Taff, That amazing! I had never seen the photo before Robert Kelly produced it, and all the US based Kelly brothers gospel experts I've spoken to, hadn't seen it either. Tell Paul I love his taste, and looking forward to seeing him at Sleepless Nights in Dublin at the end of april. Martin.
-
Hey Taff, The Kelly Brothers Photo is previously unknown shot that I picked up from Robert when I interviewed them a few years back for the Juke Blues article I mentioned above. Is it from Juke Blues that you got the scan of the photo? Offe Reece is in the back, with from left to right Andrew Kelly (deceased), Robert Kelly and Curtis Kelly. The 'fifth' member not in the photo is TC lee who went solo after a few years in the group. Martin.

The Kelly bothers, were and still are based in Chicago. Originally a gospel group, they then switched to secular music and had a hit on the Federal label 'It Won't Be This Way always' in 1963, they then moved to the Nashville Sims label (Love Time was on the Sims label), and eventually to Excello when Excello bought out Sims. There's a great CD on Ace/Kent of their Sims/Excello output. Terriffic Southern soul. They reverted back to Gospel in the Early 70's and the surviving brothers have their own Church in Chicago. There's a detailed article on the Kelly brothers in Juke Blues #63, get a back issue here https://www.jukeblues.com/back-issues.html Martin.

Two fine sides there Andy. Love the Johnnie Taylor, and I think the Judy Clay deserves to be played out a lot more... Martin.

Winstons wins it for me too, though I don't understand the strong dislike for Womack's version. It's a solid catchy update of the song that had more of a chance of being played in the black clubs in the US than would a straight slavish copy of the original... Versions in order of preference 1. Winstons 2. OC smith 3. Bobby W. 4. Naturals 5. Jaedes Martin.

Danny Duggan, who runs 'Sleepless Nights', the monthly Northern Soul night in Dublin, also does a weekly soul show on local community radio station Dublin City FM. The show is called 'The Soul Kitchen' and goes out every Saturday from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. It's a nice mix of across the board soul music and from time to time Danny invites DJ's who are in Dublin to guest DJ at 'Sleepless Nights' to come on the show and spin their favourite soul records... You can pick it up on 103.2 fm in the greater Dublin area as well as online here https://dublincityfm.ie/ Well worth tuning into.... Martin.

Agree with all the compliments paid to Sandra's Demon LP, I bought it when it came out and couldn't believe how good it was. I was delighted when 'I'll Come Running Back' took off on the scene Here a link to an article on Sandra by Colin Dilnot on Sandra's web site https://www.sandrawri...b_Articles.html And another great side... Yes Sean, 'Maybe' is the ultimate female wrist slasher.. love it... My copy well worn too, but it would be worse if it was left unplayed... Martin.

Hey Baz, you forgot to add The Gloria Soul the list. 116 Gloria Soul & The Hot Grits - Satisfy My Hunger / Sold Out I got talking to John Ridley after I posted the Lil Willie and Gene Kador 45's to your Crossover thread, and he agreed the two great raw deep flips on the Lil Willie 45's needed to get up on his Sir Shambling site. Martin.

Yes, strongly agree. I hadn't heard Susan Maughan's version before, and with luck I'll never heard it again, pure pet Clark pop that sucks the 'soul' out of the song. Had to listen to Wade a few times to purge Maughan's version out of my head.... Martin.
