  1. looks totally different than the other records, almost like styrene: https://www.ebay.com/itm/170771597850?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_1532wt_840 also last night there was a promo of 118 which I was tempted to buy as I had it on stock (it was 9.99) but didn't. it didn't sell if you want to contact the seller to see if s/he still has it.
  2. oh yeah, one more clue which I just noticed is that it's probably not from the 60s because it has the recording copyright symbol (P) on it, which became widely used after the US government changed copyright laws in the 70s. So it probably wasn't pressed in the 60s? Maybe someone was trying to steal the record somehow? Its just totally bizarre.
  3. So at least once on ebay and once somewhere else I saw the Benny Sigler record that came out on Phil La of Soul on some other flowery looking (maybe even hand drawn) label called "Red Star". Last Sunday I was talking to Howard Ravitsky, who owned the Lash label and who produced the Benny Sigler record and Alfreda Brockington record for Phil La of Soul. I mentioned that the benny record came out first on some other label and he said that was not possible as he produced it directly from Phil La of Soul. Looking at the scan of the red star label: you can see that Ravitsky's name isn't on it anywhere. Some random producer is listed and even though Ravitsky was one of the writers, he's not listed. I sent him an image of the label via email and this was his response: "I'm just about 100 percent that record is a bootleg." Does anyone have any idea what the deal is with this pressing? it's also not mentioned at all in the manship 5th edition guide which includes bootleg information. I don't think it's a one-off because I think I've seen it at least twice (unless it was the same copy changing hands). Are the recordings identical to the Phil La of Soul release (the song titles are)? Was this pressed for the northern scene (in which case, it would be more common and not sell for a lot and be in Manship's book). Was this some sort of bootleg contemporaneous with the original release? I can't figure out who would bootleg this and what audience it would be for, except for the northern scene, as this record isn't really "known" on any other scene and is even obscure for a northern record. But it doesn't appear to be a northern bootleg. Totally weird, I would appreciate any info. Thanks.
  4. that joneses clip is so dope. two of my favorite clips are the blue magic sideshow where they're doing the robot and other sideshow choreography and the dynamic superiors shoe shoe shine (SO over the top). I would like to get a high quality version of the dynamic superiors if anyone here has it and is generous.
  5. I have like 30 garbage bags full of reversed bags unlimited mailers if anyone is in town and wants to pick one up from me.
  6. my life is much more pathetic than portrayed in that comic
  7. there is a typo above, it says "richard calton" instead of "richard caiton" (I was searching for "caiton" and was confused when I didn't find it).
  8. Thanks for the explanation. It also doesn't make sense that there would be "label blanks" in this case as there's no label art or anything like that. It still could (potentially) be a counterfeit for the current market (but that also might have absolutely nothing to do with the label design so I guess is a red herring). Weird that a pressing plant would just choose to make up their own style like that though.
  9. I've only seen the beveled edge of the ed nelson, the copies that came from that Japan stock. I can't imagine it was booted, the stock was sitting there for nothing in japan because nobody wanted it.
  10. I haven't listened yet. I did download it, will listen in the car driving later. I haven't heard that first track in forever, I recognized it as I'm pretty sure I had the LP it was on (and I haven't listened to LPs in a very long time), don't think I have it on 45.
  11. I would never post my wants list any more. I am even careful what dealers I send it to. When I first joined here I posted a long want list in wants and some dude verbatim stole it and posted on his myspace (he's still here...). I probably would show it to a good friend though, especially if he wasn't as deep into the specific genre / records as I was.
  12. Thanks for the explanation. I guess I also never really understood how much of the label is controlled by the label owner vs. pressing plant. I have seen label blanks (for example, my friend has a bunch of mod-art label blanks), so I guess the artist / title / writer / publishing, etc. was put on the label by the pressing plant? Wouldn't they already have blanks that had SIMS on them or did the factory make up the entire label themselves? Also, given that it was a hit, it has the potential to be a counterfeit for the market (although if they really wanted to counterfeit the record they probably would have tried to keep the font the same).
  13. I was going to ask you to post a track list but I see now that you already did and it's hidden under the player by the white-on-white.
  14. I usually get offered two different services that come with tracking, I forget the specific names of the services but I'm sure someone here would know. Far more important than tracking is packing the record well in a stiff US style mailer with filler pads so the package is rigid. I don't know how those envelope things even make it between UK addresses without getting cracked records. Even the filler pads that people use in those things are super thin and not rigid at all.
  15. is this a real label design or some sort of bootleg or reissue? https://www.ebay.com/itm/WALLACE-BROTHERS-Love-Me-Like-Love-You-SOUL-45-/290665634004?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item43ad0598d4#ht_2776wt_1070
  16. not actually a sale though ... an attempted sale
  17. was he someone you saw regularly? if so did he do anything to make it right and partially compensate you at least? it sounds like they weren't accidental buys where he didn't know the value; it sounds like he was taking advantage of you not knowing the current prices. Obviously if it was a random dealer or whatever it would be one thing, but it was your friend.
  18. I agree with this -- it's at least true with me. When a seller has free shipping I'll bid higher and when a seller has high shipping I get annoyed and think the seller is trying to rip me off and will bid lower.
  19. Tippie and the clovers isn't a hard record, there are a few copies on musicstack for instance
  20. ok, hopefully some people who know 50s will come out and post. You're in monterey? I love that Teddy Morrow 45 which I think is from there. it's so good. Also have the T&E corp which I like a lot (but not as much as the Teddy Morrow).
  21. I don't know if people know this, but ebay was messed up for a couple hours today and you couldn't log in (if you weren't already logged in). Almost all snipes failed during this period. So a lot of stuff went really cheap to the early bidders. I don't know if the alex brown was in the no-snipe period or not (actually I could probably look at the bid history ...) but it might have gone for much more.
  22. If you could predict what would go up and what would go down, you could make a lot of money. I mentioned this in another thread, but every time someone posts a Soul Bowl or similar list, and are amazed at something like timeless legend for 8 pounds there are a zillion records that aren't worth as much today for what they sold for on that list 30 years ago. How could you have predicted what would go up at the time? I also don't hear complaining from the people whose records have gone way up in price (except about that flairs for some reason ).
  23. also, shipping overall has gone up. I mailed one 45 to the UK two days ago and it cost $7.
  24. I just had this confirmed through experience a couple days ago. If you ship a 45 mailer "priority" it's like $36 and "express" it's like $37. But Priority has flate rate envelopes so you can put it in the envelope and get it for $17. But priority does NOT come with a tracking number. You can actually track with the customs number they give you. But like someone else says, I don't think it's a guaranteed tracking that goes beyond the border. Express comes with a true tracking number different than the customs number.
  25. if all you people have such insane cars I guess I now understand why the prices of northern records are insane
