  1. Agree with Dean's comments, but of course some will say on here its "promotion",which its not.Just answering you Dave. As my missus says " a little bit is sometimes enough".Same with Lookbacks.
  2. Following a thread about Tony Middleton / Bobby Matos - Already Satisfied (Speed) a week ago, Dean Rudland posted on the thread to alert me to a compliation he'd put together. The Soul Of Spanish Harlem. Got one from Amazon the other day.............Superb. Opted for vinyl rather than CD. Brilliant four sides of listening pleasure. Couple of big northern based tracks including the above and 107th Street Stickball Team - On Old Broadway. The album is latin taste by great varying degrees, some obviously so - some so subtle you need to listen with care to hear it. Artists are: Ralfi Pagan The Terrible Frankie Nieves Titos Ramos The Harvey Averne Dozen Monguito Santamaria The Lebon Brothers Orchestra Joey Pastrano 107th St Stickball Team Ray Jay & The Eastsiders 125th St Candy Store Parrish Ronnie Marks Olivieri King Nando Tony Middleton & Bobby Matos The Lat-teens The Nitty Sextette Russell Cohen & The New Yorkers Ralphie & The Latin Lovers Joe Bataan Thought it worth a shout to those interested. 3. Lookbacks often gets caught between promoting the next event and reporting on the previous. Not having a dig at anyone specific, I've been guilty of that a few times. Dave -I've just added December's Attic night to the Events Calendar, I'm always a bit slow doing that. I don't want to risk recommending us Dave, you're travelling a long way and have quite an esteemed reputation in tow. So this is how it is: Dec 5th will see us (4 regular promoters/record monkeys) in a little room above a pub in Mansfield. Room is good for purpose, handles up to 70 with ease, we usually get around 40+ in. Some nights been as low as 20, others been full. Our strength is the guests we've attracted, last month John Manship played a set to drool over. Nov will see Ted Massey, last time Ted played was one of our busiest and best nights. Dec we'll be welcoming Andy Tats Taylor back to the guest spot, that's a really good pre-Christmas guest for us, as not only does Tats resemble santa, he brings along the same spirit and enthusiasm. As we're small we don't give any guidance to guests as to what to play (the exception being we expect originals only where possible), allowing the guest to play what they prefer without dancefloor expectations. We're not a big dance club, we have a dance floor but don't worry if it's not full. There are better dance clubs locally (I enjoy Bentinck and Annesley). We try to keep the quality high but less predictable. Out of the four regular record monkeys, we have enough variation to keep it quite fresh. We do tend to post playlists or part playlists. The event is always first Saturday if you want to lookback in lookbacks. We let our guests decide if they want to post playlists. John Manship preferred not to. It would've been great for people to see what they missed that night but we're not going to overstep what JM wants, we want him to come back. We tend to generate a fair bit of and looking over the decks. We tend to avoid the word "Bangin'" Hope it's a good visit, let us know where you'll be in case we get chance to say hello. Dean
  4. Trevski, is this the same car as at the back of your pic? If memory serves it was Richard's car?
  5. You don't work for RELATE by any chance do you ? Still, sound advise, you should
  6. Now that is interesting. I've just followed the link and purchased me one of those, pondered for a second over vinyl/CD and stuck with Vinyl Looking forward to hearing that. Not seen any promo either. Thanks for the information Dean - nice break at work to browse and place an order, brightened the day up. Dean
  7. Just thinking of a matter of perspective in the ccccccrrrrazyyyyy world of northern soul vinyl. How much did Frank Wilson go for a few months ago?!! What would you you sooner own, this lot or that? Imagine the months playing them through with a few friends sat around. On a note of wonderful coincidence I wrote my partner a cheque yesterday for £50,000 as part contribution on a house we're buying, how pi**ed do you think she would be if I cancelled it?
  8. No, labels right way John. You ever heard Already Satisfied played out any time?
  9. Saw with interest John Manship has Tony Middleton & Bobby Matos - Return To Spanish Harlem (Speed ) on his auction. I was talking to Johnny Fingers at the last Attic night about this track, I was playing the other side "Already Satisfied" as Johnny asked about it. Soulful Kinda Music website ( https://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/tmiddleton.htm ) strangely doesn't list the flip side, listing as: Tony Middleton & Bobby Matos Speed 1016 - Return To Spanish Harlem / ? - ? Couple of points - Has Already Satisfied ever had much club interest. I like Return to Spanish Harlem for its quirky northern/latino feel but in my opinion Already Satisfied is the superior northern side, perhaps I'm just old fashioned. - Are there copies without Already Satisfied on flip? Just curious about those question marks.
  10. Sorry, memory failure, not a date stamp, written on. Took some diggin out! I'm well aware this isn't an original but my point is this is more credible as it's not pretending to be something else, and I've more respect for that and the chance it may be (mildly) collectable one day in its own right.
  11. That's what I was thinking, am trying to keep my mind open as to if the date stamp has any retro appeal? I'm struggling to recall what the original looks llike, I think it was very close to the "original" re-issue if memeory serves me right, so wouldn't be so close to this more recent one. I'm still of the opinion why not put a current date stamp on if you want a date stamp to identify it as what it is. I'm sure I've got a Jerry Williams - If you ask me, (second issue) with a 1973 date stamp on it that now seems quite cool as it identifies the record clearly as what it is.
  12. Do wish we could get some respect for labels. This is promoted as a re-issue by www.soulon45 so no attempt to con but why re-issueing with the date stamp? Why try for such obvious look-a-likes? Tend to have more respect for re-issues that have their own identity that may one day be colectable in their own right.
  13. Heh heh, thanks for that Nev, think I'll be DJing in one of those Aprons at the next Attic, I wonder if She's intertested in sponsorship?
  14. Agree whole heartedly with all the above . . . . . but what about her chicken and waffles?
  15. just watchin' Later with Jools Holland, pleasure to see the wonderful Gladys Knight looking so well and performing so great. Something of the show's description on t'web made me smile tho: "Legendary 'Empress of Soul' Gladys Knight, whose career spans 50 years and has taken in stints at Motown, Buddah, an array of Grammy Awards and owning a chain of chicken and waffle restaurants, is on the show to perform a number or two from her stellar back catalogue." Anyone been in one of her chicken and waffle restaurants?
  16. Could use some scaffold inside, that pile of Val Doonican albums defies gravity
  17. That does it Ted I'm in there when the smoke clears, lookin' for 'em. I tell you the whole building above Rob's is gutted, as we would've been had it been Rob's. See you soon mate.
  18. Was idling around Nottingham today and thought I'd pop into Rob's record shop up Hurts Yard to risk having a pile of 45s bury me. What a narrow escape he's had. Libertys night club that backs onto his was burnt out last week, didn't realise how close to Robs this place was. Very close thing for a shop that should be a national treasure. Hope all's well Rob and you can re-open soon. Might give you time to have a bit of sort out
  19. That seems to make sense to me. I think (don't mind if i's just me) we confuse the issue by using OVO as shorthand for "credible for a northern soul dj/record monkey with a conscience to play at an event that has any respect for the scene and its history". If I play anywhere (very small time record monkey me) I don't knowingly play bootlegs/fakes. It matters very much to me that the record on the decks, whether mine or not, have some level of authenticity, the greater the authenticity (usually but not always the rarer) the more respect I have. Now, I know that's been discussed to hell and back on here but I think it's on thread. As an example, I have a Stemmons Express on Wand, I'll happily have that in my box somtimes to play, if another person has it on Karma I'd prefer for them to have the option to play it on that label. There's a hierarchy of desirability in my head about authenticity and rarity. Many auhtentic second label issues I would class as OVO by shorthand but it becomes fairly personal and arbitrary. In short, for me, OVO can be taken as embracing the spirit of rare records and their importance to the scene and those who enjoy it.
  20. Apologies if it's in there, at work feeling a little blury and delicate today, seems too obvious...........................Blackpool Mecca, Not forgetting Sherwood Rooms at The Swan, Mansfield Edit - Sorry all pages were not coming up first time i looked, must be there somewhere.
  21. [ Don't worry though fellers - the Attic lads are renowned for their relaxed, open-minded, touchy-feely deck management.
  22. Whatever we think it will be....... it will probabaly be different to that. Like lots on here, NS is at the core of me but I've a varied taste for music. I've been going to festivals for a long, long time. At V fetsival (Stafford) and Leeds this summer (?) with my daughter. My son was at Leeds but as he's 19 only saw him once and that was him pretending not to be hammered. The point of my post is this: I'm finding a lot of "mainstream" music very dull at the moment. I usually enjoy the smaller tents at festivals to see who's coming through, not this year (Kid Brittain were ok). Left me with a thought that in a deprived time (ok, obviously my taste and opinion) for anything new and exciting, northern soul in all its guises could be quite attractive for a new generation. I'm sure it was the pop crap of the early 70s that ended with punk but propelled me into northern. (of course there are some exceptions to that generalisation). Just an opinion.
  23. Not a big record but springs to mind for this topic - Johnny Wyatt on Challenge, A side usually listed as Hang Up The Phone on lists, check out the flip, Any Kind Of Love. Powerful big vocal that builds to a peak, old style pounder.
  24. Up until the age of about 19 or 20, I still had a really bad speach stammer. By the time I'd asked a DJ for anything dawn had broken and in some cases the record had been bootlegged!
