  5. this has had loads of plays over the last ten years in the south, I've played it out many times over the last 2-3 years myself, in fact it's currently 'resting' in my own humble box as I reckoned it had become too hammered, or was certainly getting close to being.... brilliant mind, and I reckon the flipside is also superb and well worth a go (possibly veering a little too far towards Burt Baccharach but absolutely gorgeous nonetheless!) 6. LOL I also had the record finders 'experience' in about 1997/8 - I DID manage to get two copies of Lonnie Lester you can't go for $11 each, but that was IT.... Martin
  7. thanks for that Andy, was unaware- in that case I can also recommend St Paul's which is also a very short walk away (Watling Street is parallel to Cheapside) Martin
  8. I first heard it courtesy of Irish Greg who used to play it but I understand it was originally Dave Thorley who discovered it. Used to clear the floor regularly at TOS and SITC and I eventually sold my copy but then bought another one a year later. Continued to clear the floor with that one and sold that copy as well in the end! Personally I really like it, but it does seem to get a lot of people's backs up for some reason (in fact, one friend of mine regularly cites it as being among his most hated records ever for some reason ) I would have thought it could become an indemand tune for funk/soul minded people given the chance and I seem to remember it being from either '71 or '73 or thereabouts? Martin
  9. Added some more to the pot - I send an occasional list out by email so PM or email me if you would like to be added to my e-mailing list (to get it first before it goes on the web). Payment by cheque preferred, or paypal accepted subject to a 4% surcharge to cover their fees. P&P is extra- but reasonable. I post worldwide. 11. yes, and Pete promised to sell it to me, so I will report back when the deal is done
  12. two of my fave lyrics would have to be Roy Hamilton- the panic is on for an expression of sheer gut wrenching pain and Tony Clarke- They call me a wrong man for quality story telling I also think Karmello Brooks has a tremendous lyric as well...
  13. well continuing in my 'second hand gene with third hand gene information' mode, I'm pretty certain Gene said it was UK only. I can see a solid hit soul DJ punch up brewing over this one with Stuart in the imaginary US pressing corner, and Gene in the UK only corner. Dave will be refereeing and I will be ringing the bell. That'll be on February 19th btw. At Vivo. John Weston will be holding the round counter sign up, er, between rounds.
  14. well let me know when you get one
  15. ouch! Last one I saw listed was a lot more than that- seem to recall it being around 100, might have even been 150ukp.... now where's that Gene....
  16. this is one of Gene Robertson's favorites I do believe- where are you Gene???? Hang on: me, stuart and gene, vaguely involved in the same thread? I make that solid hit soul-o' clock? Martin www.solidhit.co.uk
  17. We have decided to go bi-monthly from February 2005, and we are delighted to have John Weston taking the guest slot for this, our third night at the wonderful Vivos in the heart of the City of London. Music Policy is dancefloor oriented northern soul blending classics with lesser played. Our aim is not to sacrifice quality for the sake of obscurity or rarity. We will be working to deliver fresh sounds including evergreens that you know, others you'd forgotten about and some we hope you'd like to get to know Something for the weekend sir or madam? indeed - try a trip to Solid Hit Soul!
  18. I remember giving this a few spins at These Old Shoes maybe five years back (not that I'm making any sort of claim on it ) It's an OK R&B dancer IMO, not expensive at maybe 10- 15 quid. I would imagine it's probably had some spins on the mod scene from the 80's onwards though I doubt if it's ever been 'big' or if it ever would be (not rare enough for starters ). Well worth a go though, and a refreshing change to many of the more hammered to death tunes (northern or R& . Martin
  19. couple of dollars I would have thought, 60's pop hit - no soul content (The Delmonas cover from the mid 80's was much better- no soul content there either!) Martin
  20. great latin jazz record, I particularly love the slow and sassy vocal version by 'queen of the organ' Shirley Scott on Impulse
  21. LOL, No I should stress that I'm not attempting to polish to make something knackered LOOK mint, I'm trying to remove the scratchy top layer to make it SOUND mint! Is the general consensus that it cannot be done? Because I HAVE heard otherwise, I just don't understand the nitty gritty of the process!
  22. I understand that it's possible to use T-Cut on very very knackered records - can anyone explain how this is done? I believe it takes off a thin layer of vinyl and therefore can remove or help to smooth a lot of scratches. I wouldn't dream of using this on a semi decent condition record (G or better in fact) as I also use washing up liquid, a natural sponge, and rinse in cold water etc. and this works great - but I have one particular moderately valuable record which I picked up cheap in a very very shagged state, and would be willing to try something more drastic to reduce the level of scratches already there as it is beyond 'wet cleaning'.... can anyone shine any light on this - I'm aware that it's probably almost sacriligious to even ask about this ???
  23. LOL very good, I like it
  24. oddly enough when scouring around for info on this a couple of weeks back I did notice that Manship had it for sale on his site for 500ukp and now it's gone Dunno if he has traded it or summat though rather than sold it??
