  3. UPDATE ON NORMAN FEELS RELEASE! Unfortunately there will be a slight delay in the despatch of the Norman Feels Release. The records are pressed and ready but unfortunately the picture sleeve has had to be reprinted due to a fault. I have been "Assured" they will be ready by the 20th May and all being well the records will go out to you the Monday after. This was something completely out of our control and appreciate your patience but I believe in the end it will be worth the slight wait. There are delays in raw materials across the Manufacturing sectors and print is one that has suffered along with others. If anything changes I will keep you informed but hopefully this the last delay. Many Thanks Alan @ Soul Direction. https://soul-direction.co.uk/

  10. Tim, Pretty much sums it up. I like to think I am pretty open minded to most genre's of the soul persuasion and reflect that in the records I buy. Having said that I am still a sucker for a good old Femme Northern albeit Mid tempo or uptempo and Philly just makes it even better. People move on in their taste's for various reasons but some choose to forget or dismiss records like this as something to be left in the past. We have spoke about this recently in a little depth and I have held back on posting anything about recent finds just due to the fact that because of the nature of the track it would fall on deaf ears. That's Ok and if no one ever heard it it would still mean a lot to me as I am still a real sucker for a sound that I grew up on. The record in question here is a good record with a solid pedigree in my opinion. As far a price is concerned I think it's pretty irrelevant giving that most things are going for prices that don't make a lot of sense sometimes. The crazy world of Northern Soul LOL....

  13. Soul-Direction are pleased to announce our next release. Split Decision Band - 'You're The One / My Love Just For You' - Soul-Direction Release notes After hearing this album on it's initial release this recently became a real "No Brainer" and to bring this as a 7" vinyl release is a real honour. For us, although designated A & B sides, there is no denying that each track is an "A Side" in itself and that's how we see them. An obscure R&B group from Des Moines, Iowa, Split Decision Band released one single during their existence - Issued on the local Network label in 1978.The band centred around Lead vocalist and songwriter Gordon Starr Flipping, whose collaborations with Prince made him something of a legend in the Mid-West area. Core member Gordon Starr Flipping was tracked down by Now and Again Records and his material was released in a self-titled full-length album released in 2017.These tracks were unreleased sessions recorded at an unknown studio or Gordon Flipping’s house in Des Moines, IA, between 1979-1984 by The Split Decision Band. The two tracks featured here were licensed courtesy of Now and Again and with the blessing of The Split Decision Band. Gordon Starr Flipping was born in 1957 as one child of five in Des Moines, Lowa, with white and Native American parents (Sioux People). At the age of nine he used to imitate James Brown and styled his hair in an “Afro” and despite being called numerous derogatory names his love of this type of music began to form. He started entering talent competitions and by the age of 14 he had teamed with cousins Larry & Lacey Fowlers to start a group called the Relations. They were inspired by James Brown and Angela Davis and liked the message they were spreading. He later joined Del Jones, James Watkins and his Brother Butch and formed the group New Establishment In Soul. Flipping wrote and recorded some demos whilst in the “music wilderness” trying to get enough money together to make a record which was proving hard to do. He also played in a few pick up bands to keep the money coming in. Later he met a guy called Leonard Shaw who advertised himself as a sort of “Go To” record guy. He met up with him to present his demos and was told his old friend Del Jones had already beaten him to it. In the meantime he had reformed the band and named them The Split Decision Band. Jones asked Flipping to join the band. Jones then turned Flipping’s “Watching Out” track into what sounded like a sure fire hit and “Go To” man Shaw brought in some additional members and promised an assembly line of hits through his network of contacts. Shaw proved to be a character of “Ill Repute” and after signing what can only be described as a dubious contract things were left very unsure in Flipping’s mind. Flipping along with the band members and others that Leonard had brought in managed to record enough songs for an album which they were to call “A Thing Of Your Own” between 1978 and 1983. By then Leonard Shaw’s “dealings” had caught up with him and even though the album had been finished his seemingly large network of connections never materialised. The album of course never saw a release until Now and Again released it in 2017. Gordon Starr Flipping now leads a non-profit group called “Young Heroes” that aims to help the kids of Des Moines off the streets through musical education and he still likes to impersonate any artist that inspires him. Some of the information has been drawn from the Now and Again Sleeve notes and other sources. Tracks Licensed to Soul Direction courtesy of Now and Again Records. 22. Like Dave @ Soul Junction I don't normally post about things like this but like him I am one person trying to get 10 things done at the same time. Not complaining at all as it can be very rewarding as well. It can be a "Catch 22" situation sometimes. For me the first release I did was due to go on the pressing plant in the USA and being given a cast iron guarantee this was the case doing a pre-order was only going to be a couple of weeks and after giving out TP's for radio station plays etc. we were being pestered to put it up for pre order. Unfortunately the other person I was doing the project with tragically took his own life due to personal issues which threw it all in to chaos for a while. The next couple were simply down to pressing plants giving you secure dates only to change the goal posts a couple of days before. The "Catch 22" comes into play when you put out TP's Promo's or audio files for pre play on radio etc. The second people hear them they are on the phone and emailing you wanting to pre order the item. I don't want to put a pre order too early but at the same time don't want to lose any momentum gained from potential buyers. I try now not to do much pre order too far in advance if at all in most cases now. The latest being shipped on a particular day and then taking 3-4 weeks to actually arrive. Personally I buy a lot of the new releases and have no real issue either way regarding pre order, especially given the pressing plants being overwhelmed by work. It's a personal thing which is down to the individual I guess. Let's remember the "Big Boy's" Universal, Sony etc. have tapped into a market of people buying re-issue LP's and seem to be swamping lot's of plants with work, but I suppose it's business and is certainly not a complaint. As far as Promo copies, I have them done to give to a list of people chance to play them on the radio etc. (which I really appreciate so thanks to those who do the work to promote these for me), as getting test pressings does nothing more than hold up production which is difficult already. I sell the remaining one's I have but have always made it quite clear when signing contracts for licensing and in paying publishing where applicable that I have them produced and pay any additional fees if asked or required. I am an independent on my own and at this moment have a lot of licensing contracts signed and paid in advance of anything being produced, which is my choice of course and do my upmost to be as fair to everyone involved which includes the customer who ultimately buys them. I am getting into a position that I can get some into my hands before sending out promos but It is a learning curve. There is some great stuff coming out at the moment and all being inspired from people like Kent Records who let's face it are "The Daddy" when it comes to this kind of thing and of course Soul Junction etc. I celebrate the fact that some great music is being given the exposure it deserves.
  23.
