  1. Go on tell us, and I may be able to tell you if there is a reason for its rarity, or even better, you can tell me the number and it may be one of the missing ones in the discography.

Really sad. Alongside his brother he was an absolute master! Dean
  3. Tony As you know I trust your musical instincts implicitly, but here you are just plain wrong. Two great records - and Secret Love a great dancer - and his version of 'Fly Me To The Moon' as well. Absolute winner! Now dig out your Disco Gold LPs please! Dean
  4. Bob that list hasn't been updated for a while despite me giving him a big list of additions. I've got a more complete list PM me your email and I will send it to you. Dean
  5. I thought you were being a bit harsh there Bob but the guy can't even get his hip hop history correct - samplers weren't a tool at the birth of hip hop - so we can see where his depth of knowledge lies. On the break, I think the reason that no-one has gotten any money from this sample is because no one can get the owners of Metromedia to care about clearing the thing. And on the question of people losing out on samples, it's also worth remembering the musicians who really did earn from it. I know many artists who have had unexpected retirement bonuses when they've found themselves looped up on an international best seller.
  6. Re the Unity release: Can't be because it was released without permission in the first place. Shouldn't be because it's sub-standard.

  8. Candi Staton The Complete Fame Records Recordings And so it begins, for the past five years Ace and Kent have been working towards a deal with Rick Hall's Fame Records and studio to release their catalogue, whilst for the past year we have been working in the Muscle Shoals studio transferring masters. This will result in a series of astounding releases the first of which is Candi Staton: The Complete Fame Recordings. This includes all 48 tracks that she recorded for Fame Records between late 1968 and early 1974 when she signed to Warner Brothers. 22 of these tracks have never been CD before, and of those 12 are previously unreleased. These include the indemand dancer 'One More Hurt', 'Do Right Man' an insanely good slice of southern sister funk and her take on Donnie Fritt's 'We Had It All', which is southern soul at its very deepest. It comes with a stunning 20 page booklet full of previously unseen photos and rare European picture sleeves. 9. Snowboy has been blasting it from a Carver at Madame Jo Jo's along with the unreleased Contours track 'See Saw' I think from the Contours comp.
  10. shocking stuff. Tony Rounce and I were only there in January, interviewing George Jackson and Harrison Calloway in the studio. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Stuart, Tommy and all the lovely people who made us so welcome. D
  11. Well that would make an Audiodisc acetate less likely to be genuine.
  12. I can't see anything here that points to this being a fake - although nothing that confirms it is an original either. Acetates could well be cut at any time in the recording place - the studio where it was recorded for instance, and in that case a to hand blank from a manufacturer would be used. Audiodisc acetates would have been used all over the country. Liberty's own labels would probably have been used at the mastering stage. The 'remix' mentioned above will have been to donate the mix used by the mastering engineer when cutting the master. Does anyone know where Yuro recorded this.
  13. Either ask away, contact myself, Tony Rounce or Ady Croasdell by PM, or email us at the Ace website Kris. Dean
  14. I think it can still be said to be Ady's discovery. Ady tipped me off to its existence, and I ordered it up. He then played it - that clip from Jazz FM is I think from 2003. It got several plays at the hundred club where it was given a resounding shrug of the shoulders by the masses. It may have been lost in the rush of unreleased tracks that Ady was trying to work through. I seem to remember giving him several DAT's worth of music at the time. And there is only so much that one man can do!
  15. Hi Sean I'm afraid I wouldn't believe it. Mainly because it wasn't. It was ordered up from Capitol by my good self when I was consultant for Blue Note and for the relaunch of Stateside. It was found in the Capitol archive in Los Angeles. I was put onto it, and a list of other stuff by Ady. This must have been about 1999 or 2000. And whilst it's a good LA stomper, it's essentially a rewrite and inferior version of 'A Lil Lovin Sometimes' isn't it? Dean
  16. Really respecting someone's views by accusing them of making a quick buck. Especially someone like Gary, who has dedicated more of his time to uncovering rare soul than almost anyone on this site. No one who spends their time treking around the States searching out rare records and masters is making a quick buck. And if, whilst working on his releases Gary finds something that's in demand he has an absolute duty to himself, the owner of the work and the artist to make it as available as possible. As proven by those who complained about us not making some of the Sounds Of Memphis tracks available that means on vinyl as well as CD. Without the likes of Gary, Ady, Tony and others digging out some of the finest undiscovered recordings of the last few years, the rare soul scene would be a far poorer place. And if after being played out for three or four years by Butch and others Tommy and the Derby's is still under-exposed that's probably already quite a poor place.
  17. That's the one I think, though I remember the burns being more prominent. The 'Everything You Wanted' session was produced by Dan Greer with arrangements by Gene Page, and was for an album, however none of the masters exist, so we have to presume that apart from the four tracks released as singles, they have gone for ever. As I'm pretty sure is Mr Roberts, in answer to the opening question. Dean
  18. Recorded mostly in Memphis, I think Stan Kesler told me he was from the Muscle Shoals area, which was where he discovered him. The full story is in the Kent CD 'Can't Be Satisfied The Sounds Of Memphis Story'. 'Everything You Want To Know About Love' was recorded in LA. He was a white guy with some top sideburns in the one picture that we have. Dean
  19. I don't understand. They've all been available on CD to anyone who wants to buy them since the summer, so they are available to the general scene, and if the scene wants to ignore them because they are on CD, then they have to wait til we can bring them out on 7inch, which is next month.
  20. For sale both mint Florida Spiritulaires - I Remember When (Ernies Record Mart) £55 Tobias Wood Henderson - Color Blind Man (Pulsar) £25 Postage in the UK £1.50
  21. That's the game he's in I guess. Gilles' name sells records, and he gets paid a lot of money to put those things together for that reason. Also he knows his stuff, and is simply the best DJ I have ever seen play in a club. His sets at Dingwalls in the late 80s are to me what Searling at Wigan, or Levine & Curtis at Blackpool are to many of the people on this board. But yes that is digression.
  22. Took me 13 years to find out what it was after I heard Peterson play it at the WAG in the late 80s, it then took me another five years to find it. Turned out Peterson was playing Piller's copy and I just needed to mention it to him!
  23. Absolutely! Many great tracks on LPs from that time. That Ralphie Robles is fanatastic. Do you know the Pete Bonet album on Swinger, 'Puerto Rican Soul' from that album is a monster.
  24. Without looking it up I can't be sure. But the Harvey ran to at least 200 promos printed, and that's before the number of issue copies. Valentin was earlier, not aimed at the soul market, and apart from a couple of titles Gold Fania 45s really didn't sell very many at all. I also have the impression that Harvey has turned up fairly regularly in the past decade - no doubt helped by Harvey selling anything between 50 & 100 in the middle part of the last decade. Bobby Valentin has hardly turned up at all until the weeks that have followed the high price on Manship's auction. Surely if three copies have gone for this price, that is what it's worth. But if not, I'll happily pay £250 for a mint copy.
