I've heard that the Eleventh Commandment on Chess were from Boston. The Fred Martin Revue track originally came out on ru-jac, I'm pretty sure the group is from baltimore. What are the four name changes of the Jive Five, or at least the 3 that come after that one? After shadow they became Ebony, ivory, and Jade. That leaves two name changes... what are they?

the story with the nella dodds is more complicated than just being a cover. it was a supremes LP cut that was not released as a single. The nella dodds record was a cover of a Supremes album cut. As soon as it started to be a hit Berry Gordy released the supremes version as a single and crushed nella's version. But because of this, her version was sort of responsible for making it a hit for the supremes.

Betty Baker is not a boot, she was the lead singer of the heartstoppers. All Platinum was super ghetto. If you get the Val Martin (who is donnie elbert) single on All Platinum as a stock copy (most are single sided promos), the a-side is clearly Donnie Elbert and the b-side is clearly some other singer.

I'm pretty sure the kayham group is different with no connection. The kayham record is from LA early sixties (actually supposedly 1960), this record is pittsburgh late 60s. One of the kayham group members was later in the incredibles on audio arts.

The west coast (e.g. mirwood) were copying motown hard. This has to be the most soundalike for me. Except for the horn intro, this sounds like any supremes record. Felice Taylor's voice even has a similar high / rasping quality as Diana Ross' voice:

The group was LASO, one of the singles was LASO Square. If it's that Happy Smoke track above, that actually came out as the group's second 45, even it was played off an LP.

I don't know about the northern scene or the album, but I have two LASO 45s, I think on MCA. It was a Joe Bataan project, he sings lead on at least some of the sides.

not that relevant in this thread, but since you have a writeup of him... Leo Graham produced the Love Column record on Duo. I asked him if he remembered the group and who they were and he didn't remember the record at all. I made him a CD and sent it to him and he never got back to me. I know he's done much more important things like his work with Tyrone, which overshadows his smaller productions, but I'm trying to document the smaller stuff. If you ever talk to him again, please ask him about that record, maybe talking to him the first time or sending him a CD stirred up some memories. I still have to email you my dramatics question btw. When was the boot done, where was it distributed to, and for what market? If it was a northern soul boot, they could have done the contemplations instead? Also, it looks like they put in a lot of effort to make it seem real.

I'm pretty sure mine actually has a label design. I will dig out all my francettes 45 later and just post them.

I actually was playing that the other day. I found another good deep soul 45 of his that I was playing. I don't usually like deep soul but these are nice.

haha, yeah, most of his Dakar records sound like "change my mind" and most of his later records sound like "in the mood".

I think 3 members of the MGM group were in the onyx group and that the MGM group was a reformed version of the group. Richie Pitts wasn't a member of the onyx group, but he was a member of the Newtones on Baton, and later the Strangers on WB. I assume the MGM group was a reformed version of the Velours. However, I have no idea what actually happened, maybe there was a Velours group that continuously existed and Pitts joined when on MGM. It doesn't matter that much (to me at least).

my francettes on besche label looks totally different. I have almost all their 45s (as I noted before...).
