Media Talk - Movies and Tv
I've just stumbled across Blood Coast on Netflix, a French police thriller set in Marseilles. First episode looks promising, nice setting in the coastal city, and lots about French production that I like. Anyone, and I know a few fellow SS's do, who enjoyed Braquo, will probably like this. Peter π

Media Talk - Movies and Tv
Well, I've binge watched Fin - season one and two, and all five seasons of Love/Hate; both very excellent Irish produced gangster/thriller shows. I've been scrolling and mincing about looking for my next binge watch, I did Grieselda, on Netflix, which was ok. But. So, any recommendations from the watchers on here? Thanks Peter

The George Pepp vid paints it's own picture; the segregation, subjugation and ghettoisation of our black brothers and sisters. Good song, and great vid. Peter

Eddie Holman - Preacher Man
Hi John I don't know the answer to that; there are others far better informed than I am. The small article I posted was fairly recent, so assuming that was an accurate piece, and I have no reason to believe otherwise, it may be the case. Regards Peter

And he's thumping out those Church sermons every week. His faith comes first these days, but yes the man can still sing. Peter π

MANSHIP Ending this Wednesday 07/02/2024
I'm not really up to date with auction/general prices. However, Daybreak at Β£1,700? It's a fantastic record, one of my favourite modern sounds, I used to really annoy my mum, having first heard in Richard's set at Wigan, singing the chorus over and over again at home; "don't you know any more words to that song"?, "no mum". π«£ Peter

Pricing
You've just got to do your homework Stephen; just as you've done for the northern soul things you've been buying. To answer your question more specifically, I've never had a bad deal because of the above. I have in the past bought records that have been covered up, at the cover up price, only for the record to be uncovered the next day, which saw the price drop. On other occasions more records have been found in quantity and again the price drops - sometimes, but not always. Other's may have been disappointed and feel hard done by, but I've always bought records on the basis that I like the record, and have budgeted for it. That's my approach and experience; others will have different experiences. I've had a number of collections over the years, but don't buy anymore. I gave my last collection away; for nothing, in 2019. I'm sure some people will balk at that and think I was stupid; I'm just a generous sort of chap. π«£ I do have the occasional regret, particularly as I've been unwell for the last three years, and now I could do with some money; but I'm ok with it. Regards Peter

Eddie Holman - Preacher Man
My friend Paul is a retired church Pastor, I call him Preacher Man. I nicknamed him that a while ago as I think it's a pretty cool tag. Anyway, rather randomly, Preacher Man, knowing I was interested in soul music, although I can't get him past the term "Northern Soul", spotted this in a Christian free paper which is distributed free in his church (and thousands of others). It's a very small piece about Eddie Holman. The photo bit is on the front cover, and the tiny other bit just inside the cover. I thought it was interesting enough to post here. Excuse the poor attempt at copy/cut/paste - you know what I'm like; someone may want to tidy my job up. π«£ Peter

I think that's a fair assessment Baz, and probably just about where I am, as an old man who started my journey with the music since I was a youngster, attending my first all niter in 1978. Of course many people were involved much earlier than I. Your comment regarding Otis Clay particularly resonates with me; I was only speaking about hm and his wonderful musical legacy yesterday. In fact I shared one of his tracks which was posted on a thread here with my friend Preacher Man, a retired Church Pastor. (My nickname for my friend taken from a number of great soul records). My final point would just be to say that there are of course a number of "big name", long time stalwarts of the scene, who make a living out of trying to recreate the "speed rinsed coolness we weβre brought up with". It just can't be done. Regards Peter

World Cinema throws up a whole new experience in film viewing, as has been said my fellow SS'ers above. I think the French stuff is my favourite - it's just a really different experience. I don't have the right words or terminology, and I'm not as learnED as some of the other posters, but to me it's just more true to life, the characters aren't always glamorous, for example female actors are often sweaty, no perfect teeth, they're just real. That's not a great example from me, but you know what I mean. I've seen some amazing Belgian, Dutch, African stuff, along with my love of French produced stuff. I wonder whether World Cinema should have it's own thread - particularly as not everyone is a fan. Lots of people can't get past the subtitles. What does everyone else think? Mike, it's your shout, what do you think - we could include Welsh stuff! π Peter
