  1. i just wrote some more but erased it, it's pointless, as there's no way to have a constructive conversation about his music without it being a conversation about him. And there's no way to have a constructive conversation about him. I even played a Levine record on my radio show today, an LJ Johnson record, LJ has such a fantastic voice, and I'm glad the record was made. Next week I'm interviewing a group (the Teques) where one of the members doesn't have a such positive opinion of Ian, but she can say what she wants to when she speaks.
  2. I don't even care who's playing what, who played what first, etc. I'm not even part of that scene. And unfortunately I do have to care about $5 vs. $5000 because I'm a collector but I don't want to hear about it on a podcast as it doesn't really reflect much on the music, and I never talk about values on my radio show. I will give info on the record or artist if I think it would be interesting to the artists (e.g. "this was a group of GIs stationed in Thailand who recorded and released a record on their own Louisiana label"). Clearly the DJ's persona comes through in any podcast but the podcast shouldn't be "about" the DJ, it should be about the music. And IL is doing a nice thing for his fans, who will enjoy what he does. But they are fans of him, and that's what he's putting out on the podcasts.
  3. This could be the greatest podcast in the world but reviewing it, no matter how rationally, is pointless because any positive comment is construed as upping IL's persona and any critique, no matter how constructive, is construed as a deep personal attack on IL and met with barrage of counter-attacks from mindless yes-men and then the great man himself. Then you become a personal enemy of IL for expressing an opinion on music. I wish this were about the music and the actual artists. There's obviously some good music on here, unfortunately tainted by the context.

  8. the $191 copy is my personal copy and that was before the record was "known". I swear I saw this on manship auction but I could just be confused, can someone tell me if I'm wrong at least?
  9. if nobody knows, can anyone tell me if manship did auction a copy or if i'm confused? and if he did, what it went for? thanks a lot.
  10. lou washington is the guy at the center handing weird al the pizza at the beginning of this (really): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2mU6USTBRE
  11. can anyone tell me what a reasonable price to sell the egyptians "come and take my love" would be? i searched the forum and only find wants. i thought manship had auctioned one relatively recently but it doesn't come up in manship auction results. thanks in advance.

  13. my point was just that collectors forget that regular people listened to records, everybody thinks that something was bootlegged for some tiny scene when there was demand for certain records from regular people.
  14. i think dau is specifically a dutch bootleg label but plenty of records were bootlegged for the regular US market after stuff went out of print. regular people played records to listen to music.
  15. EDIT: SOLD Millionaires "Never for me" stock copy $75. Free US Shipping, only $10 overseas shipping. Paypal gift only. Email sitpsales@gmail.com only to reserve. Currently rising demand for this record, sold for $121 a couple of days ago, multiple $100+ sales in the last year: https://www.collectorsfrenzy.com/search?q=millionaires+never&search-button= This copy is a nice VG, plays with no problems, light label stains, original (but frayed at the bottom) mercury sleeve. here is full 256kbs stereo unaltered audio: https://www.divshare.com/download/24387142-908 Here is a scan of the record. Light label wear / staining: Again $75. Free US Shipping, only $10 overseas shipping. Paypal gift only. Email sitpsales@gmail.com only to reserve.
  16. johnny dollar on fised is johnny dollar on mccormick, if not other johnny dollars as well
  17. sorry, didn't intend to turn this thread into a discussion of semantics / splitting hairs
  18. this doesn't contradict what i said. it's not an identical song but it rips off (or is "developed from") the original. and like i said, even if it were identical, that doesn't mean people aren't covering jackie wilson's version since it soundwise isn't identical to the dells and nobody heard the dells. similar to how ruben studdard covered luther vandross' version of "superstar", he probably never heard the carpenters and it doesn't sound at all like the carpenters.
  19. I've never heard the term "soul blues". All I know is that the DJ on my radio station Arkansas Red who plays "blues" completely despises "Southern Soul" despite other people calling a lot of his music that and despite him listening to "soul" in the '70s.
  20. i disagree. the jackie wilson song rips off the dells song but it's not exactly the same. and even if it were exactly the same, there still could be "covers" of wilson's interpretation of the song.
  21. looks like an '80s cosby shirt
  22. Lavorn is not Donnie and Fonnie's brother, his name is Lavorn Smith.
  23. it came out on 3 labels. it also came out red boy with the same two sides as on steady.
  24. I think the Grooms 45 is way too long and drags. Someone just told me Ralfi Pagan's version of "I can't see myself without you" is the original, with JR Bailey singing background.
