  1. when did groovey grooves stock surface? wasn't it a custom label? there are a couple oddball group soul records on the label that are pretty rare and I don't think copies of those are around.
  2. lots of people looking btw
  3. i think you should not bid just to be safe
  4. It's the masquerades on formal, not the masqueraders. It should not be valuable. A couple of the scott brothers were in this group.
  5. butch won the last (non-cracked) copy on ebay if you want to approach him about it
  6. I wonder if you create 50 ebay user IDs, do an auction, and watch your items if you can get your auctions featured in the sales link here and other places...
  7. the sound change is mainly when the record is heat damaged -- e.g. the actual grooves have a rippled look. i heard these record flatteners work much better on LPs than they do on 45s.
  8. Hi. Today on my radio show I interviewed members of the Chicago group the Marlynns. The Marlynns were from the South Side of Chicago and formed at Hirsch high school. The group was originally called the Norvells (named after the wife of the bass singer of the Soul Stirrers) and were an unusual Chicago group as they featured a woman on lead with male backing singers. After Richard Pegue's group the Belvederes took the name the Norvells, the group changed their name to the Marlynns. After a couple of years of playing in talent shows, the group got a record contract, via legendary Chicago engineer Ed Cody, with Tower records. The group released their first single on the Tower label in 1963. The A-side of the record, "The Break", was a novelty dance track that received radio play in Chicago. The flip, "My heart is yours", was a nice Miracles inspired ballad. The group appeared on the Jim Lounsbury TV show and, via Lounsbury, did record hops for White teenagers in the northwest suburbs. The group recorded their second single, "Come back" b/w "The very next time", a year later for James Shelton's Daran record label. Shelton was group member Terry Thompson's uncle and Marshall Thompson of the Chilites was Terry's cousin; the tracks were recorded at the same session as the Chi-Lites' "I'm so jealous". Despite both sides of the Marlynns record being excellent ballads, the track received little promotion in the wake of the Chi-lites' success. Although the Daran record was the last Marlynns single, the group did do some session work, backing Sheryl Swope on her first single, backing other Daran artists, and even doing backing vocals for Ral Donner. The Marlynns disbanded in the mid-to-late 60s after Thompson joined the military. A couple of the members formed a band called the Chi-TNTs that played around Chicago until 1973. Member Sheryl Henry joined the South Shore Commission, singing lead on tracks such as "We're on the right track". Terry Thompson started working as a session drummer in Chicago even in high school while with the Marlynns (he even was on staff at Vee Jay records). Thompson also worked at Chess, playing drums on a large number of Chicago soul records in the 60s and 70s. He also began producing and arranging music in the 60s, working with James Shelton, Richard Pegue, and Clarence Johnson. He continues to be involved with performing and producing music in Chicago. You can listen to the interview on my webpage: https://www.sittinginthepark.com/interviews.html you can listen to previous music shows at: https://www.sittinginthepark.com/shows.htm thanks, Bob
  9. ok, a quick google does reveal websites that reveal popular / watched ebay items. Taking out ads based on them still takes it one level further though. Either way, it's not going away any time soon so no use in me bitching about it.
  10. i think they definitely draw attention to things that casual ebay users who don't look regularly will have missed. I'm sort of paranoid about how they work because not everything is keyed off of generic terms like "northern soul", etc. I think maybe ebay uses watch or view statistics to determine what will be popular. I don't want them using what I've watched in my watch items to show other people things...
  11. well it helped that there were a couple threads here hyping it up plus the ads on the right. i don't understand why people post links to ebay auctions that aren't their own, are they trying to keep up the value of records they own already? it's not like it's doing anyone a favor as drawing a lot of attention to it will just make it not be a deal for anyone.
  12. the gloria scott and the tonettes 45 is much earlier than the barry white production, though. I think it is from California because it looks like it's written by Sly Stone, writing credits are "stewart" and it says a sly production on the record. So maybe Gloria Scott and the Tonettes are connected to the modern group who are connected to the sweethearts?
  13. thanks for clarifying, that's what i was wondering
  14. there's a soundclip on manship's site, it has the same backing track as the intensions "she's my baby"
  15. the tonettes on volt are the same group as the charmels, they are oscar toney's sisters. 'my heart can feel the pain' is a different group from san antonio, that came out on the dynamic label. i doubt there is any connection to gloria scott and the tonettes with either of these two groups.
  16. it's not related in any way to the dramatics on crackerjack, different song, and it's a chicago record.
  17. isn't the demures on brunswick?
  18. boba

    Patti Hendrix

there is a better version of 'men' (in my opinion) I think called superman on the barbara and the uniques LP... unless I'm getting confused.
  19. I think the purple is the first press, I'm still interested to know if they are from the same plates and if not if the sound quality is identical.
  20. congratulations on your new baby
  21. nice playlist
  22. for every group i talk to I try to get a photo of them from back in the day, long term I want to do a book about chicago soul groups and include as many photos as I can. i'm not sure if you want to see me, plus it's less flattering to the artists to show them now versus then, but I can try to get someone to take a photo and send it to you. thanks.
  23. is there any sound quality difference between the purple label and blue label copies?
  24. it was VG+ US grading (no EX) with a seller that grades conservatively. Maybe a deal but I'm not seeing 250 pounds much less 350
  25. Just two days ago I found Charles Knox, the other Creation / Contributor of Soul, he confirmed the story about sleeping under the air conditioner and the brothers of soul recording. The real creations are the high voices on the record that sound like girls. They also back a lot of Chicago Giant productions, for example, they are the group on Bobby Hutton's Come See What's Left of Me. Thanks.
