  1. was hopefully tryin' to avoid a bidding war with you Smudge, I'm prepared to go to £205 . . . . you never know. Although worried now Paul D has posted looks dodgy, or is that a clever move to snag it at £200?
  2. Bit of a fraud putting this in "Look at Your Box". Wish I was looking at it in my box. West Coast Dunhill issue on ebay Be very interesting to see what it goes for against what it may have reached in a more high profile auction like JM. Interesting that the seller is williehutchdarren - will he have to change his name once he sells? Must be like selling the family jewles. Must get a lottery ticket this week.
  3. Hi Steve. I do recall a sudden influx of parka's that coincided with a boom ofr Booker T Green Onions and Russ attempting to get back to his roots. I don't think you can sum Wigan up as a single aspect. There was a different feel between Ms and the main room. There was a big change when the Friday oldies night started up. That was hugely popular, I think I recall it correct that the oldies night were monthly with occasional additional nights "Oldies revival" or some other revival thrown in on other Fridays. The oldies night affected the Saturady attendance. There was quite a different feel to fri Oldies night and regular saturday nights when the Fridays started. I'm sure I recall some Sat nights when Ms didn't open because there weren't enough people in. Whatever the many opinions, Wigan was an important night in the northern soul calendar of its time, and for some time it was The important night for some time. It did go through quite a few waves of popularity with complaints of commercial sell-out with lots of media interest. I'm happy to remember the good tunes played, the floor, and the people we met there, that could in no way be counted as a demise of the scene. I'm happy to pass over the other crap. Hope to see you out soon - by the way, was in London shopping with Molly on Saturday, she was thrilled to see your name outside 100 club, "That's him who stayed at our house who dresses old fashioned, but cool" Praise indeed.
  4. I love the social history of these stories, kinda brings the disc / sleeve to life from another perspective. Love the Judy Street mum story too. There's a book in this somewhere.
  5. Odd that on the whole until Nov 2010 feedback seems postive then almost all negative. Thanks for the warning shout, definitely to avoided.
  6. Have a dcp promo of Gayle Harris - Ain't Gonna Let It Get Me Down (suitably the last record played at The Attic Soul Nights. . . . . . .so far), which doesn't look too great but plays fine and clear. Picked up a lovely looking, almost minter, issue that arrived yesterday. The marks on pic are shadows from outside. One of those records in my opinion that there are plenty around but most are tattered. Sooooo disappointed. Looks great, not blaming seller, but plays with such an overpowering hiss for half of the track it's next to useless. Record looks like never previously played, is there anything to be done regarding hiss removal? Is this a common feature with issues of these, is there a bad batch? Anybody want a hissing aint gonna let it get me down (not losing the irony!)?
  7. Played ok here (hpoing I'm not infected now). Average instrumental. Although I do now have a date in Moscow.

    My Wants List

Black issue is much harder. I'm sure Adam had a yellow demo in his box at Rugby for £100. I'm sure it was booted on the yellow demo too, as a loo-a-like without the special products logo, so beware of that. Think the blue/gold uk re-issue is legit re-issue but quite cheap still.
  9. There's a sound clip further down the page. Is there some mental health issue here or simply a way of getting noticed/talked about to market other sales. It's beyong stupid, is the "0" key stuck on his/her keyboard?
  10. Think to some extent it depends on the record and the collector. Depending upon rarity, there are those where many collectors simply want the pristine, as near to mint as possible. Over the year I've had sleeves signed, as that personalizes it to me without "spoiling" a label if I want to sell on. Thanks for replies, interesting stories in this grand vinyl/styrene collecting world. Dean
  11. Topic inspired by receiving today the quite ordinary SS715 Lp Earl Van Dyke - The Earl of Funk. Ebay add said "Some writing on sleeve". Upon arrival writing (handwritten) on sleeve goes: "To The Sweetest lady I Know God Bless You George Benson '70" Thought the writing on label was more interesting than the album. Must be a story there. Who was the sweetest lady George Benson knew? I'm aware this isn't "On Broadway" George Benson, but the Jazz detroit saxophonist from the Funk Brothers. I just love the history of these records, and the hand writing just makes it more of an item fo me. Got any label/sleeve scrawlings that are interesting over the years?
  12. Could be selling it for a friend across the street and using a long lense to take the picture?
  13. Overlooked? 2 good sides IMO
  14. £5 was the standard price for emi discs in the mid 70s wasn't it, strange sort of NS cartel in opperation there. Amuses me to think how credible we thought they were in our youth. Hindsight would make us all rich, but I often think what I could've bought then for £5s that I spent on Emi discs. I've had a great knack of buying the wrong records from an investment perspective, which I think I'm still engaged in. The one that started me collecting from a more serious point was a SOUL b/w demo of Jr Walker Road Runner. I got the sleeve signed at Wigan one night, I remember stumbling across the stage before he'd really finished his spot. The same night I saw S35001 Shorty Long in a box, I had a couple of others on the label and decided to get the whole run. That was before Frank Wilson arrived on the scene, or at least before it wasn't Eddie Foster. Not a big buy that started me, but that moved me from boots and re-issues onto label pride.
  15. Damn cheap and bloody damn good. Must be two of the best soul records to be enjoyed over and over again and again:
  16. Have loved this album for decades. Given to me by Dave Kettle (or was it loaned?!). Never seen any other volumes in the series. Anyone else? Billy Stewart - Summertime Fontella Bass - Rescue Me Ramsey Lewis Trio - The 'In' Crowd Etta James and SugarPie De Santo - In the Basement Little Milton - We're Gonna Make it Big Maybelle - It's a Man's World Bobby Womack - See Me Through Little Milton - Feel So Bad Ramsey Lewis - Wade in the Water Ko Ko Taylor - Wang Dang Doodle Fontella Bass & Bobby McC,ure - Don't Mess Up A Good Thing Bobby Moore & Rhythm Aces - Searching For My Love Bobby Womack - Come a Long Way Fontella Bass - Recovery Chuck Berry - You Came a Long Way From St Louis Bo Diddley - We're Gonna Get Married
  17. 1978, last on label, well worth a play:
  18. Speaking to Dave Rivers at Rugby last night, he's got some tales of note to tell about the early years.
  19. I think it's often sellers looking for a price guide or indication when to sell Paul. can be frustrating though when you think there's lots of interest and . . . . . . . nothing.
  20. Not such a big ticket item like some mentioned above but this amused and frustrated me last night. Very nearly got this for UA demo of Ray Pollard's Drifter$28.51 ($1 above $27.51) from ebay, that would've been a bargain! Winning Bid $103.50 My bid $101.00 previous bid $27.51 There were about 10 bids below $27.51, I thought mine was optimistic at $101
  21. My shout would probably be Rob Smith, unasuming always been around since my first ventures, doesn't shout about it, does it. Oh and dazdakins Mrs even though I've never met her.
  22. This may have been covered a few times but my poor memory can't recall this exact label design. Looks like the boot promo but without the concentric swirl lines. Any opinion?
  23. Several others are still $9.99 no bids, Vibrations, Ron Butler, Originals, Cody Black, James Carr, Candi Staton, JJ Barnes. Earl van Dyke seems to be attracting most attention. I thought they were interesting.
  24. I'm sure this will annoy someone, not my intention. Thought it interesting enough to share. Have you seen those signed contracts going through ebay https://cgi.ebay.com/Earl-Van-Dyke-Signed-Contract-Motown-Northern-Soul-Wow-/390258578132?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5add3952d4 That one is a Earl Van Dyke, Motown contract. Loads of interesting items. Please could I ask people not to bid on the Eloise Laws Love Factory from the seller, I was thinking of trying to get that cheap.
  25. A few parcels when home today. Don't know if it's related to security searches but I didn't think Americans did Irony? Notice at 9 o-clock "Unbreakable" , the fine line at 5 0-clock is hairline crack
