  1. If you use Firefox as your internet browser then download this plug in. It allows you to save video files from youtube(and other sites) https://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11327_7-6555399-2.html
  2. Ray Charles in the late 50's blended gospel and RnB to create a new sound. Georgia on my mind is still a classic standard.
  3. At the risk of repetition PW was a big influence on the Midlands NS scene in the early 70's. He DJ'd at the Locarno in Cov but it was NOT a disco night, soul thru and thru. PW used to do a Northern night on a Thursday in an upstairs room in a pub in Warwick! The pub name escapes me for now but this was a top night As already stated he promoted his own NS club, the Treetops. Those who attended will remember it with awe. Check out early Blues and Soul for his jokey ads, usually at the bottom of a page, cus he couldn't afford anything else! IMHO a lot of the successful venues now are modelled on the PW formula. He was also one of the first promoters to bring the original acts over from the USA. To most he probably appears as some one who sold out. In the early 70's he was a beacon in the transitional period between Tamla, Funk, disco and NS. Apologies for waxing lyrical but this guy has more than paid his dues and deserves the success he has achieved. Still one of my fave DJ's after 35 years. Even now he could show some of the 'pretenders' a thing or two behind the decks.
  4. Agree with that. Pete was (is?) very knowledgeable. Pete used to run a record shop in Coventry and also the Coventry TreeTops night club. First saw JJ Barnes there in the mid 70's.
  5. Sophies Choice is an Oscar winning film from the early 80's starring Meryl Streep. You may well now decide to watch so I'll try not to spoil it. She also has to make a depressing decision! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084707/
  6. Once again you are coreect Pete. As I remember it was dropped fairly quickly. Dire (or any other 4 letter word) sums it up. A Wigan low.
  7. The Temps just get it on a photo finish for me. But this is really a 'Sophies Choice' thread
  8. Well I'm on JD so between us we will probaly talk a load of sphericals. No change there for me
  9. That surprised me - I'd have said Jimmy Raye or Lynn Vernando. Any advances?
  10. Just out of interest what do you think the reaction would be if Johnny Williams got played out again? I've just dug it out and been giving it a few spins. I have to be honest and say I'd forgoten how good this is.
  11. Johhny Williams
  12. Nothing but blue skies Still get the goose bumps with this one.
  13. Carl Carlton was 12 when he went to Golden World. https://soulfuldetroit.com/web07-golden%20w...arl-carlton.htm Found this link really informative on Carl. https://www.answers.com/topic/carl-carlton

Sorry Karen but I just seem to knock what you have been posting lately. It's not personal - honest! I Just Can't Help Myself is the best of a bad bunch. The rest can stay where they belong, in obscurity. No soul, passion or feel good factor IMHO. Is this typical crossover - No way!

It's 2/3rds down the page. But I've pasted in. RARE Kansas City Funk n Soul Big ups to my man DJ SuperWolf aka James Trotter a native of Miami, Fl who came to KC via New York and never left. All my knowledge of KC soul music comes from him. The first cut is hands down one of my fav funk/soul cuts ever. The Curtis Liggins Indication "What It Is" became a Northern Soul staple, in the mid-west mr. Liggins and his Indication were a regional success touring and releasing a handfull of singles and preparing a full length when a car accident cut the stars life short. This cut and Liggins vocal stylings owe worlds to another Curtis, Mr. Mayfield that is. But the bubbling bass in the background and the driving drums keep the pulse rollicking and keep the listner smiling and dancing. God Bless this track.

I know people who really rate this but I'm afraid it doesn't do it for me. Some more info here. https://ozgood.typepad.com/a_damn_shame/music/index.html under the RARE Kansas City Funk n Soul section. Mick
  18. Hi Mark, I've had the pleasure of seeing you DJ and listening to your show. From my perspective I don't think you have any need to swallow humble pie. I've just found its so refreshing to see people getting together and supporing a worthwhile cause. This is what makes the scene. I'll donate or support a venue. The venue option (full credit to Jo) just makes so much sense to me. Whatever route we go down I'm still convinced you will remain on air. Cheers
  19. More support the better! I'm now convinced this will work out after reading all the other posts. I'll see you in September if not before. Tabs
  20. Hi Gary, IMO there are merits for both types of funding but donations could be variable and a few months down the line the same situation could exist. Now little-stevie has offered a venue free of charge the revenue could secure the longer term. Just my thoughts. Are you going to Stoke next Saturday? I could be persuaded to buy you a pint
  21. I think Jo's idea is bang on. If we can't get 100 + to support a venue for something like this we might as well all give up. The appeal to me is we can raise a lot of money in one hit which secures the longer term. And when it's successful it could be an annual event to ensure the Soul Shack never closes!!
  22. But no relation to The Jackson 5 Also forgot to add Aretha and Erma Franklin.
  23. I was going to say that Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding and Percy Sledge spring immediately to my mind.
  24. Nice tune, actually on Mayfield records. A strong Motown influence to say the least.
