  1. Similar Cookie. The deal was well below book price so can grin and bear the cost. The lack of up-front declaration pisses me off. I'm a hobby buyer and tend to trawl (when I get chance) the next 24 hours finishing times, not giving time for question answer. Notice the guy doesn't do returns either. One to watch for.
  2. Won a 45 on ebay from musicman59 for $42. Paying two from USA today postage on one $6, this one $35.55 To give the full picture there was no postage quoted in the description, or restictions on shipping destinations. Not until I went into "ask the seller a question" and got the ebay options for frequent questions re postage did it say "This seller doesn't offer international postage". I've sent a question asking if $35.55 is correct. Genuine opinions would be welcome, happy to told to pay up and should've looked deeper into postage. Often don't have time to look into it if not clearly stated though. Can put it down to experience. Just watch for seller if you don't want similar charges. Dean
  3. Think it's one of those that's hard to put a price on, and there's a big difference between auctions and lists/boxes. If your patient on ebay they go through without much fuss. Picked up a Ex clean demo last year for min bid $9.99.
  4. There's a clip on You Tube Pete, a little Yuro' esque https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9lsscJLnHs I've got £25 for a Ex (or near) copy if you come across one - although as i'm such a tight git you'd probably get more.
  5. Almost fell for this. I'm a shocker for not reading through descriptions well enough. Over excitement on my part, but thought it worth a shout to any fellow over-exciteables. Was just about to grab a Buy It Now, The Kavettes - I'm Not Sorry For You on OKEH for $29.99. A second look at the picture made me pause, only having half read the description: Rare and in demand original US Northern soul 7" single by the Kavettes. See scan. This is probably a 1976 boot issue for the Belgian popcorn scene. There is no stamped matrix number in the run out groove. Am I wrong to be at the obvious discrepency between "in demand original US Northern Soul" and the following sentance "probably a 1976 boot issue for the Belgian popcorn scene" Seller alicedayglow Garden of My Mind Records.
  6. I'm always slightly embarrassed by the notion that when Frank Wilson - Do I Love You was covered as Eddie Foster, and even booted as such on a IN boot as I recall, I had been collecting the SOUL label for a couple of years (harder in the days before ebay) and had written to Motown for a label list (long before PCs or google) I had gratefully received a phot-copied ledger list that had S35019 FRANK WILSON - DO I LOVE YOU (INDEED I DO) / Sweeter as the days go by on the first page of the list. The sender had kindly written NR at the side of any Not Released tracks. Frank Wilson didn't have NR written at the side, still have the orig list. As an under confident younger small time collector on the scene I pondered if there was any chance it could be but never voiced opinion for fear of being ridiculed for not knowing the as yet unknown to me Frank Wilson track. A bit more confidence could have uplifted my status in the day! I recall hours of juvenile "fun" with Rob Marriot and his friend 'Hoppy' on journeys to Wigan taking inspiration from shop names for c/u for the imaginary day when we were going to unearth the next Northern Soul big stomper (or Killer-diller as Rob would say), Dorothy Perkins was always a favourite waiting its day.
  7. Called in the other day to wonder in amazement at the neat racks of LPs, Felt a little low, as if something sacred had been spoiled as Rob said "There's Soul LPs over there Dean, and Rock LPs on this side". I winced at the order before me but was soon uplifted by Rob "This is only a fraction of the stockto get back into the place though". I think we can soon expect the cuustomary leaning towers of vinyl and the disregard for health and safety . . . . . bring it on. By the way, there were some good priced soul LPs if anyone wants to grab anything before they get buried. Worth a look.
  8. As a slight balancing factor, although not enough to maintain the days of cover-ups at previous levels, we do tend now as a scene to have a broader perspective of what we as individuals mean by the term 'Northern' and 'rare' soul. I think our tastes have broadened bringing in wider searches. I agree its obviously much much easier to simply google for info on artists, titles, labels, writers, producers but think that's part of the movement forward. I've bought a couple in the last year by taking a chance on ebay on records that I can't find anything about. I find that fascinating that in an age of fingertip global information there are still wonderful bits of 7" vinyl under the radar. I still get a buzz waiting for an unknown to come through, mostly it's a let down, but the anticipation is good, and just sometimes it can be a winner. There are still bargains on ebay, rather than ebay auctions bringing prices up to book level I think ebay is bringing prices down. Good news if you're buying and are lucky, not if you're selling and unlucky on some items. I do miss record shops, called into Rob's on Hurts yard Nottingham yesterday to see his revamped space (there's another thread on that), and had a little find at this one in Nottingham a couple of week ago, but I don't have the time to get out and hunt them down. As much as we knock ebay I know when I'm in record bars at nights/nighters I'm nervous to buy as i'll often see the desired item cheaper on ebay.
  9. When people are rattlin' on about withdrawing and moaning about SS, remember posts like this, fascinating, awesome, brilliant. Thanks for post
  10. More than a little self indulgent but thought I'd share a happy hour+ playlist from home tonight. Playing some Motwon (and related) from the back of the box. Not the rarest but ooooooh my soul: Gladys Knight & The Pips - Stepping Closer to Your Heart Stu Gardner - Mend this Generation Four Tops - Just As Long as You Need Me Marvin gaye - Lonely Lover Major Lance - I Never Thought I'd be Losing You Danny Hernandez and the Ones - As Long As I've Got You Stu Gardner - Expressin' My Love The Commodores - Don't You Be Worried Liz Lands - Midnight Johnny Tommy Good - Baby I Miss You Martin-Luther King - I Have A dream (bit of a sunsetter that one) The Four Tops - Do What You Gotta Do The Ones - Don't Let Me Lose This Dream La Brenda ben & The Beljeans - Camel Walk Kiki Dee - The Day Will Come Between Sunday and Monday The Four Tops - Can't seem To Get You Out Of My Mind Little Stevie Wonder - Contract On Love Edwin Starr - He Who Picks A Rose Marvin Gaye - You Arthur Adams - Can't wait To see You You may ask why I'm posting this, don't know and don't care other than I really enjoyed that hour+, and it made me reflect upon some other Motown spots heard. Was talking to KevH and Steve L about a Motown dayer at Nottingham Palias, not sure but probably around '77, it was dreadful each trusted Motown tune must have been aired about 20 times that day.
  11. Picture taken from Web as not at my computer at the moment. Posted this when posting re MGM label. Just about in my top 10 home plays. The Panic Is On, wonderful tune.
  12. oh yes you are but you know you're gonna bump into 'em, Johnny Warner not a villain Dean
  13. Well written and reasoned post by Dave Kil above that gives a balanced perspective. Only thing I would add is that in my experience the endemic football violence of the 70s was put away for the duration of all-nighters as we travelled across the country. I could be suffering from rose coloured memory but I'm sure I discussed with friends at the times that carrying a nighter bag and dressed in a NS uniform was almost like a flag of truce regarding the usual terreced violent rivalry. Travelled by public transport from Mansfield Notts to Peterborough, St Ives, Cleehtorpes, Wigan, Sheffield, sometimes alone sometimes in small groups, with no real problem at a time when other rivalries would lead to trouble. The media often tagged onto an embelished darker side of the scene IMO. I think the media coverage was the catalyst for a period at the Casino where we expected trouble between the station and station rd. Enjoyed reading your account Dave.
  14. Also . . . . was it ever "covered-up", I remember the record but don't remember it as Dianne Davidson - just looked on ebay to find she's a Country rock artist. Stevesmith - did the UK white label you had include Little Milton and Denise Lasalle, strange item this . . https://cgi.ebay.com/Dianne-Davidson-Sympathy-Killer-Psych-Funk-45-LISTEN-/200478934071?pt=UK_Records&hash=item2ead79c437
  15. This is posted in Sales, need to post in Wants. Not criticising, helping . . . Dean
  16. Next victim . . . . , just sold (last night on here) Joe Phillips - I Just can't Help Thinking About You being convinced I don't play it these days . . . . . been singing it all day today and thinking "What is that I'm singing, f''in good tune" (although not particularly my version) and then realised what it was . . . . . and I'd sold it! Aint that typical, never sung it so much before I sold it. Don't worry buyer, I'll follow through.

  18. At risk here of merging one often discussed topic into another often discussed topic. And there will be those who presume that suggestions like this invoke a "soul police", but I think playlists should inform the discerning. I just don't think we see enough of them across a variation of nights. Although I do think fliers and posts on here should be reliably informative. If a night proclaims it's oldies then i know I need to be in a mood to go, if it's underplayed I expect to be challenged and come away with some new experiences. I accept that's not always perfectly possible on the basis of one person's/venue's underplayed is anothers regular play, one person's/venue's familiar oldie is anothers forgotten oldie and so on. If you're not proud of your playlist then what are doing it for?
  19. I for one am very impressed
  20. Hello Kev, I know we could discuss in person but thought I'd contribute as I was only thinking about this today. I'm trying to build up my paypal by selling several smaller items, as you know I've tried this before and always fail as I end up buying more than I sell at any given time. But that said, I'm trying again. I was then thinking that I would be likely to see this as monopoly money and if successful in building up a larger credit account would be in danger of paying over the odds for some things. Without going back to cross-refernce I'm sure there's a buy it now Ray Pollard - This TIme on ebay for $3,500 (could be $3000 but the same point), over priced in my paypal, would I be tempted . . . . . . yes. Another reason why I need a breathalizer filter fitting to my pc. Whilst ever I don't have anything in my paypal account I'm always bargain hunting, I think an account in credit will turn me into a different, less considered, buyer. Just thoughts. Edited thought having re-read your question: Another take on this is that in my opinion prices in record boxes at nights and nighters tend to be, on average, higher than finishing ebay or sales on here prices. Imagine if some dealer offered an on-line wireless log in at a night/nighter to pay by virtual money .
  21. It's going to be some task to get all those records back in the same order after the refurbishment! I hope he doesn't get them all out of order, that filing system is the envy of the Bodleian library, it didn't just invent itself you know. Good luck Rob. I know I'd love to have a sift through some of those hidden corners. I think KevH's point is actually true, there is a room at the back that Rob hasn't been able to get in for a long time.
  22. There's one with Yvonne Vernee on the flip, is that a more recent boot than the 90s repress?
