  1. I've been following this thread for some time, but really enough is enough. I'd have had ABSOLUTELY no involement from any national media. 1) TOTP - Wigans Chosen Few - The name is offensive enough without listening / watching the garbage. Who The F*** chose them . It certainly wasn't me or anyone I spoke to at the time. Just how insulting a name is that without any reference to the original acts involved? 2) The Sunday Times article is condescending beyond belief. Another orchestrated attempt to mass market and pigeon hole British youth in the 70's. 3) England Our England - A distorted, politically biased view from the 70's that in reality had no relevance to the scene. Did anyone really care if you were employed in a steel works or had a "profession"? The friends I made judged me as me, not on a media stereotype. I accept some ' trippers' remained on the scene but is is it really coincidental that the media intrest resulted in a dumbing down. (name your own sh*te recod here). The absence of any media involvement would have resulted today in a more cohesive scene. This is of course IMHO. Mick Macca The widespread abuse of barbiturates at one point back in the late 70's. I saw some shocking scenes on that front. Agreed.
  2. Not as easy as it sounds but Male = Jackie Wilson Female = Barbara Lynn
  3. Heard exactly the same comment and cover version at about 9.00 pm At which point I went to my village local. I support CIN but do these comperes realise what they are saying? Such a shame that the original artists are once again ignored. (Despite the criticism still hope CIN make mega bucks)
  4. Just ask him / her if you can collect the record and pay cash. The answer will tell you all you need to know.!
  5. Superb LP. Every track a winner .
  6. Four Larks - Another Chance -Tower. Just pure class.
  7. You could always create your own discs. Never done it myself but the link might be worth a look. https://www.mtu.com/basics/karaoke-home-producer.htm
  8. Seven Souls - I still love you. George Blackwell -Can't lose my head.
  9. Group = Flirtations Solo artist = Bobby Sheen.
  10. Back to the original topic my 4 overplayed (but still great) records are: Dana Valery - You don't know where your interest lies. Johnny Caswell - You don't love me anymore Eddie parker - I'm gone Rita and the Tiara's - Gone with the wind
  11. A subculture is a group of people with different behavior and beliefs that distinguish them from the larger culture of which they are a part. So NS is a sub culture. A very profound thread
  12. 'Will Things Be Better When We Die' Not for me it won't In all seriousness there are merits for all the arguments I've seen. However in the UK it is very apparent that without 'new blood' the scene will eventually disappear. In the last 5 months I've been to Cleethorpes, Stoke, Northampton, Bisley, Luton, Northampton, Wellingborough and more and the average age is probably 40 - 45. Its inevitable that as time progresses there will be less people around. I know when I was ( a lot ) younger I would never want to go to a place where the people were the same age as my parents!! Comments about handbaggers etc will only further put newcomers off. Unless attitudes change and there is an acceptance of all types of soul then certainly here in the UK I cannot see the scene surviving. Essentially it is still an underground scene with only a minority appeal.
  13. You are right this is an irrelevant debate. "The thrust of my argument is that I believe no one has the right to retrospectively redefine what Soul music is" Who is trying to redefine it? Very presumptious to assume people are trying to alter history. You answered yourself in your original post, 'Soul music simply evolved'. Its really a question of personal choice which style of soul music you prefer.
  14. Hi Linda, Thanks for the overview of the Popcorn scene. Its something I did not really know about or understand. After listening to Dave Howard,(again) in case I was too harsh the first time, I have to say this is not for me. (And thats polite ) Each to there own but this leaves me cold. If this is soul (and that was the q in the original post) then as the shepherd said 'Lets get the flock out of here' Cheers Mick
  15. I don't think any one said only Northern soulies are allowed to pay silly money for records. My take it was advertised as a NS record when clearly it wasn't. It could well be a rare Popcorn record but the question in the topic line was "is it really soul?"
  16. Not to my ears.
  17. A DVD has vob files on it. You will need to convert the flv files to DVD compliant mpeg and then author / burn to DVD. Cheers
  18. Johnnie Mae Mathews - Lonely You'll Be
  19. I stand to be corrected but I always thought he was trying to promote a new dance craze. Like The Duck, The Monkey, Watusi, Harlem Shufffe and 1000's of others. ATB Mick
  20. Billy Woods - Let me make you happy
  21. Jimmy Raye - Philly dog around the world.
  22. To everyone who has recieved their copies thanks so much for the kind e-mails. Thanks for everyone who has sent me a DVD or CD in return. They are all absolutely superb, without exception. Forget the back biting on the scene. This to me is what it is all about. Cheers Mick
  23. Simple answer is yes.
  24. That could be the nicest thing anyone has said about me if I knew what Philanthropist meant . I have no problem with the pist part though!! It has always struck me as very strange why the Soul Train series was never released. Surely there is a market for it? Anyway glad you recieved it OK. ATB. Mick
