Interviews/Questions for Women and Northern Soul
Stevie replied to Keith Gildart's topic in All About the SOUL
In terms of numbers I think you may well be correct and may have been a direct result of the commercialisation that was taking place around this time. Clothes that had been made to measure only were now available off the shelf in High Street shops, Top of the Pops, Wigans Chosen Few, coach loads of people arriving at Wigan Casino eager to satisfy their curiosity, TV cameras etc. The effect of this was to disaffect many individuals who had previously been part of an 'underground' scene to the extent that they stopped going. In their eyes the 'scene' had lost it's integrity. It may have had more attendees in 76 but it was a different 'scene', a 'scene' which many felt had lost it's way. This feeling wasn't new. My understanding was that many who had attended the Wheel, Torch and Mecca never set foot in Wigan Casino for similar reasons. The music and the patrons were constantly evolving and have continued to do so right up until today. -

Was always difficult to pin him down on record condition - he'd always say stuff like 'looks alright', so I asked him if he could play it down the phone. He said he couldn't. I asked why not? Haven't got a record player.... priceless!

Received my set today. Flicking through the first one I picked up (Issue 2), Richard Domar's first page comments brought back some amusing memories of when I was buying off him. "This issue is dedicated to the half-wit who thinks that 7.30 in the morning is a perfectly good time to phone me and complain that I called him a wanker for sending me a cheque dated 1986" Would have loved to have met him in person when he was at his best/worst

Fair enough. Was trying to show that there can sometimes be a positive outcome to doing some free spots, especially if playing something a bit different to most. Can't comment on anything else except to say that I do agree with what you say about everything having a shelf life.
-
The fact that you DJ'd at all the pre Burnley events implies that you were happy to DJ for free. I imagine that a number of people might be willing to do the same in the hope that if they're playing a good set, they may be offered a spot elsewhere on the strength of it. No axe to grind here as I don't know either party.

TWO THINGS THAT ARE KILLING THE SOUL SCENE
Stevie replied to Speedlimit's topic in All About the SOUL
In the early nineties some great R&B was being played by DJ's like Carl Willingham, and Roger Banks. Problem was it wasn't accepted by the vast majority and effectively cleared the floor at many niters. As a consequence people turned to R&B clubs such as the hugely popular 'Hideaway' and second rooms at venues such as Middleton niter which attracted large numbers. If narrow mindedness was an issue, it wasn't on the part of those who enjoyed their R&B. My own preference has always been for - even though I dislike the term - 'Across the board venues' that play quality music of all genres including R&B. If someone can point me in the direction of somewhere that truly adopts this policy I may be tempted into giving it a go. -

Straight tone arms in themselves aren't a problem as the link makes clear - 'Were discussing Scratch DJ straight pivoted underhung tonearms, not linear tracking straight tonearms nor straight tonearms with proper overhang and the offset angle in the headshell'. I've used a pro-ject turntable with a straight tonearm for years and suffered no ill effects.
