  1. Are you saying you went to his store or looked at his personal collection? He says in the auction that his personal collection (which is up for sale) is different from what was in his store. I've never dealt with him so I don't know the details.
  2. how did Chingy end up on that list?
  3. I think he said in his description 60% chart 40% nonchart. He also said there were tons of dupes. Given that he doesn't even give the % of 45s and given that he doesn't give the percent of soul, I would say that leaves about 200 soul 45s he has, mostly from the 80s...
  4. The sugar lumps on uptown was always common and always went for like $10 on ebay. Then it appeared in a book and the rarest of the rare for expensive and all of a sudden that dictated a new price -- but it wasn't real. So that isn't the best example of what you are talking about I don't think. The group's other two records are even rare than that.
  5. I always heard that Giattino did the gold issue, so i also assume not in the 70s. He at least had a lot of them. I also don't think it was for the doowop market just because the doowop book wouldn't value both records at the same price if one was so much more in demand it was repressed.
  6. I was looking in someone's kreiter guide (I think that's what it was, it was a doowop price guide) and both this and the other four voices are both priced at $100. Now if I could just find a doowop collector with both the record and that guide.
  7. I listen to urban radio now in the US. I never hear the artists that Dave listed (I'm more likely to hear those on a pop or adult station). I do hear artists that I feel are influenced by classic soul -- for example, John Legend -- but they are more influenced by truly "classic soul" artists such as stevie wonder and donnie hathaway, artists that appeal less to northern audiences.
  8. I don't remember it saying "poogie" on the label of mine, if it does, that's funny, I will check when I get a chance.
  9. I think that is correct.
  10. that's "pookie" hudson. "poogie" is one of the delfonics. I always liked the way they trade off the vocals back and forth on maybe (not the chantels song). Almost in a modern, hiphop style, very unusual for the time.
  11. I knew that from the records as his name is listed there as producer or songwriter. But it was only on that last period in their careers -- e.g. not when they were on groove, for example. That's why I was interested in his connection to them -- e.g. was it just through his Ted Jarrett connection that he ended up producing them, or did he know them, was married to one of the members, performed with them etc.? Were the Avons even from Memphis? Thanks.
  12. I'm pretty sure it's phil orsi singing lead on the velvets 45. I don't have the wise world 45 so i can't compare and I don't know which one came first. The flip "love is slipping away" has the same backing track as Billy McGregor "mr shy". The same recording got released as Phil Orsi on Sonic. There is an alternate version (with still Phil singing lead) as happiness-is on Banner. I think that alternate version also got released on blue soul. I think there's one more label too that I can't remember... confusing...
  13. I was asking what Robert Holmes connection to the avons was. I don't see how he could "be" in the avons as a singer, though, as all their records are female group records with no male voices. Was he their manager or guitarist or something? Thanks.
  14. this has a bobby womack type sound
  15. I like this record a lot. It usually comes up trashed, I have it with both titles in beat up condition (I don't want to sell either though). Their other record "mockingbird" is not very good. The flip of this record was written by Andrew Hamilton, the guy who writes all that stuff up in the all music guide.
  16. Matt, that's the harder label design, the football player one is more common (but cooler).
  17. I don't think this got issued as by the Hi-lites, I've only ever seen it by the Chilites. Obviously they have other records as the hilites.
  18. I think the out of stock ones don't actually show up in web searches (since they only show on his website if you explicitly search for them on the site). Only the in stock ones show up in web searches because if you were to browse his catalog you would see them. The web spiders aren't typing in people's wants into a search box. So I don't think that is a reason at least. Not everything he has in out of stock would have been in his paper lists -- for example, his ebay auctions show up as out of stock even if he never had the items explicitly for purchase on his site. I think that he runs all his inventory through his site and they have the last amount out-of-stock items sold for, etc. I still doubt he would waste time putting items he didn't have in there.
  19. recordsbymail is not a discography. they don't upload random titles into their database that they don't have. That would just be a waste of time for them. If it's on their site, it means they had it.
  20. It's from New Orleans. The flip is a pretty nice (but sort of odd) sweet soul cut.
  21. Hi. I missed the one in sales yesterday. Anyone got one to sell me? please pm with price and condition. Thanks.
  22. The group was from st. louis. I have a photo of the sounds four, I don't know if it's the same group or not.
  23. I agree with Tony in that Van McCoy was mainly a songwriter who shopped his songs around to different record labels (he had his stuff end up in a bunch of weird places for people he never worked directly with). So even though it's not soul, the Gerry and the pacemakers might be the original.
  24. the best 'good thing she's gone' song of all time is the 21st - the sun came out on Joy.
  25. I put all my interviews online at www.sittinginthepark.com/interviews.html I always post them here and will have the lost generation / mystique one posted sometime Sunday night. If you wanted to listen live it would be 1:30AM in the UK but you could and you could even call up if you wanted. You can listen to the station live at www.whpk.org. Or you could just wait until I put it online later. Thanks.
