  1. The chicago intensions (with an s) are from the west side of chicago, and are different from the mandells, who are also from the west side of Chicago. The carpets are from kansas city. Just filling in some details. There's no st. louis involved. Thanks.
  2. ok, sorry. can you post a soundclip of the perfect love so I've heard it?
  3. The guy singing lead on the flip is Terry Thompson, cousin of Marshall of the Chilites, by the way
  4. I was going to bid on that Marlynns but it just went to high. One thing that's funny about the record is that he had it listed as "male group harmony" or something like that, but it's a WOMAN singing lead on the record. The woman is Sheryl Henry, later lead of the south shore commission (singing 'we're on the right track'). There's a guy singing lead on the flip, though.
  5. that is not true (it's not a previously unreleased recording). It is the track "sure as the stars shine" that got released on 3rd world. they may have thought it was previously unreleased but it's not. The 3rd world 45 is worth about $300, funk collectors look for it for the other side. Actually, I'm just saying this, as I haven't heard the version on the kent cd, but it's likely that they just got the "sure as the stars shine" cut (which sounds like it's titled perfect love) and released it as "previously unreleased". If someone has a clip from the kent CD, I will listen and confirm whether or not it is the same.
  6. yes, I was the first person to make that point, I was asking if you were disagreeing, I guess not. ps. i get confused reading your posts, I think they're by me!
  7. are you trying to imply that they're not second issues?
  8. thanks a lot
  9. this used to be around, it usually comes as an avco promo with the same song "take my hand" on both sides. It's much harder to get with the flip (which is actually a crappy ballad, and I collect sweet soul but I still prefer the "take my hand side"). It took me a while to get it with the flip, I guess the promos have also dried up now too.
  10. I play it near the start of this radio show: www.sittinginthepark.com/4-15-2007.mp3
  11. he told me one of the movies got shown on telemundo so i guess they're popular to some extent. i will ask around at maxwell street, i think there's always a few dvd vendors.
  12. as long as we're posting scans, here is a scan of my copy of the odd label on one of the twilights 45s. The other twilights just has the orange label with the rounded logo:
  13. awesome, I knew you might be the person to ask about mexican records, but I never got a chance to email you. Any idea where to get the movies he mentions? Those sound awesome.
  14. based on the voice, it has to be the moments or ray goodman brown, but I don't know the tune
  15. yours is original, the harthon original vs. bootleg (I think it might be a legit reissue) he's describing is on the volcanos, preludes, and a few other releases where the original is red with the harthon logo and the bootleg is orange with just a straight "harthon." The bernard williams is not one of those, it's originally orange with the round harthon you have. The twilights "shipwrecked" is another release like the one you have (the other twilights 45 has a totally different, sort of interesting, harthon logo).
  16. Carltons are DC, one of the members was James Diggs, of the Knight Brothers
  17. that's an interesting comment just because all 3 groups you're describing are from DC, must just be the DC sound you're hearing
  18. part of the issue is that I would never post a question about an item I was looking at on a public auction or list because I would draw attention to it! I suspect it would mainly be a forum for people who already got screwed and just wanted to confirm it.
  19. I'm back with another interview, this time with Jimmy Mayes, about his band Mill Street Depot (who cut records on Port, FM, Shout, Stang, Gerim, Depot, and several other labels). His records probably have more funk and modern interest than northern, but he has an extremely interesting story that touches many different musicians across different states. For example, he was a member of the Kansas City Playboys and the Carvettes, and Jimi Hendrix was a member of his band before becoming famous. He even cut records in Mexico and scored and appeared in a couple of Mexican films. The interview is the last one at: www.sittinginthepark.com/interviews.html thanks, Bob
  20. I'm so suspicious of buying from random people in the UK (just because there's so many bootlegs floating around) that I bought a record that was not a bootleg once (moovers "someone to fulfill my needs") and sent it back because the label looks fake and there's no deep city logo, I recently found out it was real. And if I buy from a "real" dealer I end up paying 5 times what I consider a fair price. It's a lose-lose situation. It would be the same issue if I were buying doowop in the US I guess.
  21. yes, definitely a chicago recording artist, I agree, I was just adding more detail
  22. Derek, I think the Dontee, Pouland, and dc int'l groups are the same, so they had 4 records.
  23. He's actually a St. Louis guy, he got started with Fontella Bass on Oliver Sain's revue.
  24. I'm pretty sure Maurice Dollison is Cash McCall and NOT Monk Higgins.
  25. I always really liked this track, and I even like the group funk flip (sleepwalking) a lot.
