So for like the last 6 months i have been seeing lots of records on ebay listed as "tittyshaker" ... like some sort of funky early 60s R&B records, often instrumental? Can anyone tell me what a "tittyshaker" is exactly? Is there some specific place that the term came from recently that made people start using it all of a sudden? Like do people say this on the R&B scene? Is it the new "sister funk" where every other record on ebay will soon be described as "tittyshaker"? what's the deal?

I agree with you, but Greg has been to England, gone to events, etc. He's as involved as an American can be with the scene. I would fully accept the criticism applied to me. Although I do have a better idea than some of the sleazy dealers trying to sell any random record as northern, I also am fully aware that I often have no clue as to what is actually a great northern record. I have even played records that I thought were really good to UK djs who told me they were not good northern records (they were still good records though...)

Gee, I guess the one that sold on ebay 6 months ago for 158GBP by a british seller that even quotes the manship million dollars book in the auction itself (which you can search on popsike and see for yourself), as well as manship's own under-4-figure recent auction sale must be wrong. And all the other info in the book that's wrong isn't wrong. It has been on ebay several other times for less too. Feel free to pay 4 figures for it though. p.s. I love Andy's dig at Greg for being American...

not only are there many spice groups, but the carrie label is bizarre, especially the 70-80s releases that are not in detroit. A lot of them have a SC address, this one (from 1980) has a nashville address.

I played the jimmy scott with the fiery spartan band on my radio show last night, i was listening to it and the drumming is bizarre, if there's not two drummers there is at least two kick drums in the one drummer's kit.

Bob Miner did say that also. He surprisingly knew the original release number right off the top of his head, I didn't know he still remembered all the motown release #s.

Jimmy Burns and Garland Green are still alive and still perform. I saw garland green perform a couple of months ago, he came up and sang during a harvey scales show.

I don't think he lives the same place he lived 20 years ago, you know neighborhoods in Chicago get gentrified and the rents go up and renters without money have to move. Anyways, he does the radio show before mine, a doowop show on Sunday Night, 6-7:30PM chicago time, you can listen to him live at www.whpk.org, you could even call him. Sometimes people ask me for his email which is really funny because he still doesn't even have a home phone.

I was just speculating, I don't know if it's really a boot or not. However, while there wouldn't be a US demand for say, rare northern records in the 80s, there definitely were motown collectors, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was a boot of a motown title. It does seem like an odd title to bootleg though.

The 7" version is by carl davis and the chi sound orchestra, it's instrumental, it's on chi-sound. The vocal version is on the LP. I think that's what you're thinking of. That photo on the back of the LP is of the group members standing at promontory point ("the point"), which is this part of lake michigan that juts out at about 55th street that a lot of people go to in the summer to hang out. I used to live a block from there so it was cool that the photo was taken right there. I'm still trying to figure out where that 5 stairsteps park photo from the first LP was taken, someone told me it was a park at 95th street, I doubt those stone walls would still be there though.

the font on the small text (publishing, etc.) looks like it's an 80s font maybe.

Is the flip the same? I vaguely remember bidding on it the one time I've seen it on ebay and don't remember it having the "no no never again" side which is the side I know on the monster masters record, but I remember listening to it and thinking it was a nice northern side.

Another Chicago collector actually also told me that girl in the window was played on the radio, he remembered hearing it. It's funny because Ray Forman said he didn't know the record was even released and didn't remember the name "the mist" or what it came from.

Hi Paul. As I said in my previous post, I'm pretty sure that Mel Britt sings on the Dispo 45 so your information about him not singing on any of their 45s is not correct. Not only does Ray Forman say this in the interview I did with him about his group the Visitors (which you can listen to on my webpage), but you can hear Mel as the baritone that comes in at the end of the song. I never specifically asked Mel about this the two times I talked to him because I had no reason to question what I had heard already, but it seems like it is true. Did you specifically ask him if he is not the Baritone that comes in at the end of Little Golden Band? Hopefully I will get a radio interview set up and will clarify this. Thanks.
