  1. More soulful than Northern, and on the funky side. S35112 was the number previously allocated to Edwin Starr " Aint It Hell Up In Harlem" which got a release on M1284 Don't think this got a release due to name copy with the TV character hitting the screen
  2. Sorry Lightwatersoul, I was getting posts confused. I was thinking of Russ's coment charlotta tillman - baby im serious "serious" northern thumper or what!!! Too may references to thumpin / thumper for my concentration
  3. If you have one for £30 I'll take it! Seems to crop up infrequently these days, sure I've seen it listed at £100+. Thinking of it, I've only seen black and white demo's, is there an issue of this?
  4. . . . . . and a good question it was too banjo. Myself and my lover Steve Lydon have applied as a couple
  5. Personal fav Often requested but for me it's always a bit too busy
  6. The other Clovers on Josie, worth a play Almost forgotten oldie 2 great group harmonies Club classic Personal fav is Flirtations - Change My darkness into Light, that's in a box elsewhere at the moment, will post later if nobody else does. Edit, apologies for repeat was slow sifting through boxes.
  7. Hi Mike, I'll just watch for a pm for any options left. Many thnaks, Dean
  8. If I look back at myself with honesty, the first several times I went to Top Of The World Stafford, I didn't rate it. I was stuck in an oldies / wigan classics mentality then, only went as I considered myself "on the scene". A few more visits and some familiarity creeping in . . . . . "Ok they're playing some good sounds". Time passes, and now the records played at Stafford are amongst my personal favourites. I think it is a bit of an attitude shift. You can say "each to their own", but I can't help to see my own point, that some (not all) of the oldies crowd are like me in my first visits to Stafford, not listening because you're listening for something else. My experience is that most of the up-front crowd (more often scattered few) do appreciate oldies, but not the same play lists week-in, week-out, without imagination or respect for original reference. There a a few good oldies nights that do play with imagination, but then you're caught playing to the floor-fillers that do want the same set week-in, week-out. Somewhere along the way I think some have given up on listening and rely on reminiscing. I had an attitude change and have listened since Stafford.
  9. . . . . . . and one for Kev H. Put me onto this a few years ago when it was another really cheap one. One of my favourite home plays of the last 2 years.
  10. Thought this was well worth a post. Check out the album cover, from when smoking was cool, not to mention leather trousers. Track 3 side 1 . . . . . . Open the Door To Your Heart, wonderful version.
  11. Part of growing up for a lot of people on here I should think. Sounds ok
  12. This IMO is a great tune, hairs on the back of the neck stuff, but never hear it (played it a few times out when we did the Attic). You can pick 'em up very very cheap, if you see one a couple of quid . . . . get it.
  13. I'll post the obvious. For me one of the great double siders. This promo is same both sides. Is there a promo of Stepping Closer to Your Heart on S35023? I know there is on S35034. Sure I've got both label designs for S35023 issue, see if I can find em out tomorrow for the set. . . . . and one non northern that is just brilliant for the voice alone
  14. For me it was Chuck Jackson at Nottingham (now Oceana, was it Sherwood rooms or am I getting mixed up with back rooms of Mansfield Swan?). Can't really say why, just came together, one of those nights. I'd have to guess the year at 83/84. Such a performance. Think I've got tape of 77 Jr Walker at Wigan Pete, must try to find it out.
  15. Thanks for info Kev, been on holiday so only just seen. Royce Hyatt doesn't feature on the '69 album i picked up out of curiosity, although prog rock it certainly is. Were the lyrics for Compared to What written by Gene McDaniels? Picked that up from an Ember comp album.
  16. May well have been covered before, sort of thing I'd expect to have been discussed. Does anyone have any knowledge of Mr Flood's Party? Is there more than one Party? Saw this Cotillion Lp a few weeks ago and took a shot in the dark on it. Not a big waste, didn't go for much. Although the first track on side 1 is "Northern Travel" northern, or indeed soul it aint. A look at the group on the back suggests as much! Imagine the bastard child of the Carpenters and Jethro Tull? To add further fun to the futile shot in the dark, when the album arrived, I undid the packing to be greeted by these two covers No vinyl, just sleeves used for packing, gave me a bit of a fright at first. Although I am now hunting the album to go with the "Live Mechanical Sound Effects" cover. The sleev notes sell it as " Live Mechanical Sound Effects In stereo has been designed primarily with the general listener, not the technician or sound freak in mind". Containing such oldies as Heavy Duty Motors with Circuit Breakers, adn Packaging Machine Collator, together with the funkier Lawnmower and the classic Small Cement Mixer. Anybody played any of those out?
  17. After all these years I still love Soul Symphony, a good buy. Hard to nail what makes some more soulful than others. I know it's out of fashion but Phil Coulter always gets the hairs on the back of my neck. I seem to recall a Kent LP (After the session?) of Instrumentals that you can pick up cheap these days. I purchased Subway Riders on Moonshot a while ago without reading the print and recieved the curiosity that is the genuine Popcorn Wylie after the session jam session that bears no relation to the Moonlight Music and You sound. Doh! I do think Instrumentals suffer from "forgotten" syndrome. Remember the days when Al De Lory would be on the decks four times a night! Not the most soulful but a good clapping tune.
  18. Always enjoy the label and artist of the months. Can't always contribute due to time / responsibility but always enjoy glancing through other contributions. Subject may be aligned to the old "bus" saying, you wait for ages and then 3 come along at once.
  19. A little bit of digging and found these - 104 - Grady & Brady - Love or Money / Just a Lot of Talk 107 - Grady & Brady - Sad September / Star of the Show Don't know them, not sure if Grady or Brady were David Gates? Anyway that completes the Planetary list I think.
  20. More info wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Gates . . . . . also found a good link but unable to copy/paste for some reason: Bilboard 16 Jan 1965 Vol 77 Number 3 on page 26 breaks the news of Gates signing a young 13 year old Margaret Mandolph to Planetary. Google "planetary records david gates" and it will come up on the first page. Just an interesting bit of history I thought. Hope it's of some use.
  21. 103 - Del Ashley - Little Miss Stuck Up / The Brighter Side 105 - Dorothy Berry - Shinding City / Standin' On The Corner I think A side for 101 is Aint That Love. 108 - David Gates - Let You Go / Once upon a Time David Gates aka Del Ashley owned the label.
