  1. Thanks a lot, will try this next time I need to clean an acetate (although I often avoid them because they are so fragile).
  2. yes, part of the reason I think the Dontells is that the best female version by far, in my opinion, is Baby Washington. Some of the versions make it jazzier, etc. but I would rather hear a soulful version with Washington's vocals. The Dontells is a totally different take on the song, turning into a male falsetto harmony track, which is very soulful in another way.
  3. you should be able to piece together the discography from that CD. the rarest title on the label is definitely the eddie fisher 45.
  4. how do you apply the soapy water? with a piece of cloth or some other way?
  5. both of these things are true, but it's the type of and extent of mistakes that is problematic (for example, assuming that anyone with the same name is the same person, even though it should be obvious to most collectors many of the cases where that isn't true). I just wrote a long response with some examples but I don't want to get into it here because a lot of the people that feed him info (who actually are collectors and who do have accurate information) are on here and I don't want to get into a debate over this.
  6. After a million people got stock from the label owners, the label owners are now selling it themselves on ebay. I think they have been listing that motivation iv 45 (great sweet soul) more than the pierce brothers. Just find an instance of the motivation iv and ask the seller a question.
  7. does it say what the ingredients are in the lens cleaning solution? Also, it seems expensive if you're cleaning a lot of 45s. Just got the anti-static spray someone recommended in the mail. Might try on one of those records I was testing the glue thing on (but first will test on a cheaper record to make sure it doesn't ruin it). I will see if it makes it sound better. Thanks.
  8. Thanks for the info everyone I appreciate it. I will wait for one to come through ebay I guess (although I know that doesn't happen often because I know I haven't seen the record a lot). Thanks again.
  9. I thought I did reply (with the things you are saying) and i saw the reply, but the next day I couldn't find my post, like it had been deleted or something.
  10. i think it was real on ebay. what is a fair price then? Thanks. Steve, I'm really sorry if I'm forgetting something obvious, but I'm in Chicago, did I see you on Friday?
  11. I said it in the other thread -- best version is the Dontells. And it's a totally different take on it that fits a male group better.
  12. I've actually found more and more sellers polishing their records. it's terrible, do they think buyers can't tell? Some polish it down to a perfect shine with no visible scratches and you can't even hear the music because there's so much noise. I got burned recently by a couple of arizona sellers and even a younger (my age) california seller.
  13. I haven't listened to a lot of his catalog, but I also would recommend strawberry letter 23, one of their biggest hits and should satisfy nephews who might not know their uncle's obscure songs. It's also less synth funk.
  14. Hi. I am looking for a copy of jimmy mack on hamster. It just ended on ebay at $85. I'm looking to pay about $100 for a clean copy. Please PM me. Thanks.
  15. I use billy, I have a bunch of them and they're pretty much perfect. Can take a picture of one of them if you want. They are flimsy, perfectly fine for holding 45s (you need to make sure they're bracketed to the wall) but they won't survive a move or two. But that's true of all ikea furniture. The one negative I have is that they discontinued the color from when I first started buying the shelf so one or two shelves are different colors now.
  16. I think there was a topic on this very recently but I searched and couldn't find it. There are a lot of different versions listed in that topic though.
  17. I think it was not uncommon for people to get an acetate (or "dub") cut of a record they wanted to listen to, and local record stores would often do that (I think beverly records in chicago would do that). I wouldn't even try to clean the acetate if it's at all flaking or unstable. If it seems stable you could run water in the sink and try to just rinse the record off, maybe putting a little bit of soap and working the grooves with your fingers. I have also heard of people using a sponge with some water / soap on the grooves and then running it under the sink water to rinse off the soapy water. I would not use anything else besides water / dish soap on the record and I would be extremely careful and slow and stop if it seems like you're affecting the coating.
  18. For some reason I've only seen yellow copies of walk away and blue copies of happy. Probably the different colored stock is all in the UK? I have a few copies of the walk away and they all play okay for me.
  19. yeah, I think a VPI-type machine is more needed for LPs which are much harder to manually clean. I was just suggesting that if you're doing almost all the same things the machine does, to get one. If you're only buying cheap records, I agree it's not worth it, but if you buy more expensive ones (which cost more than the machine) it's probably worth the investment.
  20. true, I should have been more specific, I just meant "water" (versus water mixed with something else, which is what the "regular" is) but distilled is much clearer. thanks.
  21. you might be thinking of the red rocket label, which was a pittsburgh bootleg label but had one release that only came out on the label (the stylers).
  22. it's awesome how you're the person liking a post saying I don't contribute to the site
  23. Straight 90% or higher ispropyl alcohol plus a lint-free cloth will pretty quickly remove paint by the way. Also, soap and water remove certain things that rubbing alcohol doesn't, so if you have a really dirty record do both. Make sure to rinse or scrub with regular water afterwards though because soap will leave gunk in the grooves if not washed off.
  24. I thought you were skipping over my posts? Too bad I didn't say anything negative about manship's site there because then you would have responded.
