Compliments Interview And Sitting In The Park Music Show
boba replied to boba's topic in All About the SOUL
thanks for being a regular listener, sorry I didn't reply, stuff has been crazy. I did go to Richard's funeral service the next day, it was pretty nice and all the Chicago DJs showed up. I have some cool interviews scheduled in the next couple of weeks. Thanks. -

Hi. Today on my radio show I interviewed James Conley, lead singer of the Compliments. James is from the South Side of Chicago and started singing in local groups when he was in high school. Soon after leaving school he formed a group called the Junior Flames; the group performed in local talent shows but never recorded. In 1964 Conley met local producer and record label owner George Redman. George cut a single -- I'll give you true love / If it's love -- on James for his Moneytown records. Conley performed for a year as a solo singer on reviews set up by Redman. From 1965-1967, Conley sang with a local group the Notations (which predated the Twinight group). After the Notations broke up, Conley formed a group called the Compliments. The Compliments performed local shows and were managed by Marcellous Burke, the uncle of the Five Stairsteps who managed many other local groups (such as the Roe-o-tation, Kaldirons, Vashonettes, etc.). Burke took the Compliments to Johnny Pate, who signed the group to ABC records. The group cut two tracks for ABC -- Beware Beware and Borrow Till Morning -- two nice Chicago sounding cuts. Unfortunately, the Chicago branch of ABC closed before the single was released. ABC gave the group the option of buying their masters. The group bought the rights to their recordings and took the masters to Universal Distributors where they met the Leaner Brothers, who were interested in releasing the record. The Leaners pressed the two tracks on their Midas record label; however, the label soon folded and the record was never distributed. The Compliments tried to promote the record given the few copies they receieved, even appearing on the local Chicago Soul Train on Channel 26. The group soon broke up due to their lack of success. Throughout the 70s and early 80s Conley performed in local clubs in Chicago, often backed by the Sonics Band. In 1983 Conley released a record a disco single, titled "Limelight", for his own Firefly label. Conley continued to perform in local clubs through the 80s. You can listen to my interview at the bottom of: https://www.sittinginthepark.com/interviews.html I also did a music show. You can listen at: https://www.sittinginthepark.com/3-15-2009.mp3 Playlist follows. As a side note, the phones blew up after I played the record by Tracey Lavett -- clearly it would have been a hit in Chicago had it been released here as it has a very Chicago sound. You can also hear previous shows at: https://www.sittinginthepark.com/shows.htm Intensions - Love is blind - Moneytown Jimmy Hayes - As the city sleeps - Commerce Jeff Dale - Our love will go stronger - Atco Tracey Lavett - In my great big lonely room - Achillean Eddie Jefferson - Uh oh (I'm in love again) - Stax Kings Go Forth - High on your love - Mr. C Energies - How many tears - Cobra Benitez and Nebula - I'm so sad - Vaya Preparations - You don't want me - Jarda Maxwells - Let's get away - Brigade Color Us People Band - A day without your love - Lightning Cold Fire Inc. - I'm gonna love you anyway - Lightin' Expos - Your best friend and me - Stall Kenni Woods - That guy is mine - Phillips thanks, Bob

i think i actually do know that guy, he sells at record shows in chicago

seems pretty normal for a US record dealer I like how he gave ebay its "final warning". unfortunately, I'm only half joking given the unstable people I meet at record shows I searched for "paychump" in title and description and couldn't find the listing btw.

The Trips Love Can'tbe Modenised /there's A Mountain
boba replied to Paulmc's topic in Look At Your Box
yes, I think the chico lamarr uses the same backing track. I like the trips better though, wish I owned a copy. Do you think it's jimmy conwell on the new group? It doesn't sound like him to me, i will listen again. Thanks. -
The Trips Love Can'tbe Modenised /there's A Mountain
boba replied to Paulmc's topic in Look At Your Box
I don't think so. Just because the names of the exits are on the label as producers does not make the group the trips. -

boba replied to Paulmc's topic in Look At Your Box
there is also the new group version on gemini. i think the trips are the same group as the tripps on victoria, which were frankie karl and the dreams, and not the exits. clearly it's jimmy conwell singing on it, though, I think something funny happened in the studio. -
this is not brothers and sisters on nickel. also, brothers and sisters on nickel has nothing to do with brothers, sisters, and cousins on nasco (which is the bits and pieces).

Thanks a lot, I just made the corrections in the first post. I get confused about the name because Jackie Beavers is Tammy Levon's real name and is what she is credited as on her first Nation 45. Thanks.

By the way, I met the label owner of this label once (sort of accidentally), the label is actually Fipi and not Fip and he pronounced it "fippi". Fipi publishing is on some other records (like the specials on satch) but he didn't remember those releases, only the released on his label. I think those 2 45s are the only ones on the label.
-
Yes. There is a record by lenny satin on the same label. It's red and not blue though.
-
the flip of this is actually northern but northern people don't seem to have picked up on it yet and only funk people buy it. why don't you post audio of the flip?
-
thanks, i actually had those two on my want list but I guess I didn't even remember what they sounded like! that gamith finally came up for sale on ebay again and went for a lot, i had put it on my list a while back when it was going cheap and i lost it... thanks.

Joy Lovejoy To Appear As Part Of This Weekend's " Soultrip " In Chicago
boba replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
i still don't think joy lovejoy was even from chicago btw, gene barge didn't think so and thought she was from a group of three sisters from somewhere else. i have never found the record in chicago. i tried to call raynard miner but the phone number i had was bad. kev said ray would show up to the thing but he didn't. i sent him a letter but didn't get a response. i saw gene barge on monday morning and asked if he had a contact for ray and he said no. if i ever talk to him i'll ask if he remembers. -
nice mix max, i see you finally flipped that now 45 over. what is the "say a prayer" track on side a after the main attraction? what is the second track ("don't change me") on side b after billy mcgregor?
-
Chris, your text doesn't answer his question at all, he's asking about phone numbers, your article is about postal zip codes. Neither of the examples in the original email are area codes, though, the area code is the first 3 numbers before the quoted numbers e.g. in (xxx)yyy-zzzz, the area code is the xxx part. The yyy part is called the "prefix" nowadays. I guess back then the first two letters were called the "exchange name", here is an article I found via quickly googling, although there probably are better ones: https://ourwebhome.com/TENP/TENproject.html

Hi. Today on my radio show I did a radio show in memory of legendary Chicago DJ Richard Pegue, who sadly and unexpectedly passed away last Tuesday. Pegue was one of the few remaining DJs who truly loved the music. He was a mentor to younger DJs and was an important member of the community. On my show I played all records written, arranged, or produced by Pegue. You can check out the show at: https://www.sittinginthepark.com/3-8-2009.mp3 Playlist follows.
