  1. really good records (versus ones that just sound good a few times) stand up to many repeat plays. That's why the "we need to keep this 45 exclusive or it ruins the scene" thing seems silly to me.
  2. my copy is the totally worn copy on popsike, but i didn't buy it on ebay and it passed through a few people's hands (including andy dyson's) before I got it edit: please bump and listen to my more recent radio show, it's awesome...
  3. have you seen the westbound on vinyl? i've only ever seen it on styrene whereas all the soulhawk releases are vinyl at least. i know that it still could be a better mastered or cut press and that styrene sounds better than vinyl when it's not messed up, but i'd still rather have it on vinyl. the flip is better though.
  4. I have not seen a copy but I have seen info from it and know someone who knows the author and I guess there is an insane amount of information. the author went through company files and contracts of okeh and other labels to get his information about group membership, etc.
  5. she sounds like a country singer. the production is much better but she's got nothing on barbara lewis imo.
  6. you're thinking of martha reeves
  7. I don't know the story or his real name but i'm pretty sure it's the same person and this record was the first version.
  8. tons of typos on records. it's not like they intentionally tried to credit the wrong person. if someone on the phone says "monk", which is an unusual name, it's not surprising that someone might mishear it (or it might get miswritten somewhere else down the line) as "mark".
  9. I didn't even understand until recently how anyone could think that "soul music" existed past the early 80s (besides a few odd indie throwback things). It was interesting to recently learn that a radio station in the UK pretty much created a genre by pulling together different musics from the US (almost none of which locally would refer to themselves as "soul music") into a sort of coherent genre. Anyways, from my perspective in the US, "soul music" is stronger than ever before. More and more people are making soulful music of different types (for example, my friend's "Cherries" label is making new boogie-type music, who would have thought anyone would have done that?). More mainstream music is influenced by soul. More local soul events in the US (multiple ones in most big cities) are happening and more younger people are getting into the music and even collecting 45s. Even "funk" collectors, who pretty much dead ended into buying vaguely funky white psychedelic folk, are now buying sweet soul 45s. UK style northern soul events and blues and soul were never part of my world.
  10. nice. this one might also be listed as #400, based on the other number, and that would fill in the 400 series. I wonder if the 1002 has another number on it?
  11. actually the question you are asking about local / national releases is exactly the type of thing that has been done ad nauseum in the OVO threads and the type of thing I meant to cut off. Again, I'm not saying you're asking an unreasonable question, but there's a big history here. I see you joined in 2004 but don't post a lot, I don't know if you saw all the drama. I'm not trying to discourage you from posting in general, I appreciate it. If you just wanted to ask which was the pressing order of the different label designs of this, that would be a fair question imo. Not trying to censor you, just please look at those threads, they pretty much address every possible permutation of every how-many-angels-can-fit-on-the-head-of-a-pin type of question you can ask and they overall had a very negative effect on the forum. Thanks.
  12. i have a different sort order set than you. do you have the howard guyton verve 45 to compare? it's not the jaywalkers version.
  13. the last acetate is the song done by howard guyton on verve and the jay walkers on selsom. i don't actually own the howard guyton 45 to compare (and only the known side is on youtube) but it might be the same as the guyton record.
  14. this is the 8" acetate. it's different than the released version, maybe a demo of the song?
  15. are you talking about the emotions? it sounds just like the emotions on vardan / lovers on gate / phillips. i didn't compare closely to see if there were slight differences. but it's essentially a released track. great record.
  16. so red and yellow tams are the same version, correct? I think I misread the 2009 thread initially.
  17. He was initially a kiddie james brown impersonator. There was some pretty excellent footage from a tv show (not sure what) where he was 6 years old and doing JB, it was on youtube for a while.
  18. Trolling (or joking) post deleted, to prevent another thread from going down in flames... sludge7, you probably were innocently joking but if you go back and read the zillions of OVO threads, it's not a good idea.
  19. motown collectibles are some of the only "northern" records that have significantly dropped in price over the years. like they are super high in the soussan guide. i think the globalization of the market really hits items that were pressed in large quantities.
  20. people always tend to say the rarer press is the "first", true or not. you can get a clue by looking at the deadwax of the two presses. Is it identical? If not, are there slight differences? Even if "identical", you might get clues as to which stamper was more worn.
  21. I don't have an opinion on the actual transaction as I was not involved but the pricing comment in your post is funny: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Northern-Soul-Funk-LU-PAUL-BRIAN-on-JANUS-/360551473898?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item53f28ae2ea https://www.ebay.com/itm/ULTIMATE-CHOICE-My-Bodys-Hot-Pt-I-II-45-M-US-1982-disco-funk-orig-Heat-2010-/190688738856?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item2c65ef3e28 https://www.ebay.com/itm/ULTIMATE-CHOICE-My-Bodys-Hot-soul-vinyl-45-/350449778153?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item51986f3de9
  22. the guy might be an a-hole but he didn't violate any policies or rip you off
  23. I have no idea but one thing that is commonly true is that things that are common in the UK are not necessarily common at all in the US because what's common in the UK are whatever load of records happened to be exported.
  24. I was wrong. This is the copy I own: https://www.ebay.com/itm/TERRY-CALLIER-SOUL-FUNK-R-B-45-ORDINARY-JOE-GOLDEN-CIRCLE-OF-YOUR-LOVE-/120902734777?ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:US:3160&nma=true&si=Ry6WI%2F8BMgKmoN651nJA2BMDuvI%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 the white label threw me, as it makes it look much different than the colored version. Sorry.
  25. i don't own look at me now. didn't realize it was a rarity, i will dig it out and scan it later.
