Thanks, this further explains things for me. That is a crazy number of events though, I know people here are always complaining about the number of events. What is the motivation for all these people to put on the events? Are they making money? Celebrating the music and reliving their youth? Having something local that people don't have to drive far to go to?

yeah, the sisters love also sing in that movie. But there was some crazy afro funk group that also performed that was really good, I don't think they released anything. None of the above acts were shirtless in the movie though.

So on ebay there was this promotional picture of the Ballads (the Oakland group). It was interesting so I bought it. It turned out to be a promotional pamphlet. Inside there was a totally different picture of the group, which I was totally not expecting. Here it is (warning, don't scroll down if you are overly sensitive). I admit to being much fatter than these dudes but I also don't take shirtless pictures.

Isn't that most events, based on what people told me above? that's why I was referring to this as almost like selling a business versus selling a collection.

I just scanned the perfections, I have never ever seen one for sale. The perfections are essentially the same group as the late 60s Norvells, except that Jerry Townes is singing lead on "which one am I". The song was originally called "three sides to a triangle" and was supposed to come out on nickel / penny. Jerry Townes is the same person as Jerry Brown, who was one half of the Dutones on Columbia (the other member was Richard Parker). Jerry and Pegue both worked at the Met record shop so they knew each other from there.

Thanks for the response and explanation, I appreciate it. I'm just trying to get a feel for what the scene really is like. For example, people here are always complaining about the number of events. Are there mostly small events with DJs playing bootlegs, etc. with a few larger events with the most elite DJs playing originals? It seems like there's a relatively small number of these large events, which would mean that in general, people still don't care and it's still acceptable to play bootlegs (despite the sentiments of this site)? Is this true?

yeah, the blast one has to be first as it's from 1973 and the other '73 press is on the flip of a recording by I think bob collins and the fabulous five.

Here are scans of both sides of the Arnell release. "I'm hip to your game" is a totally basement, echoey recording, different than the smash record. The other side is a really good northern track actually, the only thing that takes away from it is the poor production values, I think it still could be played. The labels are reversed on this, I guess they probably are on all copies given the tiny press? The other record on Arnell, by the Magnificents, has nothing to do with the Johnny Keyes group. Both sides are instrumental, it was Renaldo's backing band.

this was an honest question btw. Is this site representative of most DJs and northern nights or is it mostly the higher end DJs and specialty nights while most nights are "oldies" played by DJs like this?

It's identical to the numero reissue, which includes another track that really (or probably at this point) didn't come out. It's this record: https://boomkat.com/vinyl/94067-renaldo-domino-i-ll-get-you-back-two-years-four-days there are short clips there. It was just a quick google but it's out of stock there. There might be many other web outlets that carry it. On the numero page, it looked like I could add the track to my cart so you might be able to buy directly from them.

this is in soul harmony singles. They have another very hard 45 that rarely turns up and 3 that turn up (one is common).

I know nothing about classic rock, thanks for pointing out the ELO connection. I always think it's dumb when people don't know a song is a cover, that was me this time. The track "that's the way that the cookie crumbles" is totally excellent though.

yeah, I actually don't know anything about her and discovered her by seeing an epic stock copy for cheap and buying it and it turning out to be really good. I googled and saw the paul anka stuff and got confused.

maybe the artist didn't know it was released (that actually happens a lot, plus it's rare enough that it's not an official "release"). Or maybe the interviewer did a bad job or something.

didn't she also work with the beatles? I heard she was the 5th beatle (just kidding). She did have an LP on Apple records and some article I googled says she worked with them but it was vague so I'm not sure.

that doesn't make much sense for the US label at least because the label was originally called "dyno-vox" and the name changed happened with an earlier release: https://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/dynovoice.htm https://www.globaldogproductions.info/d/dyno-vox-dynovoice.html if yours says "dyno-vox" I guess it could be from another country, it might be more obvious if you post a pic. I doubt it's because it was from a different US pressing plant.

I know that. But there were a few other people given that title, which is what one of the articles above is about (the link says john lennon actually gave preston that title). Either way, I don't know much about the beatles, and I don't really care -- just pointing out that Billy Preston contributed to rock enough to get credited / associated with the beatles (whether or not he was the 5th one). Thanks.

She has a fantastic (soul) voice. Even her paul anka produced recordings are good. I can't find the recording mentioned above on youtube, but it's really nice slightly funky modern, it's only available on epic stock copies.

That odia coates record (next to the bowie reel I think he was trying to take a pic of) is awesome. She has a lit of nice modern records, wonder why they're not in demand. Sorry to post off topic, will start a new one if you want.
