  1. the soul harmony singles book says the caravelles are the backing group on this.
  2. my friend is looking for a red balloon copy, anyone please pm me if you have one to sell. Thanks.
  3. So what lawton record track the other side play? There are actually *two* ohio rotations, with one common member between them (the original story). And although they recorded in philly, it's still not clear whether the frantic group has a connection or not or is a different group. There's also the mala group (don't know if they have any connections to anyone) and there's also the CMC group, which is maybe st. louis? I've never heard or seen the CMC record (I saw it on a list once but missed it), can someone post that? When I asked the chicago group why they changed their name on the record, they just said because they had heard of a rotations from philly, they didn't specify what group or label, etc. I guess I won't ever be getting one of those emandolynn titles with just 15 copies, at least the one Dave is pressing has both sides.
  4. yeah, I have both records too, I didn't want to dig them out to compare either if someone says they are sure they are different and just played them... re: the shirley combs, it's not super-rare or valuable, I see the value vary a lot, anywhere from $20-$100 depending on who wants it. It doesn't come up for sale a lot though.
  5. Well either it's not the natural four on backup OR they recorded it and didn't remember because Chris James says in the interview that they didn't know about it. The interview is here: www.sittinginthepark.com/interviews.html
  6. the abc version is faster
  7. Willie Hoskins just took the natural four backing track and put Shirley's vocals on it. In my interview Chris James of the natural four says that they didn't know anything about it at the time.
  8. thanks for all the info. So the 'we want freedom' side actually plays one of the lawton sides? Which side? thanks again.
  9. Dave: do you own the Emandolyn 45? I'm just interested in seeing a scan because I've never seen it before. Thanks.
  10. Hey Garethx, have you ever heard of another record by the ohio group (specifically the lawton group)? Someone sent me a recording of the side, supposedly on the emandolyn label (which is also weird because emandolyn is a georgia publisher). Supposedly the other side of the record is the same as one of the lawton sides. I think someone here asked a similar question, asking if there was a separate lawton press with a different b-side.
  11. Also, the lawton group recorded in philly (which is why Bobby Martin's name is on the record) but the group is still from Ohio. I still think there is a separate Frantic group from philly though.
  12. That page is talking about the debroussard group being a 'clone' of the lawton group, who are both ohio. Where do you get anything about the frantic group from that article? Maybe I am not reading it correctly? There is a chicago 'rotations' (that Steve G mentioned), they are Roe-o-tation, they changed the name on the record because they found out about the frantic group.
  13. A rarer red issue copy was just on ebay recently. I also have an earlier record by the group on the bunbea label, very good sweet soul
  14. The sound trap group is from virginia and was a cheap record until some seller hyped it up recently and now it's expensive. Sort of cool and basement sounding. The flip of the other sable title is something like "jackie baby" (but it has a longer title), I can see if I can dig it up.
  15. Thanks for the scan, given that it's just duke browner on that record, I won't know until I talk to the other members. I just met Johnny a couple of weeks ago and will get in contact with the other members soon, I will let you know what they say about their group before Johnny joined.
  16. Also, this confuses the picture more, but Johnny did talk about auditioning for Berry Gordy (he even had a note from Berry). But I think that we before he met his group the magnetics. I'm trying to get in contact with the other members (who actually were 'the magnetics' before McKinney joined the group so I guess they could have done something before), when I do, I will have further confirmation that they are or are not the bonnie group.
  17. I'm pretty sure the magnetics on bonnie are not the chicago group. Johnny McKinney remembered the 6 sides I know of and didn't mention the bonnie 45. I was talking about the magnetics on sable / J-V. Johnny McKinney cut records as a solo artist on MAD, Clock, and then as Johnny Lemac on Chess / Brewtown. I can look at a bonnie label scan to see if I recognize the names of any of the other members also, though, I will try to dig up a scan.
  18. I don't think he's "listing the flip side", I think he's a sweet soul collector in the US (like me) and listed the sweet soul sides. I know better than to post a list like that though (which actually looks like it was taken from a more serious collector) and know that if you ask on here you'll have to pay 5x the ebay price.
  19. Kenny is looking to do shows overseas and has a band together, if anyone is interested in hiring him, you can PM me and I can pass his info onto you. He was the lead singer of the Traits / Center Stage also. I might be able to get him to sign up here and post.
  20. David Griffiths, who did the site, is mainly interested in upstate NY items. I think the site was supposed to have everything eventually but it was never finished I guess.
  21. also, not a discography page, but a page representing soul, funk, and gospel from 3 midwestern states at : www.midwest45s.org
  22. https://www.dcsoulrecordings.com https://www.texassoulrecordings.com/ https://www.georgiasoul.com/ https://www.carolinasoul.org/ https://newyorksoulrecordings.com/index.html (sort of broken) also, not a discography page, but I have a lot of interviews with groups on my webpage: https://www.sittinginthepark.com/interviews.html I'm interviewing the dontells tomorrow.
  23. that is the photo that I posted to soulfuldetroit. I got it from a woman from St. Louis who had a local TV dance show where groups would come on, they all signed their names on it.
  24. It's Johnny Mckinney, not "lee mckinley", he also went by 'lee' (he's Johnny Lemac on Brewtown and Chess) but not "mckinley". He was living in Chicago and Milwaukee at different times in the 60s and 70s but the rest of the magnetics are from the south side of Chicago.
