  1. I think the backing group on this is the Chicago group the Vows (aka the Majors / Major IV). It sounds like them and they did a bunch of work with Dave Hamilton (they sing on Dee Edwards 45 on Tuba for example and on Geraldine Hunt's record). What's bizarre is that Bynum is not a common name and one of the Vows is named Berl Bynum. I asked him about the record and he said he would have to hear it, but then I asked him if he knew a Beth Bynum and he said that he had not heard of her. Bizarre.
  2. Hi. I haven't seen one -- I am interested in seeing it if you can dig it out and scan it. Even if they were, though, they weren't a chess subsidiary, the label was run by Morry Alpert who ran the MET record shop (and the MET label) and run by Chicago DJ Richard Pegue in the 60s... along with the Nickel label.   3. Was "bet your surprised" the intended a-side? it's a joke on the listener, as it starts off sounding like it's gonna be "tell it like it is" and then switches.
  4. while some of the above is clearly paranoia, what's crazy / interesting to me is how they build the entire new my ebay, 'beta tested' it for months if not longer, and it's still totally broken and barely usable. like really basic features. for example, everyone complained about not being able to choose number of items displayed in the search. after like half a year they added a dropdown to select it. but IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING AND IT'S NOT IN BETA ANYMORE. A lot of my ebay is totally horrible and broken. They either don't care about the functionality anymore or they reason that they're such a big site that it doesn't matter because you will use it anyways.
  5. penny was NOT a subsidiary of chess. In another thread here someone clarified who the chessmen were (just some chess musicians). I would have to search to find the thread. Chess had many licensed in records from other labels, and many are listed on the discography but were never actually released.

  8. my point was exactly that a record was only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and my statement about the materials was that that was the only other way I could see evaluating it and that made no sense. It seems like Pete is evaluating the value some other way. If many people are willing to pay much more than 8000 pounds for frank wilson, how does pete keep saying that it's only worth 8000 pounds? Or is he actually saying that you could only sell it for 8000 pounds? That is what I have been repeating. I don't see how you're disagreeing with me. But I don't care either at this point, I just think it's strange because I don't think I'm saying anything complicated.
  9. what determines a record's "real value"? I don't see any inherent value other than the cost of the vinyl and paper in the record. you keep acting like there is some inherent value to any record independent of what many people are willing to pay for it.
  10. both of you keep talking about the value of a record as completely inherent in 1) the rarity and 2) the sound. Obviously that isn't true as there are lots of extremely rare and good records that aren't worth much. This record has additional value due to its history on the scene, stories behind it, the fact that it is motown and the importance of motown, etc.

  14. why do you keep addressing a member of the group with "these guys"? you're talking to one of them (if you didn't know). this was the best part of the interview: We now have a deal with Stones Throw records and have been placing a lot of tunes in TV/Film. Six tracks are going on the next Guitar Hero (DJ Hero), including Ramsey and Co 'Love Call' and Jewel 'Paradise'.

  17. If you're talking about Bob Miner (fat white guy), he never had Frank Wilson or Patrice Holloway but had pretty much everything else (including the charters). I don't think there was another big motown collector in Chicago.

  20. not being part of the scene, I'm sort of confused given these two copies, how the record got played in the first place. Was it 'discovered' via one of these two copies, via an acetate, etc.? thanks.

  23. I think Ron Murphy did the Soul King issue. I don't know if he did any licensing or not. Legal or not, I wouldn't call it a "boot" which is a illegal repress of a released record, as it wasn't released.
  24. my "6 copies test pressed" story comes from Ron Murphy, who posted the story a bunch of times on soulfuldetroit. he seemed to have pretty good knowledge about record pressing (given what he did) and how motown worked in its production process, but who knows the real story now...
