what is the numbers 45? Does it have a group side? Thanks
-
Here is one of the antennas photos I have (I ended up getting a glossier copy later but can't find it right now to scan): Billy is the guy all the way on the left. George is the guy to the right of Shirley. The group was an older group, they were performing in different acts in the 50s. Jimmy Bailey (one of the other members) told me that he wrote fugi-yama mama based on having a girlfriend when he was stationed in Japan during the Korean war (which is a funny reason to write a vaguely offensive novelty song).

I always thought One in a Million was also fantastic, one of those records that I think people will eventually pick up on, driving up the value.

it works now, thanks. the promatics is strange, is it the same as the regular brown door but just pressed at a slower speed? I know at least one other thing like that that comes on the same label but with one version pressed at the wrong speed.

lotusland had copies, which is where most of them came from. this is the same group as gents and the ladies on hue, "i can feel the tears" is the same recording as gents and the lady. Memphis I think.

I have a couple of Antennas photos I got from one of the members (so you can see Billy back and the day with his brother george). I will try to post a scan when I get home from work. Thanks.

Clay was Don Clay. There were a bunch of Chicago - NY connections at the time, for example, the Opals and the Dontells had records out on Beltone. There are TWO George McGregors. The George McGregor on Twinight was Billy's brother. He was also a member of the Antennas / Squires. He is deceased. The DETROIT George McGregor who wrote and produced a lot of records (for example, the Gaslight 45s) is Billy's cousin. He is still alive and was recently posting to the soulfuldetroit forums.

Hi Rich. He has a 2nd flash 45 (which isn't good) and a 45 on USA with Doris Young. He also wrote a ton of records for many people. He lives in the suburbs just south of Chicago. He's a very nice guy. He was originally in the group the Antennas on Clay, who are the same group as Shirley and the Squires on Constellation and who back Perk Lee "the docks" on Boss. They somehow are NOT the squires on boss, though (think the label did something funny). He went solo after writing "mr shy" which was originally supposed to be a song for Ruby Andrews -- Don Clay convinced Billy to record it himself. I'm deseperately trying to get a copy of Shirley and the Squires on Constellation, obviously to collect but also to record for three of the group members. If anyone has a copy to sell or even just record for me please get in touch. thanks, Bob

Hi Chalky. A few clips also don't play for me, there is a different play icon than the one on the ones that work ... when I hit it it changes to a pause icon but clips still don't play.

This record sold for 761 pounds recently on JM's auction. I'm not trying to get that kind of money but I'm trying to raise money to buy an $800 record. So if you offered me 400 pounds I would stop taking offers and I'd sell it immediately to you, but I'm open to any offers. I'd like to get offers of at least $400 (which is less than 200 pounds) but will listen to anything, you won't offend me but I might say no. Record is nice and clean, M-. It has a minor edge warp that I first noticed while playing it. Guaranteed not to affect play on your turntable, if it does you can send it back (or can send it back for some other reason if you want). My ebay user id is boba. if you want to check my feedback there. Here is an audio clip: wendellwestern.mp3 here is a scan: thanks, Bob

What The Eck Is That? Real Or Boot? Never Seen That Before
boba replied to Quinvy's topic in Look At Your Box
I think the 'blue' one is probably the same very dark green one that you had. I have one of them too and I think it is dark greenish blue. I think a difference in the scanning created a difference in the appearance. Thanks. -
Yeah, it's more common as a demo. Here is a radio show where I play the "i'm so glad" side (sorry i'm at work now and can't edit out the cut or record the 45 for you). Prime cut is the 3rd to last song (so skip to near the end), I can pm you the playlist if you want the whole thing. Thanks. www.sittinginthepark.com/6-24-2007.mp3

I think early 70s (I know the sweet soul side at least and it sounds early 70s), don't know the northern side
-
Prime Cut "message to the ghetto" is a pretty good group funk cut. The record isn't very rare, I think I even have a double if you really want a copy. The really good prime cut cut came out on polydor -- I'm so glad is excellent sweet soul (the other side is "hey pearl" I think). It is much harder to find.

Thanks everybody for the info, I must have just not noticed it before if it comes up for sale ocassionally. Anyone have a sound clip? Also (I know this sounds like a stupid question to most people here), if no one has a sound clip, can anyone tell me if there's a backing group singing behind Karen and if it's male or female? Thanks.

Anyone know this? Artist is Karen Striblin: https://cgi.ebay.com/NORTHERN-SOUL-45-KAREN...1QQcmdZViewItem

this is awesome footage this also reminds me of this video I saw once. My friend and I were at the house of one of the Sons of Slum. He pulls out a video tape of actual performance footage of them from the 70s. It was awesome, they were wearing all sorts of ridiculous psychedelic clothing. The thing was, though, that it was transferred too fast so they were flailing around ridiculously. Also, there was no audio on the original film so he put audio of what he claimed was "music from the time" onto the video. When he put it in, Tears For Fears "Shout" was playing over the psychedelic guys flailing around, it was like one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I know of its existence but I've never seen it before or heard it. It was on a want list I posted here before, I wanted to collect it for the label. Hopefully it turns out to be good too, though. There are a few very hard records on Clarence Johnson labels (lock, lovelite, quality sound, red balloon, etc.).

Ask the seller what shipping method he is using. Airmail is $6-7. But global express mail, which is the only way to get a tracking number, starts at $21 and can go higher. As a seller I would never ship an item that expensive without a tracking number (but I would state that upfront in the auction and I actually usually pay shipping on items that high). It is lame for a seller to spring that on you.

I don't think I'm the person with the reading comprehension problem. You seem to think I'm giving you advice or something. You made a comment on a public forum about how if something plays on your turnable, it's obviously an equipment problem with the buyer. That is a ridiculous comment (especially not knowing at the time what your turntable is, although I'm not sure that even makes a difference). I don't know why you seem to think responding to your ridiculous, incorrect public statement has anything to do with offering you some sort of advice on your situation. ps. sorry I again forgot to ask for your permission to respond to your post. Next time I will only respond to posts where the poster says, "Bob, please give me advice".

thanks, I've never seen that one. I have the tonight's the night lp and it's pretty discoey (but I haven't listened to it in a long time so I might have missed something).

there are two combinations on arc-lark, Scott. No connection to the RCA group (someone asked below). I recently asked if it was the Kimtone group and people responded saying that was Atlanta, so I think no connection to the Kimtone either. Thanks.
-
Sorry, next time I will ask you in advance whether it is acceptable to respond to your comment on a public thread. Maybe I should in the future send you a certified letter asking for permission to respond to a ridiculous comment? Please advise. Thanks.

I can make most any record play on some crap turntable with 3 grams, that doesn't make it the fault of the equipment when it jumps! If there is some physical defect in the record -- a warp or a scratch -- that your equipment ignores, it still doesn't mean that it's not a problem with the record when it skips somewhere else. The fact is people have different grading standards. If the person sends it back to you and it comes back as you sent it, the person is OBVIOUSLY being honest. They didn't intentionally buy it just to waste their own time and end up with nothing more than they started with. Obviously they could be trying to rip you off too. But you don't know that until you do or don't get the record back. I don't know you or your grading so I can't comment, but most records I buy from people off this site are WAY overgraded (although there are some people here I know who are more conservative graders than me). I am definitely not the more conservative grader either. Thanks.

Isn't it called "tonight's the night"? or is there another one?
