I am one of the 'vets' who did go to Wigan regularly right up until the end so I went through the Lenny Gamble phase when they played pop music in the big hall and people wore 'Levine must go' t shirts. Some of us went to the Mecca first then Wigan and liked a bit of everything. I'm still like that in that I just LOVE SOUL MUSIC be it oldies (underplayed perleese), R&B, popcorn, modern, Motown (again underplayed), rare (as long as it's not too slow). Went to the Stafford reunion (having never been as was bringing up kids) and enjoyed that, love to have a dance in all the different rooms at Prestatyn, Cleethorpes etc. Love the London scene, Crossfire, 100 Club, VaVaVoom. If we didn't have new toons the scene would die and we would all be at home listening to Little Anthony on a compilation CD from Asda......

Solo Or Social? Northern Soul Best Shared Or Alone?
souldivawax replied to Mark Bicknell's topic in All About the SOUL
Spent about an hour DJing by myself in an empty room in the back of the 3 Cocks in Kettering yesterday afternoon and it sounded GREAT!!!! And I could play exactly what I wanted without the need to please anyone else cos what I'm playing is either too modern. too fast or too R&B. My husband, Trev, DJ's downstairs for me while I have a soak on a Friday night before heading off for some do or other, and thats great too. BUT, the buzz you get when you're on the dance floor (somewhere like Skeggy or Bridlington or Blackpool tower ballroom), surrounded by friends all dancing, smiling and singing along is UNBEATABLE!!!!!!! Better than any drug. Social, social, social, everytime. Get out and get on the floor as soon as you can. Your life depends on it. -

Hello fellow soulies. The Corn market hall kicked off at 7.30 on Saturday the 21st of April with Steve Towers playing a subtle mix of old and new. After a quiet start the place began to fill up a bit, but there were a lot of faces missing. We clashed with an annual commemorative do in Market Harborough which was a bit of a shame. And it looks like we’ve done it again in June and clashed with Rugby, (sorry to Karl and other organisers). Though numbers were down (even Bob Barr didn’t turn up) we still had a brilliant night, trying out a young local DJ, Sean, who when he’s not DJ’ing is a nurse at Kettering General. He played some really underplayed stuff and his spot was (in my humble opinion) inspired! If you liked Sean you can catch him playing a sixties spot in the Prince of Wales most Thursdays. Trev played his usual mix of modern, R&B and underplayed oldies along with a few youth club toons. His spot included a duet from Frank Wilson and Chris Clarke which I bet most of you have not heard before! June 2nd is the next date for your diary. We have managed to book our legendary friend Soul Sam! Ever popular Sam will be spinning a mix of old and new and we may be selling tickets to prevent the night being oversubscribed. We will keep you posted on this. Soul in the Park tickets and details will be available in June at £8 each (what a bargain). In the meantime, please pass this newsletter on to anyone you think may be interested. Tara for now, Trev, Steve and Lynn

trouble with university students is they put piles of bags on the floor, dance like the drunken tossers they are and tip beer all over the floor 'cos they are scared someone will pinch their drink. keep them out or teach them some manners before you let them in, they ruin the night for serious dancers.

It's What about the love by Johnnie Taylor. There is a speeded up version of this by Joey Negro but only Colin Curtis seems to have this version. something to do with the Shapeshifters now having the rights to the tune. hope this helps!
