  1. sorry! there's lots of cool 60s footage of groups too on youtube, I like the super basement intimate feeling of this versus on some of the big TV shows.
  2. I don't think so. An acetate has a metal core with a coating. I think a carver is lathe cut directly into some sort of vinyl
  3. sorry, I didn't listen to the clips, I guess I thought it was mint.
  4. I'm surprised it went that high 5 years ago. I thought the record (at least the volt record) was worth nothing until people just picked up on it and it shot up. The current Manship guide has a listing for the volt record for 20 pounds which usually translates to like $10 on ebay. Was it just that expensive because of the local release?
  5. I think the best one is "a woman was made to be loved" btw
  6. There is a 45 from 1982 by a group Coast to Coast on the Multi-Sound label out of New York. One side of the record, "I want you dear", is excellent, building sweet soul. The other side, "Paula Marie", is really nice rare groove. I think they also had a 12" with some even better tracks but I don't collect 12"s so I don't know the details. The lead singer of the group was Ben Iverson, who led the doowop group the Hornets who recorded on the Way Out label in the early 60s. Iverson later cut a soul record as Ben Iverson and the Nue Dey Express - this group supposedly morphed into the Crown Heights Affair. Anyways, I just got the Coast to Coast record from someone on here (thanks Chris!) and was listening to it and both sides were excellent. I googled to find more info about the group and found this: https://www.coasttocoastband.net/ anyways, the reason this page is awesome is because of this page: https://www.coasttocoastband.net/?cat=9 The page has videos of one of their performances, they're totally incredible and you should check them out. The songs are split up so you don't have to watch the whole thing. The band and singer are really good and you really get the vibe of watching a band playing in a tiny nightclub in the early 80s.

  8. also, I think there was an article about some of the california sweet soul collecting crews in the last issue of Wax Poetics. a younger French collector told me that younger collectors in France are into sweet soul, but I don't have firsthand experience. I have been contacted by a bunch of people in Germany too, not sure if that means anything.
  9. actually it's sort of exploding right now. There is a whole new generation of younger collectors in California who are getting into the current rare sweet soul scene (created by the collectors of my generation)... some of the california people on here could provide more details. Even funk 45 collectors are also getting into sweet sounds... although there are still people who call any sweet soul "deep soul" which I find incredibly annoying because in my opinion they are two very different sounds. one thing that's kind of annoying to me is that a lot of the new collectors want to own the rarest and most expensive records. there are tons of awesome $15 sweet soul records they could buy first. I don't really feel threatened by them (in terms of competition) because at this point I'm mostly looking for unknown weird records.
  10. from your playlist it looks like you're buying CDs (versus buying individual mp3s). Is that right? I'm still interested in finding out how the scene works and how a recording becomes publicized and distributed on your scene. I've actually heard some really good music but people don't know what to do with it.
  11. actually that worked well in the US when price guides 1 and 2 were out, as they had much less info than the current book which is like twice the size. So even if they had a manship guide, if you weren't getting an obvious northern record it was cheap. No more.
  12. yeah, I'm looking to buy copies of this common record (certified by John Manship) for cheap
  13. can't believe no one has offered you the burning desire at $800, do people actually think it's worth more?
  14. ok the dude second chanced me so it's all good. i wish i hadn't bid that high though.
  15. That degree of freedom was cheap, if more sweet soul people participated in the auction it probably would have gone for double.
  16. Man you buy a lot of new music! I wonder how much music you bought that didn't make the list. How do you even find out about the music, like is it music that people talk about on the modern soul message board? Or do you buy from certain labels or producers, etc.? is there some specific site that you can download music from all in the same style? Lots of people that I interview on my radio show put out modern music that sounds like this. I assume the CDs just sit in their basement. It would be cool if you could give me some tips on what to tell them to distribute their new music. Some of them manage to get their music played in the local steppers scene by getting their stuff to steppers DJs but that's pretty much it I think.
  17. I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU JUST OUTBID ME ON THIS AGAIN
  18. it would be funny if it was harvey lyles uncle or something
  19. I thought both tracks were just okay, both sides of the Hog 45 are far superior. If this were on a 45 I'm not sure it would be expensive . Actually, that people don't know side is structured really weird, it might have gotten better after the clip ends because most songs resolve themselves at the chorus. I listed to it a few times and that side might actually be really good but I would have to hear more of it.
  20. I just checked and even though the Kim Stacy record is Spartanburg, S.C., I think there's a connection. The Stacy record is produced by Bill Lyles. (actually it says Bill Lyles production, and the label number is BL-301) The Combinations record also says Lyles Production I don't know what that means since the combinations record is produced by Tee Fletcher, but I do know that they must be related somehow even if they're not exactly the same label.
  21. Brian, do you think that Kim Stacy is related or not? Thanks. wait... see my next post...
  22. I'm pretty sure ther was a photo either in the daptone modo cd or on this webpage about the label. I'm pretty sure they were black.
  23. This is the one I was thinking of but it has a south carolina address which is why I was questioning it above. I didn't want to give false info
  24. I don't think the chicago combinations are related, but I haven't found the group yet so I'm not 100 percent sure
  25. maybe not if you're sure this kimtone is ga actually, I always thought it was carolinas. The record I'm thinking of is carolinas, I will try to dig out my info and see if the label numbers match up at least.
