  1. it would be funny if you made some sort of diagram to illustrate this all. Also, sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is avant garde jazz from 1940s-50s?
  2. also, i've been told they have a 3rd record but i don't know what it is
  3. I'm pretty sure it's the same group. I have a really clean copy of "dreamin", got it super cheap because a few came through ebay at the same time and the seller of my copy was super conservative grader. oh yeah, he said that there was a skip on one side (which I figured I could fix) but it didn't skip at all (at least after I cleaned it).
  4. crap, wish i had seen that
  5. yeah, it was a hit. one of the best sweet soul records ever. i don't think an instrumental was released of any of their sides?
  6. Ian Levine played the Phenomenons "without your love" in his preview mix that Pete posted.
  7. it rarely shows up but i'm sure it's more common than "the wind is blowing", it's just that it's not known as valuable so people aren't likely to list it on ebay. really nice midtempo female sound.
  8. chicago is record hell. at least if you get stuff it's probably unused stock versus some destroyed cracked moldy record from someone's leaky basement.
  9. I bid low on the kenny smith and lost, it still went pretty low. that 25th century review is a really nice sweet soul cut, i can't believe it only went for 22 pounds.
  10. from looking in the US or New Zealand? Because if you ended up getting lots of cut outs shipped from the US, you would be more likely to get the rare stuff (e.g. intentions on tiki) than the hits. totally unrelated, but I love the ben e king "the record (baby I love you)", it's my favorite of his by far. Plus the song is about recording a record.
  11. lots of stuff used to be common in the 70s that i wish were common now ... I think doowop collectors are much more obsessed with getting the original company sleeve for their stuff. There always used to be ads like in discoveries for people selling different label sleeves, and they were mainly 50-60s stuff.
  12. the best chantels soul 45 by far (in my opinion of course) is their RCA track "I'm gonna win him back". it's killer. it's not super slow though, more crossovery.
  13. A lot of the chess catalog numbers that don't exist (there's obviously a lot of them) were actually released on the original label the artist was on but with the chess number. I think there are some that don't exist at all but very few. Record #s that don't exist are the bane of my existence.
  14. I like a wide range of soul (from like 1960 to mid '80s) but my absolute favorite sound is indie (e.g. not the stylistics) falsetto sweet soul harmony, from like around '70-'73.
  15. The Cheers record is such a classic killer Chicago record. I didn't know anyone even played the other side. I don't know if I've ever even flipped it over. Richard Pegue (who produced their first hit "I'm not ready to settle down") even told me this okeh record was his favorite record of theirs (despite his non-involvement!).
  16. I think you have to be picky on condition with this record. It's very long so it's pressed at a low volume. Only clean copies will be playable.
  17. soul suspension is rare. but you should be able to get the vals I think.
  18. In my experience the dog end sleeve is rarer
  19. i see it more frequently on an all-gold label. i still don't have this record btw but have the other two. i will make an effort to get the colored label on this one since it looks so much better.
  20. I never noticed there's no vocal group, are you sure? Someone from the Five Crowns told me the girls were from Altgeld Gardens (and he specifically knew the song "the hurt's still here" which did get local play). But nobody from the gardens that I've asked has heard of them.
  21. I'm sorry, I am very slow at things. At least he got his sales bumped from my stupidity.
  22. Thanks, I will try those things. I think soundcloud does have an option (for the uploader) to allow or not allow downloads though. I look forward to uncovering Adam's cover ups and posting them to all forums . Thanks for the mix, will check it out later today or tomorrow.
  23. Everyone died? Anyways, I assumed the forum would be mail-based as most members don't have computers or phones.. Sorry for the cheap shots, couldn't let this go by.
  24. I think this is the best suggestion so far. But I think the name is supposed to start with the letter X. I guess it does in this case because Madam isn't part of the name.
