what is the defining meaning of 'rip-off'? again you pays yer money and takes yer choice! clear to see from label pics what you are getting, o.k. maybe seller should be a bit clearer by giving description e.g. original, boot, 're-issue, condition, whatever etc. etc. as not everyone is in the know as to what they are really buying. Freedom of selling + freedom of buying ...methinks ----- lets not get into the boring bootleg/reissue debate again..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I agree with Mark, someone somewhere has stacks of 'rare' stuff and keep drip feeding them onto ebay, pushing prices way up. Ebay seems to be setting the standard these days doesnt it. The other point of course is that the inflated prices of certain records does not reflect the fact that they are rare, but merely in-demand. Soon we will see a price drop in the Futures just as we have seen with the likes of Ace Spectum et al, although some listings still ask £75-£100 for the Ace Spectrum issue - come on! A classic example that comes up on lists and on ebay now and again is one of my all time fave tunes The Deadbeats 'No Second Chance', huge price (if I could afford £800 for the one on JD's list I would have bought it!), but just how 'rare' it? Can anyone tell me as there seems to be quite a few around - or at least appearing. Now where's me credit card!! Grant

brain ticking over heres a few more i can think of: dena barnes - if you ever walked out of my life/who am i (inferno) derek and ray - interplay/dragnet 67 (rca) doni burdick - candle/whatcha gonna do (soul king? - was that a boot or what? where did it come from?!!)

I WAS THE SAME IN THOSE DAYS DAVE, VERY GREEN! ALWAYS REFERRED TO BOOTS AS PRESSINGS

yeah saw the play last year and we also spotted a few post-wigan tunes (researcher slip-up?). anyway didnt really matter as the spirit of the thing was there and like u said the actors were brilliant, and it is a good and funny portrayal of those great time at the casino. well recommended, wish i'd go the chance to go and see it again when it re-visited manchester. they should make a 'made for tv film' at least of this paly!! grant

MIKE WASN'T INTENDED TO 'GROUP' THIS SITE WITH SOULCLUB OR ANY OTHER SITE, JUST INDICATING EXAMPLES THATS ALL. PERSONALLY AM A BIG FAN OF SOULCLUB AS ARE MANY OTHERS WHO 'VOICED' THEIR SUPPORT ON A RECENT FORUM HERE THE OTHER WEEK. GRANT

Cant answer that one Mikey - one for real radio ham that one! Most local stations are obviously run on a very tight budget, most being run voluntary. Allfm goes out every sun 4-6pm and the likes of myself and geoff allman take +2 hours out to host the show for ian and jeanette for nothing, basically because of our luv for the music and knowing that people are enjoying listening to a bit of soul every sunday afternoon. local stations couldnt afford to pay an artist £100 every time they play a record. You could realyy go deep and ask who pays any royalties to the artist when they are on websites e.g. soulclub, soul-source and so on. Be interested to hear if jazzfm pay royalties?? Good point mate, but radio 1 we ain't. atb Grant

chalky - Ginger guested on allfm radio show on sunday and brought along his copy of Antellects ' Love Slave' which he played- Nice mint copy, he paid a damn site more than what the rough one went for on ebay. The Antellects were apparently a rock band and 'Love Slave' is the B-Side. Grant

Prices on ebay are definitely affected by so-called current demand, or as Mikey rightly says 'in vogue'. Look at Sister James (N Tempo) for example, bit played out now but at the same time a good time to grab one of ebay as it is coming down in price. Then you look at stuff like Julian Covey 'A Little Bit Hurt', Ace Spectrum 'Dont Send Nobody Else' - go for good money on ebay, had both years back and couldnt give them away! I wont name names but some collectors are also charging exagerrated prices for stuff so you have to be careful. Look around before you buy but by all means dont leave it too late! My policy for ebay is that if I see a record on there I put in my maximum bid (the most I value the record at - or can afford at the time) - leave it alone and look at the ned of the auction - if i win great, if i dont then try again next time. No good sitting up til 4 in the morning. Or subscribe to Bidsnipe (but less fun). Grant

Sorry if this seems vague, but I used to have Lee Garrett 'I Cant Break The Habit' on Harthon (orange label). Someone played it the other day and it was on red & black Harton label. Now it's a while since I sold my orange copy but the version I heard the other day sounded different - is there 2 versions of the song? Anybody comment on the two labels? Anyone got an mp3 they could put on for me - it justs sounds a lot better now than when I had it a while back. Grant

Got in touch with Pat Brady again - apparently it is Rick Randall (or Randell) on MGM. Grant

Listened to the WIGAN TAPE with above record on it, Pat actualy announces it as Tony Middleton 'When I Was A Kid' surely must have been a c/up? certainly isnt the B Kennedy record - nuthin like! Anyone shed any more light? looks like pat needs to ask the audience!! Grant
-
I contacted Pat myself for you - he came back to me saying the following (pasted from my email):- Dear Grant I'll have to go on "who wants to be a millionaire" at this rate.....My starter for ten.....The record was Billy Kennedy on Silver Records. It was actually something that was released in the 70's that John Anderson found on a trip to Detroit around about 1978 though it is thought to have been a 60's track that was lying dormant in the vaults. Value-wise, around £50 I'd guess although you don't see it much. Hope that's of help Pat Well it aint the track I have on Wigan tape - so the one guest is after is probably the one i've got on tape as the tarck on www.soulclub.org. Mystery eh, i'll defo dig out the tape ! grant

Sorry Greg it was me - i had looged on earlier then logged out again when it came across me to post the w parker bit. Glad someone elso out there with a bit of taste.

REMEMBER THIS TRACK TOO, THINK I MIGHT HAVE IT ON AN OLD CRAPPY TAPE SOMEWHERE, RECORDED LATE 70'S AT CASINO IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME RIGHT. POSSIBLY WAS C/UP AT THE TIME BY PAT BRADY? IT WAS A GREAT SONG, JUST LISTENED TO THE LINK KOLLA LEFT FOR B KENNEDY & NO IT ISNT THAT, MORE UPTEMPO DANCER TYPICAL OF THAT TIME. I'LL TRY AND DIG IT OUT & P[OST UP WHO PAT SAYS IT BIS ON THE TAPE, MIGHT THEN JOG A FEW MEMORIES. OR AS PREVIOUSLY PHONE OR EMAIL PAT BRADY (DETAILS AVAILABLE ON HIS WEBSITE) AS HE IS USUALLY VERY HELPFUL WITH QUERIES LIKE THIS - PARTCULARLY IF HE HAS ONE FOR SALE!! HAPPY HUNTING GRANT P.S. COULD BE THE B-SIDE OF THAT ELUSIVE LEGENDS TRACK I AM AFTER (LOL)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no way mate does it cost $67 postage for a 45 from the states, usually they charge about $5-$6 for shipping, max i have paid is priority air mail $10 - depends on which part of the states it is. some do try it on for the xtra few dollars but you cant complain at that, but $67?!! r u sure you have read it right and that it doesnt say $6 - $7 dollars. postage costing more than the record - bollocks. i'd tell him to shove it, but as the other posters say be careful with -ve feedback as there may be reprisals. get in touch with him mate and sort it out amicably (if that fails tell him to **** off!) grant p.s. it would be cheaper to fly gladys knight and her pips over to the uk to sing it live to you!

anna i have a copy but it isnt brilliant, but watchable, think sound goes now and again on it. u r welcome to borrow it grant

Oddly enough Mikey, I didnt get asked for Tainted Love on Friday, but i did get asked for Reet Petite. I am polite though in apologising that I didnt bring it with me!Still if the Tainted Loves keep the floor happy, then play them but problem is as i find with my spot (last hour! also known as 'the bars shut now so lets dance, go and ask for 9 times out of 10 hour!'(LOL),that once you play one of them you get swamped with requests for these type of tunes - they dont want to listen to anything else, then u get earache of the real soulies who obviously want to hear the 'other' stuff. Keep 'em happy Grant

KICKING OFF MY SPOT AT STOCKPORT GUILD HALL ON FRIDAY WITH CHUCK JACKSON 'ALL OVER THE WORLD 12", ONE OF THE PISSED UP MORONS CAME UP TO (SORRY STUMBLED UP TO) THE DECKS & ASKED IF I COULD PLAY SOME NORTHERN!! THE FUNNY THING IS, HALF AN HOUR LATER I WAS PLAYING A REQUEST 'INTERPLAY' DEREK AND RAY AND THE SAME PLONKER CAME UP TO THE DECKS TO SEE WHAT IT WAS AS HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT BEFORE!!! I GIVE UP!! THE LADS KNOWLEDGE OF 'NORTHERN' OVERWHELMED ME...WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? STILL ALL THE FUN OF DJING I SUPPOSE. BY THE WAY THE WAY THERE WASNT A SPACE TO BE HAD ON THE DANCEFLOOR WHEN THE CJ TRACK WAS ON!!

Any chance of putting the Legends track on CD or audio cassette for me as I only have it on a crappy sounding Wigan tape! Grant

Does anyone know if this is the same Chesterfields that recorded the excellent 'You Walked Away' on Phillips? Grant

THATS RIGHT GENE, DON'T THINK THE INSTRUMENTAL (WHICH IMO IS THE BEST VERSION) WAS EVER BOOTED. I REMEMBER THE DOUBLE SIDE VOCAL FROM THE LATE 70'S.
