  3. Hi. First of all, I want to announce the passing of Billy Brown, the super talented leader of the group Shades of Brown, from Altgeld Gardens on the South Side of Chicago. Although he never achieved the success of many other singers and groups, he was always making music and sounded great even in his apartment just playing the piano and singing along. You can listen to the interview I did with Billy on my interviews page. Today I just did another really excellent radio show, a full 90 minutes of music. I started off the show with some early 60s R&B and some girl groups and then played lots and lots of sweet soul. Check it out at: https://www.sittinginthepark.com/11-3-2013.mp3? You can listen to other shows and interviews with Chicago groups by going to my main page www.sittinginthepark.com Also, if someone you know wants to subscribe to this email list, they can add themselves at the following URL: https://eepurl.com/n7Qr5 Playlist follows and I hope you enjoy the show. 4. and beale street is not threatening either though, it's totally touristy. you're more likely to get threatened by drunk people there.
  5. there is current demand / value to the jay pee version. but the kemp press is much rarer and has a good crossover side.
  6. i don't know but shirley carrol is probably shirley karol who was on dakar
  7. maybe you should pay me for it before you sell it?
  8. i got the record the other day, will try to listen to it before my radio show this sunday. thanks again.
  9. i didn't realize this was such a serious topic
  10. they carolyn sullivan 45 used to also be collectible for the drum break on it
  11. the passionettes on uni are NOT the fuzz, as incorrectly documented in some places. they are likely the kavettes, who were andre's girl group at the time and who he changed the names of as he switched labels (he confirmed to me that the tears on smash are the kavettes, didn't ask him about the passionettes at the time). andre did similar things to his main male group (the green berets became the velvet hammer when he switched them to polydor / soozi). the wasters on uni were also an andre/karl production. they used the pseudonyms hammer and nail as writers in the writing credits.
  12. Billy Brown of the Shades of Brown passed away a few days ago. Sad news. Super talented dude, he was even continuing to make great music and just not recording it. Also a super nice guy.
  13. here's the shades of brown LP cover, Billy is in the front
  14. here is billy brown and sheryl:
  15. I have a pic of billy with sheryl swope in the late '70s or early '80s, they were a duo act then. I will try to find it.
  16. Tony Washington definitely had the courage to be "out" and if you look at the early pictures of the superiors he's not wearing makeup. He wasn't putting on a show when he did wear makeup. Also, not gay, but Wayne Cochran was pretty flamboyant being the white James Brown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xULvj8kgYGg the footage of him on future shock in the '70s is way crazier. when he went out not performing he was dressed like that. tons of people had crazy personas with the line between their "real life" and stage life not that clear. also, the most obvious person to mention is george clinton.
  17. can anyone tell me what a copy of the superbs "on a day when it's raining" should sell for, say in mint condition and in VG condition? I'm not sure how much to ask for a copy and I've seen it on some people's wants recently. Apparently some people don't think it was released but it was. Obviously not as rare as "your eyes" but still a hard record. Thanks in advance.

  21. I'm confused about this. Was this recorded and finished in 1979? It sounds like there are some things in the mix that are from later than 1979. Am I just mishearing? Thanks.

  23. i paid top dollar ($200) for the cheryl williams when it was rare but it turned out stock was just coming out and it's around now. Now I would say value is $75-$100 (it dropped lower for a while).
