Yeah, I would have said "Andy" but I wasn't sure if anyone else in the thread was an "Andy", I don't usually refer to him as "Dyson". Sorry. In the US we have the Dyson products too. There is a hand drier that is really weird that I used once somewhere and since about a year ago they've been advertising some sort of fan that doesn't create choppy air or something. They're all at ridiculous prices (e.g. you can buy a regular fan for $15 or you can buy his fan for $500) and geared toward people who like "design". We also have to see his commercials where he comes and talks with a british accent about how great he is. A similar character to Steve Jobs. There was a saturday night live skit making fun of the commercials once, it was for a dyson toilet.

I can scan the 45 if you want to see it if I get a chance. Reading that soulfuldetroit thread made me make a connection that is hopefully wrong - "The Count" isn't the philly record dealer "the count" is he?
-
not a typo, I played it on solid hit. the solid hit versions of the tracks are slightly different than the Mah's recordings, supposedly earlier.
-
This does seem sort of repetitive. Someone I was talking to like a year ago was working on some sort of video shoot at Kels house, he told me all this ridiculous stuff that he had but the only thing I remember is that he has a shark tank in his living room.

Article: The Dramatics - (Artist Of The Week)
boba replied to 45cellar's topic in Front Page News & Articles
Hi Heikki, thanks for posting! I have a few questions about the dramatics: 1. your website mentions Chess recordings. Is there some specific reason (for example, licensing problems) that they haven't been released on CD? It would be awesome to hear. Do you have some idea as to how many recordings were done at chess? Have you heard them? 2. I think the splinter dramatics (mainstream group) may have been the same group as the Theatrics on VR. Elbert Wilkins wrote the a-side of the Theatrics 45. Do you have any way to confirm this or get more info on the group? Also, here is the lineup I have of the Dramatics on Mainstream: Elbert Wilkins, Isaac Reed, William "Weegee" Howard (d. 2/22/00), Dupree Sims. Wilkins and Howard were both formerly of The Dramatics on Volt. Your discography only lists 2 members but says there were 3 other members. I'm not sure of the source of the lineup I'm giving you but it seems pretty specific. Maybe you should update your discography of the Mainstream group with these names? I have one more question but it is sort of messed up and I don't want to ask it publicly. What is the best way to contact you? Thanks a lot -
John Anderson's Soul Junction Does It Again, Hopkins Bros
boba replied to Dave Thorley's topic in All About the SOUL
why can't the artists be well paid for their records and have a reissue. I don't see how they're mutually exclusive. Also, just paying an artist well for their records and not offering them a reissue deal won't guarantee no reissue. Someone else will probably be even more likely to source them after they know the artist has been found to try to do a reissue. The only way you would prevent a reissue would be to negotiate some sort of rights contractually with the artist after buying their 45. That seems sort of shady (unless you actually plan to reissue it). -
I didn't think it was a steal. Just thought it was a little cheaper than the going rate.
-
This thread is weird because I agree with almost everything everyone said in it. I specifically agree with Dyson's description of collecting (e.g. the fun for me is buying weirdo records that are unknown but good, not known rarities) and I think that you should not let people cherry pick the top items specifically because the market is different than it was 10 years ago... Higher end stuff keeps going up, mid and lower end stuff is much harder to sell. So what dazdakin said was probably true in '88, the market is different now.
-
I am totally obsessed with buying and collecting and playing records too. It's weird for me to hear how people have other priorities in their lives like family and friends, I'm like "what are you talking about?" Then I go home and look at ebay for like 8 hours so I'm still posting on soul source at 9am and haven't slept.
-
Another option you might want to consider is having a dealer sell them for you on consignment. The downsides are that the dealer would take a cut and probably sell them for less than you would want them to sell them, and you would end up with the "cherry picked" issue you mentioned in your first post. But at least you would be getting some income and wouldn't have to deal with them.
-
It's fine if you don't want to sell them all in one shot, there's just no way anyone would give you more than 33% (or probably 25%). It's your prerogative to do anything you want with them, it just helps to be realistic in regard to your long term goals. I'm on another message board that has a lot of store owners so I hear their perspective a lot. Good luck with your sales, I hope you get a good rate.
-
no record store or dealer would pay 50% on "full value" (which if it means book, is even higher than "sale value"), they would lose money. it's not like the dealer is all of a sudden going to move all the stock and double their profits. The highest I've ever heard is like 33% and usually it's lower. Also, no offense intended, but I think your valuations are on the high end, based on your sales lists. I think you might end up frustrated and disappointed (or stuck with a bunch of pieces of plastic for the rest of your life) if you don't lower your expectations. And I know it's even harder because you have a personal attachment to the records.
-
i think it might have been a ron murphy thing? those detroit stars records are 80s releases of previously unreleased material i think.

this is andrew hamilton's allmusic writeup. on marian love --------------- The musical career of Kansas City, KS, native Marian Love started out as promising but ended so quickly that most have forgotten the exuberant tones of this multi-octave, jazzy songstress. Love is the second youngest of six siblings. She made a name for herself around town singing with her sisters Geraldine, Laverna, and Dora as the Love Sisters. Marian Love was the only sister to pursue singing professionally; the other three all became schoolteachers. She graduated from Wyandorne High in 1963 and enrolled at Kansas Junior College, majoring in education and minoring in music and voice. Unlike her siblings, Love had a burning desire to become a professional singer. In 1966, she was billed as the Jazz Discovery of the Year. After wowing an audience at a concert in Kansas where she sang on the same bill as Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder, and a second concert where she shared the bill with Lou Rawls and Stan Kenton (giving a stunning performance in front of 7,000 patrons), her parents finally gave their blessings to her singing career. Her popularity soared, and an appearance on a local television show brought her to the attention of three area businessmen who agreed to become her personal management team. Love was whisked out to Hollywood, CA, to record for Capitol Records; the trip was her first journey outside the Kansas City area. She cut an album that received good reviews but died. A single release, "Try a Little Loneliness," backed with "Can't Forget About You," remains a treasured item among some record collectors. With two and a half years of college behind her, Love soon tired of the unpredictability of the record business and joined her sisters as educators.

Help Identifying Unknown Female Artist & Song
boba replied to Amsterdam Russ's topic in Look At Your Box
I don't understand, do you know already and are posting it as a test of the board or are you genuinely trying to figure out into on the acetate? I'm not sure if the singer is white or Black. It sounds like the title of the song might be "split personality". -
Monster Ballads Hiding On B-Sides Of Northern Classics
boba replied to Weingarden's topic in Look At Your Box
Bumping this thread to post the carstairs which I just posted in the carstairs thread also: another one is the hytones on abet "I've got my baby". but i can't find a clip on youtube. -
-
there was a huge spike in price when it became known, now I'm pretty sure I've seen it sell or even BIN not sell on ebay for less than $100
-
I play the other side "I'm still the one" on my radio show, nice midtempo.
-
I have to ruin every thread about the carstairs by saying that the ballad side is KILLER. So good.

I don't know about anything else, but soul bowl did legally reissue all those Harthon titles in the 70s (with the plain label instead of the regular design).
