Rare and Northern are interchangeable within this scene imo. But rare was definitely the term before northern was coined. Like a lot of others I find the tag Northern Soul embarrassing. It was always rare soul that people travelled for. Listening to new sounds that couldn't be heard elsewhere. Shame that original ethos doesn't seem to apply any longer for a lot of people. Each to their own I suppose. It's all rare soul music.
