  1. I'm sure you've seen this Jim as it may have prompted your question. It got me thinking too. John Manship has Checkerboard Squares up for auction at the moment and in the write up says . . . . . "This was in the mid-70s the biggest instrumental play at the top Northern Soul clubs of England. Bootlegged in Los Angeles before the original was discovered by the Brits it was spun to wild enthusiasm as the Bob Wilson Sounds - Strings A Go Go ". Now I'm thinking it's a simple typo and there should be a full stop between Angeles and before, otherwise it was bootlegged before discovery by us? I know it was played in many a youth club soul night around the east midlands around 1973/4 but only ever on blue Soul Galore.
  2. A steady stream of these going through ebay over the last year. Only seen the pic cover not the label. Are these a Euro issue of the Right On issue, I see the sleeve has PYE RO 106, same number as the Right On Issue in UK. Not suggesting anything wrong just interests me. I can remember reading in my delivered copy of Blues and Soul (could have been echoes but kinda sure it was B&S) one week to look out for them as a new arrival on New Moon. I went down to Syd Booths in Mansfield and Phil Kingswood had New Moon promo's up on the wall for £1, got one but didn't really lik it at the time. Passed it onto Dave Withers on his Manchester indoor market stall one morning after Wigan as part of a few swaps i think. Can't remeber what i got. Just one on those items I can remeber the history of it coming and going. Was dissapointed years later when i realised it was starting to fetch a little more and my taste had moved on. It was a while before I saw a new moon issue though. Also - what was it with the re-issue flip with Bobby Kline, are these legit?
  3. Got one 45 left: One side The Tempose c/u (Lil Lavair and the Fabulaous Jades I think) - I'll Be So Happy b/w Lesley Gore - Just Casn't Get Enough of you (same as Apollas on Loma), think this is album only but not sure. Got this from Eric Hetherington local respected DJ we used to look up to as a 16 year old. Just found an album but don't remember track listing - sure it includes Rain tho. Terrible sound quality. The paper flier is an insert from an album put out locally, I'm thinking 1990s but not too sure. Can remember who but perhaps politeness should rule.
  4. You could get Richard Searling to confirm. Years after the photo Garry "the gossip" Churm told me it was Searling's car, although there isn't a record box left on the roof!
  5. The second issue (I always thought it was a boot) has black text on yellow label. That's presuming there's only one run.
  6. Not sure if this helps but the entrance to the Empress cafe is on this pic. Only fight of any ferocity I ever remember was between two huge (fat) doormen knocking each other down the balcony stairs that led down to the corner the gents toilets were in. I'm sure I remeber mocking some DS inside trying befriend us, but that could be an apocryphal memory that I've implanted from another venue. I def did get searched outside to the extent of having to remove my shirt mid-street.

    Wess Oliver

Think it was killa who included it in his spot at last Bradford rare and underplayed - one of the top tunes of the night for me.
  8. I'm sure Ted Massey has played this out a few different spots, but realise that's more recently.
  9. Thanks Mike. Was being lazy as in too much effort to sort it myself. Was wondering if there had already been a club time line done. I find myself getting mixed up as to what nighter came when. Perhaps look back at what I can record by different memberships and stuff and then start up in yesterdays.
  10. Is there any book, or has it been done on-line (on here???) that offers a chronology of northern soul all nighters. I don't have the history of many on here (and many not on here, thinking of my dear friend Garry Churm who lurks but doesn't post, the selfish *!**), but I'm losing the memory of the sequence of all-nighters that were important to me. Indeed I'm losing the memory of some nighters all together. Not so concerned about the last decade or so, thinking more of my formative years on the scene. For me, and in wrong order after first few no doubt: Nottingham Palais, Phoenix Wirrina, St Ives, Wigan, Coalville Tiffs, Samanthas, Cleethorpes pier and winter gardens, Wakefield unity, Morcambe pier, Blackpool mecca, Clifton, Bradford (was that queens hall), Hinckley, Warrington Parr Hall, Stafford, Keele . . . . . and i know I'm going to be missing some really obvious ones, just thought of a couple of local (to me) i've missed, Mansfield Swan, Rock city, and those nighters at Chesterfield Winding Wheel that were plagued by the police and DS. I'm plagued by one at Sheffield, I can picture the floor but nothing else, and one outside Manchester that's a bit misty. I daren't tempt my brain to consider soul nights!! Dayers might be easier though. I'm aware this is all a bit retro, but would love to see some kind of NS nighter family tree, like most family trees it would become much more complicated in latter days, perhaps too much to make any sense of. Just an idle intrigue Has anyhting been put down in print?
  11. Josie1 - sorry you've not got much response for your post. see you've just joined, don't be disheartened. Perhaps if you let people know what your intention is, are you looking to start a NS night in New Cross or looking for a place to go. There's quite a few London clubs if you just want a night to attend. best wishes, Dean.
  12. What a great Tower sleeve that one's in. Unusual design. Stating obvious, but then I guess only obvious if you know so will say anyway, there's a uk Capitol re-issue of this that should be cheap also.
  13. Posted 15 Jun 2010 - 09:16 AM You'll regret selling that Freddie Scott, one of the best tunes you've ever introduced me to (and you've introduced me to several), wonderful tune, deserves a big room spin. Nothing quite like sticking it in a mate when he's down. However, Kev at least your a leader not a . Think I might have a spare!
  14. https://cgi.ebay.com/Freddie-Scott-Ill-Gone-Northern-Soul-45-Shout-HEAR-/120668752102?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item1c186b08e6 Now I do really lik this track and think it would be a good one to hear out more, but I've always thought of it as a very cheap record to get. Just saw this Freddie Scott - I'll be Gone on SHOUT $67 with ten mins left and 12 bids. Where are htese bidders when you need em eh?
  15. Been waiting patiently for several 45s from USA. One won 20/12 arrived yesterday, one won 25/12 arrived today, as did a 30/12 purchase. All uk stuff has been very prompt though. As usual purchase from A45heaven purchased late on 1/1/11 arrived first post after bank hol - I think Barrie uses well trained pigeons. Some fly fishing stuff I ordered last Thurs (not from A45) also turned up next day even though it was quite bulky.
  16. Thanks for helping the curious. Sounds much closer to Tears (on givhan). The givhan's an odd one isn't it. Again no label credits and strangely the 3 discs having the same catalogue number 108 (Rodger Wade, Leonard Pierce and Master Keys). Notice it's Master Keys on the givhan too rather than Masterkeys, but definitely sounding right. Thanks again for the info. Dean
  17. Just enjoying the Masterkeys - If You Haven't Got Love / Weak and Broken Hearted (notice this is a Willie Mitchell prod) on Sport Records. Got to thinking is this the same group who recorded I Done Got On The Right Road on Co-Op, not really sure if that's credited to Masterkeys or Master Keys. Barrie had one a few month ago on his A45 list, Killa plays one out, but don't see the Co-Op one very often so can't recall. Just an idle thought - any info?
  18. That's great. Rubs the wrong way when it's $20+ postage on some
  19. Not of great interest, but thought it good to share some positive news about USA postage Seller:jlu33 ( 559) USPS First Class Mail International : US $2.92 Estimated delivery: Varies* Seller ships within 1 business day(s)Item location, mid-west USA! $2.92 That puts some to shame. Of course when item arrives with a customs fine, in a plain white envelope, unprotected, and postage due stickers I may have to reconsider, but for now Hey hey.
  20. . . . .and is in agin this year at number 57 on the 2011 list. Did hear ir a few times in 2010, although some of that may be due to me hanging around with Kev Holmes who originally put me onto this and played it out a few places. Personally I hope it keeps on going
  21. Bloody hell, now there's a record I'd lost from memory. Not heard or heard of it for !*!!* years. I don't know if I've still got one but will have a rummage, if I've not I hope it is still cheap as I woulddn't mind for sentimental memory. Thanks for reminding. I do like this thread, lots I don't know too.
  22. One of the first "club" soul records I can remember - and still love it. Sad loss last summer.
  23. Remember when this was filling floors - what were we thinking? L J Johnson - Your Magic Put A Spell On Me
  24. Interesting enough (IMO) lesser played but playable.
  25. Two Classic female vocals, very much of their day I guess but I can still enjoy these today. And I do like a date stamp!
