  1. I don't know where you are getting west side (Pruter book?) but I think Bunky Sheppard was from the south side. At least his kid went to a south side high school. Anyways, I think the in the basement article on the ballads gives some clue about the chicago connection -- I remember it said something about Gene Chandler performing in the bay area and the Ballads backed him on the show or something. The Ballads ended up having their biggest hit with a cover of Gene's constellation side "god bless our love". Given that Bunky worked at constellation, that might explain the connection. There were also more Chicago Ballads connections -- both the Ballads and the Major IV were produced by Mickey Stevenson for the Venture label. The Major IV (formerly the Vows / Majors) are from Chicago and even added extra backup vocals to the Ballads "wish I knew" on Venture.

  3. does anyone criticize ebay for being more expensive than JM's auction?
  4. I'll sell you mine for $315
  5. this is a Chicago record. Martin Dumas was the lead of the Fantastic Epics / Rasputin's Stash.
  6. I always thought that this chuck jackson LP was one of the most underrated and greatest soul LPs of all time. I used to have a cassette tape in my car with this LP on one side and the whispers "bingo" LP on the other side and I wore it out.
  7. It's not surprising that he found you from a posted playlist as Tony even contacts everone who wins a 45 of his on ebay (at least that's how he contacted me and one other person I know). He was a very nice guy when I talked to him via email. No one pointed out here (or at least I missed it if they did) that he is the writer of that Chilites song. Also, the Diplomats back him on his excellent Musicor 45 "let's play house."
  8. WRONG AGAIN SUCKER, I just checked and even the plates are the same as the deadwax is identical. You need to retire now and give me all your records. Here:
  9. what about all those label holes in the discography, plus probably the other titles you google in the discography that don't turn up in a search? I'm sure it's rare, I'm just saying that there are a ton of rare things on the label so it's hard to judge "rarest".
  10. there are a bunch of new orleans things licensed into USA, that Tempos (same group as on Bofuz / Montelle Michelle) and another artist with "st." in their name, I forget what it was, it was on ebay recently.
  11. I've definitely seen the doug and dave recently, I think it was on ebay very recently actually.
  12. Matt, the Mod Singers is the same song as Frankie Newsome on Savern, except just like the chorus part. I think it also got released as just the mod singers on savern but I can't remember right now. It is a licensed in savern production.
  13. if it's listed twice probably your number is right.
  14. also, here is Dave Flynn's listing, I don't know if there is anything here not listed above: https://capitolsoulclub.homestead.com/USALabelListing.html
  15. there are a billion titles on USA, many unknowns. Here is a partial discography: https://www.globaldogproductions.info/u/usa.html Either the 774 number is duplicated or the discography is wrong or you wrote the number wrong.
  16. I don't know if xylophones count as "vibes" (aren't vibes electric?) but if so, I think of it as a mirwood (LA) signature sound, although very reminiscent of detroit.
  17. Port was a jubilee sub-label, not a small label at all. What are you trying to find out about Port?
  18. Someone already quoted the record's position in the pop charts. "Get Out" made #38 in the Billboard r&b charts in 1965 (debuted on 1/30/1965). This is from the Joel Whitburn book. This means it actually was top 40 r&b for at least a second. I specifically know that this record got some play in Chicago just because i do ocassionally find it (in very bad condition though). Obviously this does not mean the record was a "hit" as in selling millions of copies, it does mean that it got national play at least.
  19. I think the jackie hill is the original version but I'm not sure. Either way, it's the cheapest / easiest to get, as unplayed stock was floating around (at least it used to be) for $10 or less.
  20. sorry, i didn't know you were commenting on demo vs. issue, I have no idea about that, I usually find the landa record (trashed) on issue, although I have found it on demo.
  21. The philaofsoul is not just a "national release" it is a reissue of the track from 1975, about 10 years later. "get out" was actually a national hit in the US when it came out, it was probably reissued given the popularity of the group by 1975. In my experience the phil-la of soul is harder to find, there were probably more copies pressed of the original when it was initially a hit. Mayber the philaofsoul one was imported to the Uk and is common there, though, I don't know.
  22. Can anyone post audio of the m.b.'s "another day" on b-jet? I just want to hear the track. Both sides would be even better. Thanks.
  23. labels aren't reversed on all the gray copies, just on the stock that's been floating around the last few years. I had one that played the correct song on each side.
  24. I think I have a jimmy satan somewhere if you have something random to trade.
  25. Lew couldn't get a bid at $999, so all I have to say is less than 500 pounds (even though years ago I saw it sell for more, I've seen a few go through and I think the value is not 500 pounds anymore).
