not many people there, so they don't bother going even if the music is brilliant, how are they gonna get it going with a great atmosphere if you cant be bothered to at least give a try and a bit of time, then the falling out comes...and thats what really ticks me off, the slagging off because some one wants theirs to be better even to the, detriment of the punters, who always have the final say, or at least should have.I try to do nighters and soul nites, but be-cause of personal things have not done many nighters of late, even the one 20 mins from my house , although I do hope to get there again.
  21. As a life server for my sins, and as a punter, promoter, collector, and hopefully DJ, the scene is an ever changing one, sometimes for the good , but most times not would I would like. for the most part. what I really cant get my head round, and it really displeases me , why some people feel the need , to put down ,or go out of there way to have ago, or make a nasty dig, on forums, about other people, I know its all part of a healthy debate, however, sometimes it gets very personal, I thought we where all in this to-gether? for the greater good. to hear fantastic music, to send that shiver up your back ect, to be enlightened, to go out and just have a bloody good time,As someone said to me a long time ago, the scene is very tribal, which is true, of course I understand that we all have our favourite venues, theirs no shame in that, I for one, have mine. and make no bones about it, BUT..its getting worse IMO.The scene is over saturated, week by week even more nites, niters, DJ,s, at the end of the day, each and all have every right to DJ or promote, and the days when we was all youngsters.adorning our big name Dj s have long gone. Good thing or bad thing? we are getting older, of course, dying, illness , all these things impact on us all. There is a younger generation, waiting to fill the shoes of us old school soulies, and I think the scene will be very different in 10 or twenty years time, it has to evolve, for all things do.Yes I know all about the you pat my back I will pat yours, that will never change, Tit for tat DJing always goes on and it allways will. And I know some people will never get on! But I still ask the question why? Beasys made a comment about my passion and that's why I have decided to post up this thread, and for no other reason.......
  22. I will second that, as I have said before sonic soul great music
  23. well I dun my lookbacks I think it says everything go and read it
